You definitely have options. You could always replace the turbo you have with a TD04HL. It’ll be a little bigger and be close enough so you wouldn’t really need a tune. However you could always do the famous, VF39,43,48 STI turbo swap. You can make great power with supporting mods. But it should be able to run on your stock engine fine with a proper tune. So you can do a little more power or you can do decent power with tune. Getting one isn’t terrible. Classifieds on here will have them, Craigslist from time to time, ebay will have used ones, car-part.com, heck even the dealerships, you’ll pay a pretty penny though. |

I've recently been given the go-ahead by the Missus to upgrade my MY08 Forester XT's turbo and with the multitude of threads i come across I find myself overwhelmed. I was looking for suggestions on what would be the best options to preserve daily drivability whilst giving me the power I lust for. I'd prefer to have more power with similar profile with bigger numbers ( I plan to create a sleeper to compliment my muscle car.) If anyone would be able to recommend a few ideas on a turbo that would not be too crazy, I'd appreciate a place to start.
Thanks in advance. |

Seems like I’m the only active guy on this thread lol. I’d start with a STI turbo, VF39, VF43, or even a VF48. With supporting mods you can put down some surprising numbers. Full exhaust, STI injectors or after market injectors, intercooler, headers, uppipe, good set of spark plugs, maybe a fuel pump. That’ll get you started. You can research other swaps people did and get a feel for the numbers. You can also build up the sti turbo while it’s out of the car and that’ll help too. You have quite a few options but I think what I mentioned would be a great starting point. |

That’d give you 300-400whp depending on how much you want to turn it up and fuel used. |

Hey all,
Total noob to turbos here. I've been reading the turbo faq thread, but obviously have tons to learn. I was hoping to get some direction from you folks with suggestions on my best options. Car: 2016 sti mods: FMIC, intake, killer b headers, perrin exhaust, grimmspeed boost control, 320 fuel pump, perrin fuel pressure regulator, 1000cc injectors, AOS. Don't think I'm missing anything else major. I'd like to get more overall power, but would primarily like more power at the front end and faster spool. Not sure if it's possible to get both in one turbo. I'm not super concerned with power at the top end, but obviously would like more if possible, but my focus is more at lower gears. I'm curious to see what you all think would be my best option here. Thanks! |

Hmmm looks like you have all the ingredients. I would look into a twin scroll turbo. You get constant boost. Starting from low rpms to high. Only downside is you’ll probably have to switch your header, uppipe, and down pipe to make it work. Could be worth it though. Kinugawa offers a 20g twin scroll that is a beefed up vf37 I believe. Overall ratings for it seem rather nice. Other than that you’ll be looking for a turbo with a lot of spool and quick. Ball bearing would be a good idea to consider as well. There are tons of turbo options for ball bearing turbos that can make any turbo spool fast for more acceleration. I can do some digging on that kinugawa one. They have a lot of twin scroll options. |

At this point I think I'd rather do a regular stock placement turbo upgrade since I can keep my headers, killer b does a trade in program so that I can trade in my killer b uppipe for an uppipe for the ewg, and my cost will be much lower overall |

Look into atp turbos for the ability to retain your up pipe, and still be able to go ewg. I have a gt3076r. The wastegate is mounted right off of the hot side. Very easy to remove and service.
Although ball bearing, it does push power to the right for better mid to top end at the cost of some low end torque. Just the price you pay for a bigger turbo, but something you’ll get used to quickly. |

I have VF37 in my 04 Forester STI (2.5L) and the spool is awesome. Starts to build boost at around 1600rpm and full boost is achieved at ca 2400rpm.
At 6000rpm it holds 1 bar (14psi) very well. The response is immediate. The acceleration is very linear and very N/A-like. |

Only just a few are listed here on NASIOC.
You can find the complete list in my page. Search for “Advanced Sports Engineering Lab”. I have or have had almost all Subaru VF turbos and I know them perfectly. Write me if you need some more info. Hugs friends! |

I read through the whole thread and didn't see anything listed on them, but is anybody here legitimately familiar with Tomei ARMS turbos? I see a lot of comments on other threads about how somebodies friend said his cousins Tomei setup was junk, but I need first hand knowledge. I have the MX8265 on my STI and I've been happy thus far, but I need to know if it's worth keeping, or ditching for a FP setup.

My Babble:
My old Turbo was an Twisted Motion TD05-20G and it would make Wastegate pressure (19psi) by 3,500 but felt like it wouldn't pull very hard after 5K but it never dropped boost, the car was on an stock block with fuel upgrades and an Oversized TMIC and an Etune by iaTuning with lot's more potential from this thing. Guessing the power output at 19psi with this turbo felt about 315whp 330wtq. I paid $300 for the thing as my old one was making an cat noise so I can't complain for an USA company. It lasted me 2 years before I upgraded and it didn't have much shaft play when I gave it away. Great Bang for your Buck over Stock in my opinion. |

VF11 second gen legacy
I have a 96 legacy with a 2.5 ecu for the extra horsepower and because the 91ecu is not compatible with my model of car, a '94 block, turbo heads, a VF11 turbo that pushes close to 11 psi, it has outback struts and wrx wheels, and surprisingly it runs like a dime with 92 octane. It's beautiful the way you can frankenstein turbos onto just about any car... Too bad I totaled it a few days ago. Best car I ever owned I had it for 2 years and put a lot of time money and effort into it. You live and you learn!

I know it's a twin scroll, ball bearing turbo. Titanium wheel? Power potential? Source? Any other details are appreciated |

I believe I found a VF58 (ST14411ZR010) for the low price of $3,380 plus shipping.. It looks like the turbo was also used on the S206 & S207.
