News VinFast VF8 Electric 5 Seat SUV

Vietnamese Tesla Rival Sets Sail for the U.S. Market
VinFast is shipping 999 of its electric vehicles to California as the Vietnamese company looks for a place in the U.S. market

Brace yourself, America; VinFast is on the way.

The Vietnam-based electric vehicle maker is taking the slow boat to California as it sends its first batch of 999 VF 8s, the company's 5-seater electric SUV, to America aboard the Silver Queen, a Panamanian charter ship.

The company, which held a ceremony to mark the occasion on Nov. 25., said the first VinFast customers in the US can expect their cars by the end of December.

“The export of the first 999 VF 8s is a significant event for VinFast and Vingroup and a proud historical milestone for the Vietnamese automotive industry," Nguyen Viet Quang, vice chairman and CEO of Vingroup, said in a statement. "It affirms that Vietnam has successfully produced high-quality standards electric vehicles that are ready to compete in the international market."

Established in 2017, VinFast is part of the VinGroup conglomerate, which was founded by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's first billionaire.

"The VinGroup has a lot of resources and they are investing those resources to enter the American and European markets," said Tung Bui, information technology management professor with the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Shidler College of Business.

Bui said it was too early to tell how VinFast will fare in the U.S., "but they have followed the marketing strategy of Hyundai when it entered the US market in 1986:"

"There is currently a void for affordable luxury EVs and VinFast is trying to fill this void with an entry point of $45,000," he said. "They also have an aggressive second-to-none warranty service: 10 years or 200,000 whatever comes first. This is a strong signal of quality."

The main reason they can advertise a cheaper car is that you basically lease the batteries from them... You pay for the car, then lease the battery. I haven't seen if that includes free battery replacements, but it was something like 150/month for an unlimited mileage lease, on top of your finance costs for the car... Sounded like they were going to offer to sell the battery starting in 2024...

so. meh.

over 10 years (warranty period) that's ~18,000 in battery lease payments (Assuming it doesn't go up/you can lock in that rate), so $63k starting MSRP; yeah I dunno bout that

Vietnam's VinFast files for US IPO as it targets global market
https://www.yahoo.com/news/vietnams-...080424133.html
Quote:
Vietnam's homegrown carmaker VinFast, which plans to sell the first ever Vietnamese car in the United States, said Wednesday it has filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the country.

Vinfast, which is part of conglomerate Vingroup, owned by Vietnam's richest man Pham Nhat Vuong, will deliver its first electric SUVs to Americans later this month.

On Wednesday, the company said it "intends to list its ordinary shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol 'VFS'".

No decision has been made on the number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering, it added.

The pivot to the United States is a bold move by chairman Vuong, who started out selling dried noodles in the former Soviet Union before amassing his $5 billion fortune in a range of sectors including real estate, tourism and education.

VinFast already has electric vehicles (EVs) on the streets of Hanoi, but is using an unusual battery leasing model to hook customers in the crowded and difficult US market, which is dominated by Elon Musk's Tesla.

The upfront payment for the VF8 and VF9 -- the two models sold in the US -- will be $42,000 and $57,500 respectively. Tesla's SUVs start at around $65,000.

In July, VinFast opened six showrooms in California, including a flagship store at one of the trendiest malls in upmarket Santa Monica.

It said it planned for 30 in total by the end of the year, while it has also broken ground on a $2 billion electric vehicle and battery plant in North Carolina that it says will produce 150,000 cars a year when fully up and running.

Vinfast has also opened showrooms in Europe -- one in Cologne, Germany, and another in Paris -- and is targeting several other European cities.

not a good 1st impression....
Vinfast's first EVs to arrive in US will have only 180 miles of range
Vietnamese car company Vinfast is facing criticism from American car buyers after it revealed the model it is shipping out is quite different than initially advertised.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/vinfasts-...233918730.html
Quote:
The EV company previously announced that it is shipping out two versions of its five-seater SUV called the VF 8.

Both versions – the Eco and Plus – come with an advanced driver assistance system that features highway assist, lane changing assist and smart parking assist.

The Eco variant will reportedly come with a maximum electric motor power of 260 kilowatts and battery life that can last for up to 420 kilometers (approximately 261 miles) at full charge, with a torque of 500 Newton-meters.

Meanwhile, the Plus version will have an increased maximum electric motor power of 300 kilowatts, a full-charge range of around 400 kilometers (approximately 249 miles) and a higher torque of 620 Newton meters.

The initial batch of 999 automobiles was shipped from Vietnam on Nov. 25 and is due to arrive in California before the end of December.

Reservation holders of the electric SUVs were surprised to receive an email from the company on Nov. 29, however, notifying them that VF 8s in the initial shipment will be a special “City Edition.” The previously unannounced variant has a total full-charge range of only 290 kilometers (180 miles).

Vinfast later confirmed to Dot.LA the vehicles the company shipped out in the first batch are all the City variants. According to the company, the standard edition is set to arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2023.

The email the reservation holders received did not explain why the company shipped out a different version than the initially promised Eco and Plus variants that come in the 260-292 mile range. Depending on the trim, the City version can be purchased at either $55,500 or $62,500, which are just about $3,000 less than the versions with significantly higher ranges.

Those who reserved will get an additional $3,000 off if they choose to purchase the City variant, which brings its total to $6,000 less than the originally advertised versions.

Vinfast’s $52,000 price for its City Edition appears to be significantly steeper compared to the more established EV brands in the market, most of which range below $50,000.

On Reddit, Vinfast’s apparent push for its City variant and the lack of transparency have enraged many potential buyers.

“My question is why did vinfast spring this on us?” a user asked. “Why just a 180-mile range estimate? Why no battery lease? I'm so not in a hurry to get this trim; I just hope all 999 VF8s on the way aren't THIS trim.”

“My concern is the high price and being forced to buy the battery,” another Redditor wrote. “No thanks. I'm good if they drop the price by a lot. The estimated range is fine for me as a daily commute vehicle. But NOT at that price.”
Not the way to establish a good name in the industry....

VinFast, Vietnamese Startup, Says Americans Can Get Its EVs This Year
VinFast VF6 and VF7 reservations will open in March for U.S. buyers, with deliveries promised starting around the end of the year.
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a4...-opening-soon/
-VinFast, a Vietnamese startup automaker, announced it will start taking orders for its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs starting in March.
-The subcompact VF6 is expected to have a WLTP range of up to 248 miles, which could translate to a 200-mile EPA rating.
-The compact VF7's WLTP range is estimated to top out at 280 miles, or as much as 224 EPA-rated miles.

Quote:
Following up on the reveal of the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs at the 2022 Los Angeles auto show, Vietnamese automaker VinFast said it will open the reservation process for these two models in March. Speaking at the 2022 CES show in Las Vegas, VinFast CEO Le Thi Thu Thuy said that deliveries are expected to begin at the end of the year and into early 2024.

VinFast also updated the specifications for each SUV with an estimated range. The 174-horsepower Eco version of the subcompact VF6 is expected to go 248 miles on the WLTP test cycle, while the 201-hp Plus trim is slightly lower at 237 miles. As a rough estimate, that converts to somewhere between 190 and 200 miles on the EPA test cycle, but the final numbers might be lower. The VF8, which VinFast says its first customers in California will start receiving this month, goes 293 miles on the same test but will initially have an EPA-rated estimated range of 179 miles. A VinFast representative claimed that the VF8's range is expected to increase following an upcoming over-the-air update, and the official rating will be revised after recertification.

The compact VF7 is targeted to go 280 miles on the WLTP test in 201-hp Eco trim, and the 348-hp, two-motor AWD Plus version will go 268 miles. That translates to somewhere between 170 and 224 miles of EPA-rated maximum range. The company did not mention the overall battery capacity for the VF6 or VF7.

How Much?
Pricing for both models will be announced sometime in the next month or so. The VF6 is estimated to start around $30,000, while the VF7’s estimated base price is under $40,000. Reserving the VF8 and VF9 requires a $200 deposit on the VinFast website, so customers should be able to claim a place in line for the same amount when the VF6 and VF7 reservation system opens.

Also speaking at VinFast's CES press conference, Gareth Dunsmore, Deputy CEO for sales and marketing, said that the first reservation holders for the VF6 and VF7 will have "additional rewards with meaningful benefit" with details to follow. The "VinFirst" program for the VF8 and VF9 included an NFT allowing special access to the Vingroup Metaverse, along with discounts of $3000 and $5000, respectively.

VinFast had initially promised U.S. deliveries of its larger VF8 before the end of 2022, and while a ship carrying the electric crossovers arrived in the United States in late December, those planned deliveries did not happen before the new year.

VinFast lowers VF 8 prices, increases range, which changes maybe nothing
$6,500 comes off the MSRP, range climbs to 207 miles on a charge
https://www.autoblog.com/2023/01/30/...creases-range/

Quote:
Nascent EV automaker VinFast is spending January trying to find its feet in the rapidly shifting U.S. market, some of the wobbles self-inflicted. After bringing a first batch of VF8 crossovers to the West Coast in December, reservation holders were informed every unit on the cargo ship was a previously unheard of "limited release" variant called the City Edition set aside "for VinFirst Pioneer customers only." In a letter to expectant shoppers, VinFast said City Edition came with a 179-mile range instead of the 260-mile or 277-mile range promised in April last year. Not only that, the automaker delayed its battery subscription program that was going to cost $169 per month for the VF 8 and give customers unlimited miles. New pricing for the VF8 was $56,700 for the City Edition Eco, the City Edition Plus starting at $63,700, and a base VF 8 Eco starting at $60,200 whenever it arrives. All those prices include the $1,200 destination fee. A California-only lease program starts at $519 a month.

Then Tesla lopped a bunch of money off the price of the Model 3 and Model Y, sending some competing EV companies back to their calculators, VinFast one of them. The retail site now proclaims "a special VF 8 City Edition promotional program for the U.S. market" that takes $6,500 off both prices. That makes the VF 8 City Edition Eco MSRP $50,200, the City Edition Plus MSRP $57,200. On top of that, the site says, "Customers will receive an additional direct discount of $3,000 off the MSRP." Assuming final prices of $47,200 and $54,200 before options, the City Editions would still be above, but much closer to, initial pricing announced last April of $41,200 for the VF 8 Eco and $49,200 for the VF 8 Plus.

Range has increased as well, but it's still wanting. VinFast said an OTA update this month would increase range, the new City Editions now touted as going an estimated 207 miles on a charge instead of 179 or 180. Yes, it's a good improvement. However, the number still lags far behind the 260-mile and 277-mile ranges for the VF 8 Eco and Plus, respectively, that VinFast mentioned in April last year when the crossover was less expensive.

The Tesla Model Y Dual Motor starts at $54,880 and goes 330 miles on a charge. That's a nifty $7,680 more than the VinFast VF 8 City Edition Eco, $680 more than the VF 8 City Edition Plus. The thing is, for now, until March this year, the Model Y is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. Getting the full amount would make the Tesla just $180 more than the base City Edition and a whole lot less than the premium City Edition Pro. Last year, VinFast said certain customers could receive the tax credit anyway, but it's not clear if that's still the case; our guess is the tax credit provision is where the new discount comes from, applied to all customers instead of a subset. We don't know how the new pricing is meant to sway Tesla shoppers, though. The VinFast Reddit boards were already full of reservation holders discussing how to get out of buying what feels like a bait-and-switch in the City Edition, and now they're peppered with commenters saying they swapped their VF 8 reservations for a Model Y.

EV makers, like Rome, aren't built in a day — even Tesla spent many years becoming *Tesla.* We're sure teams at VinFast's new consolidated North American HQ are braced for a few stormy years, all of which might be passable if the company would stop punching holes its own boat.

VinFast slashes lease prices for first U.S. buyers, deliveries starting March 1
Initial customers with deposits down will pay just $274 per month in California
https://www.autoblog.com/2023/02/27/...price-slashed/
Quote:
Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has cut the lease price for its first model shipped to the United States by more than 50% for its first customers in California, with delivery starting this week, according to the company and emails to customers reviewed by Reuters.

VinFast, a subsidiary of conglomerate Vingroup JSC, had said in January its first VF8 all-electric crossovers would be available to lease at a monthly payment of $599 for 24 months.

Its website showed as of Monday a monthly lease price of $399 for the vehicle for a 24-month lease.

VinFast told people who had already paid a refundable deposit on the car that the payment would be $274 per month in California, the first U.S. state to receive the vehicles, according to messages to those potential buyers reviewed by Reuters.

That amounts to a discount of between 33% and 54% from the initially advertised monthly lease price.

"This is our special offer to VinFast customers for the VF 8 City Edition models in order to stay competitive with other brands," VinFast said in a statement.

"We will officially deliver the VF 8 City Edition vehicles to customers on March 1," it said, without specifying the number of units in the 999 batch shipped to California late last year.

The move represents the latest sign of increased price competition by EV makers. Tesla, the global EV leader, cut prices globally by up to 20% in January, although it has increased prices on some models and in some markets by smaller margins since.

The Biden administration's EV credits, which took effect at the start of the year, have also changed the calculus for automakers and U.S. consumers.

Electric vehicles like those made by Tesla in North America qualify for a consumer tax credit of $7,500. Businesses, including the finance companies that underwrite car leases, can also claim a credit of up to $7,500 for EVs if the cars are sold by one of the companies certified by the IRS.

VinFast was not listed as one of the 39 "qualified manufacturers" on the IRS list as of Monday.

VinFast said earlier this month that US Bancorp would provide lease financing for the company's sales in the United States.

Vehicle subscription service Autonomy has a deal with VinFast to purchase 2,500 EVs, the companies said in November.

In a separate statement, VinFast's chairwoman Le Thi Thu Thuy said VinFast expected to deliver EVs in Canada, France, Germany and the Netherlands, following its deliveries in the U.S. market.

The VF 8 City Edition comes in both Eco and Plus trim with an EPA-rated range of 207 miles (333 km) and 191 miles (307 km) respectively, the company said.

The company has filed for an initial public offering in the United States and plans to build an EV assembly factory in North Carolina.
