Default Considering move to texas and curious about emissions

I have been contemplating moving to texas and I was curious how strict your emissions laws are. I am coming from california where any modification seems to be illegal these days.

So, what is the deal with cat removal?

Also, do you have decent access to 92 octane.

Thanks for the replies.

We got 93 octane! Also the police aren't nazis like California where they make you open your hood. You should be good

Most places here dont have 92 octane. Just about every station has 93. And what are these "cats" you speak of?

WOW, leaving california seems more and more appealing. Especially since I would need to make about $150k a year to afford a 900 sq/ft condo with no yard and no garage in socal.

muaahahaaa.... cats

You won't get put on the dyno cause you are too new... and also do any emissions/inspection places around here even have an AWD dyno? I would be VERY suprised if they did. They put my mr2 on there and it failed miserably.

I don't know of a station that doesn't have 93 octane.

If you meet some people and ask around, you could find a way to get by regardless. I have never had anyone visually inspect anything here.

It's also depending on where you move to. Most counties in Texas don't have the strict emissions and some like Harris(Houston), Galveston(Dickinson; Galvestion; Texas City, etc) do. And counties around the Dallas area as well. So choose your county carefully.... I don't even think they check the cats anymore, just so you can pass the sniff test...

Yeah, cost of living is way cheaper then Cali and so is our gas. Also if you live just outside of city limits most of the houses there come with a good sized piece of land, all for significantly less then buying an overpriced house in the bad parts of town in Cali.

This is the most appealing aspect of moving to texas. I am looking at san antonio and my wife and I could have a much larger place (than in cali) and she doesn't even have to work (although she better pull some cash in ).

in cali, it is easier to find 100 octane (at a few 76 stations) than 92 or 93.

-moktod

p.s.

how much is your gas?

Last weekend when I filled up it was about $2.07 - $2.09 which is about the average price in Texas for 93 octane. At least average considering the rise in gas the past 6-8 weeks.

Hell a while back it was about $1.60 or so for premium.

East Texas has higher octane gas then west Texas

Unless it it has changed..most of west Texas only has 91 octane.
In the panhandle part, you'll have a hard time finding greater then 90 octane, especially in all the small farm towns. Since your going to be in San Antonio, no need to worry about it though.

Other then that..not much on emissions testing except for in the mentioned counties.

Yeah, I have been hating CA lately (had a gun pulled on me by some thug while driving home and another fool jumped out of his car with a baseball bat and pounded a car next to me, two different occurances all in one day).

So...if anyone knows of a good technical recruiter, please let me know.

Most of us in Texas just kind of pretend there is nothing west of San antonio.

While Texas comes complete with a much lower cost of living than Cali, it also typically comes with lower salaries than what you might be used to (not that you can't find a job in some areas making heavy-duty bank).

That said, you still come out a good bit further ahead here if I am to believe all the folks I know out on the West Coast (Cali, Wash-St., etc...) and those on the East Coast (Boston, NY).

We also don't have state income tax (Cali does, right?.. I don't really recall... they tax everything out there as far as I know).

Ft. Bend is one of those counties that's pretty cool about emissions stuff if you're looking for that 'feature', but close to a big city (it's on the outskirts of Houston).

I have yet to see an AWD emissions dyno... they must exist, but I haven't had to find one yet, and haven't heard any tales of them.
We get the electronic sniffer via OBD-II or whatever it is.

If you want to live somewhere that roughly approximates what you might consider 'Cali-style' (a bit more liberal, better local music, better scenery, honies everywhere...), go to the Austin area. It's also roughly centrally located between all the larger cities. I don't live there (another reason to move there!), but I do enjoy visiting.

Good luck, welcome to Texas... you'll be issued a Spanish-to-English, and English-to-Spanish dictionary on the plane-ride over.

Yeah, we have state tax.

The dictionary will be useless. I am from SoCal (LA). I am already fluent

Texas if fairly decent, if you don't mind the hot weather.. but coming from SoCal, you're already used to it.

Yeah.. except the first time you do it.. then its expensive.. total cost to register my car here the first time was going to be nearly $300.. I said screw it and re registerted in WA for $30.. Texas really wants to bend you over if you have an out of state car.

Moktod,

In Texas you can also get a Concealed Handgun License. Don't know if that would make it more appealing or not...Welcome to Tejas..... hehe

just to add to the emissions banter, '96 and newer require no dyno testing _or_ sniffer either. just hook it up to the OBDII diagnostic connector and fly(you'll need a CEL eliminator if you run with no cats) if your in a non-complient county, if not, it's just $12.50 and a quick saftey inspection!

Moktod, if you're looking for a decent home in San Antonio, you can find a 3/2/2(really nice one probably about 1600 sq. ft.) for about $120K. There's cheaper, there's more expensive, but that'll net you a really nice house in a decent neighborhood.

Gas is cheaper than Cali. I paid $2.03/gallon at Shell, 93 octane. But average price is around $2.08-2.10 for the good stuff.

The folks here are super friendly(compared to southern Florida), but some of 'em drive like maniacs. I moved from West Palm Beach last year, and I have only one regret, and that is missing my family.

As far as a Laker fan in S.A., they can deal with it Too bad my Spurs are out 'cuz of them .....

you're not kidding.

what is the job market like in San Antonio?
how is the tech industry going?
A lot of the SCIC members are techies, just curious if TXIC is the same.

There are quite a few techie TXIC members.. My wife and I have been considering moving from Dallas to somewhere between Austin and SA because Her job has an office down there, and there seems to be more tech growth there than there is in Dallas.. For example, I was offered a job in Dallas as a basic PC tech... got a call 2 days later cancelling the offer because they just layed off 100 people.. Thats been pretty on par for my luck with tech jobs around Dallas.
