I have an 05 with 35k miles on it. I have used nothing but water since day 1 and it still looks brand new. That looks like it was either rubbed/abraded off with something or burned away with one of the cleaning products.

So what do you guys recommend when I'll get the new wheel? Don't drive the car? Lotion my hands? And I'm definitely tossing all the leather cleaning products.

Same thing has happened to my '03 WRX. Only 20,000 miles too. I'll have to stop by the dealer and see if they'll replace mine since I'm still under warranty too.

Change your diet... less cold cuts

Seriously, I'm not sure though... perhaps gloves of some sort, wipe your wheel after use, leather protection, wash your hands before a trip, mahogany steering wheel (I'm running out of ideas)...

BMW makes some really nice driving gloves.

Weird thing is though, I've never had this happen to any other vehicle I owned. How does the Subaru material differ? Anyone else with this problem observing the same?

I'm sure the leather in a bmw steering wheel is of much higher quality than the subaru. I dont know muc about leather, but I'd imagine the dye used is also of lesser quality than subaru.

Same problem with my 02 wrx...

I'm trying to use "mink oil" and it seems to help some.
I didn't have any luck with any "leather conditioning" products.

Got the new wheel installed today in the morning The wheel feels thicker and nicer, I didn't even remember how the top portion of a non-damaged wheel looked like and felt, there's actually a texture to that part. I'm scared to be touching it with my acidic hands. I arrived a couple minutes after 8.00, I was on the way to school at 8.33.

I was just a bit nervous for the airbags since I know they didn't disconnect the battery, I'm sure of that, but who am I to tell them how to do their job, we all know how dealerships like being told what to do.

I also asked the service rep if I could get my old wheel back as I said I want to hang it on the wall right next to my bent wheel from last winter (technically I wanted to sell it for people wanting to wrap it in alcantara) but he said all warrantied parts are sent back to Saab USA, and he'll give me a call if something will change, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Overall I'm very happy with the Saab Exchange in Lake Bluff, top notch service and great guys to deal with.
