Angry 97 2.5 GT Bucking under 2k RPM... help!

Ok, I used Gary's fix to fix the midrange light throttle hesistation, worked like a
charm, thanks Gary! Now for the other problem that has just crept up. I have a rock solid, steady idle, but at 1/2+ throttle, under 2k rpm's, my car bucks like a bronco! Anyone have any experience with this? I reset my ECU hoping it would help, but no luck. Any suggestions fellas?

Question

I don't have an answer to your question, but I have the same sort of problem below about 3000 rpm and was hoping Gary's fix would do it. My trouble is that my mechanic skills aren't the greatest and I don't want to get this thing taken apart any more than I'm sure I can put back together correctly. Did you have to remove the intake manifold to install Gary's fix? Did you actually remove the knock sensor from the block as per Gary's instructions, or did you leave the knock sensor in and just splice into the wire? Is there a trick to this? I'm having trouble getting at the wire and connector. The Haynes book says that in order to get to the knock sensor you have to drain the coolant, remove alternator & a/c compressor, remove intake manifold, etc., etc. Since Gary's page says "installs in minutes" I would think there's got to be a better way, but I can't figure out how. Kruf or anybody else who's done Gary's mod, I would appreciate any hints or tips.

Thanks!

What is "Gary's fix"? I'm not familiar with this. Of course, I'm not sure I have anything to fix!

Patrick- Gary's "fix" is to quiet the signal from the knock sensor, b/c Subaru's TSB identified certain 97-98 ECUs that were overreacting to the signal from the knock sensor and drastically retarding the timing. The result is a low-mid range hesitation or flat spot, around 2K rpm.

His suggestions are to a) put a couple rubber donuts or other material betw. the knock sensor and the block to dampen it or b) splice in a home-made resistor, which he sells. I've used b) w/ no problems whatsoever, before that I had to re-set the ECU every week.

OK, I have heard of that before. I just bought my '97 this past weekend, haven't noticed any problems with excessive hesitation yet. I'll have to pay attention to see if I notice any problems.

The new fix is different. all it involves is disconnection the wire to the knock sensor and putting some wires in line w/ vampire taps.

Here is Gary's site:
http://home.earthlink.net/~hobiegary/hesitation.htm

And some good info from Brian's: http://members.nbci.com/_XMCM/northu.../paperclip.htm

Brian's site has the install directions from Gary.

Peaty

PS I have the kit but never installed it because I don't have the hesitation problem myself.

Those of you who installed Gary's fix (the one with the vampire taps), were you able to do it without removing the intake manifold?

I almost installed it on my car, I had the plug apart from the knock sensor and everything. It's a little tricky to get your hands in there but it's very simple to do. You won't have to remove anything. Just run the wires and tap the taps.

Cool

Hey-
I thought for a while that I had that hesitation problem and I was about to get garys fix, until my check engine light came on. Found out my #3 plug was faulty. I was kinda pissed cause I had dismissed my plugs as the problem seeing as I had just changed them. Anyway, I upgraded to Platinum +4's, and I get noticeably smoother acceleration from stop. Just wondering if anyone has looked into getting MSD ignition or other high performnce ingnition system installed in their suby, pros/cons?

I think the TECII (they have their own forum) system uses the full-blown aftermarket MSD or similar ignition coil replacement. Probably a good thing, but friggin' expensive. I just stick w/ Torquemaster plugs & Magnecor wires.

As for the intake removal for gary's fix, yeah you really don't have to take anything apart. Though I got frustrated trying to work in such a small, hard to reach space and actually unbolted the knock sensor to get easier access to the plug and wire.

How old is the fuel filter?
When my fuel filter & sparke plug is about 25Kmi, the car bucked at low rpm well, around 2K rpm as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the idea, Trey just suggested the same thing, try changing the fuel filter and sparks plugs and wires becuase it can't hurt anything. If your car had the same symptoms, it sounds like a very good place to start. Everyone I have talked to about this has been extremely helpful. Thanks EVERYBODY!
