Default Split LCAs

2013 WRX with 48,000 miles.

Late Fall early Winter I started hearing a dull thud noise coming from the front suspension. It was barely audible and only occurred when driving over bumps. I never heard anything when turning the wheel nor did I experience any vibrations.

About a month ago the noise became more noticeable and happened more frequently but still only happened when driving over road imperfections.

Before calling Subaru I thought Iíd crawl under and see if I could find the source of the noise. After shaking, prying, and looking at everything I could not find the source of the noise.

As I bend over the pick up my little pry bar I see this

I then went over to the driverís side and see the same exact thing! I think I found the source of my noise!

Has anyone ever encountered this before? I know I live in Minnesota and winters are hard on metal but I have never seen this on any of my previous cars.

My car has always been garaged when at home and gets washed frequently during the winter months.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is this defective? I have an appointment on Friday morning at Subaru but would like to hear if anyone else has seem or heard of this before.

Thanks

Look up recalls and TSB's for your car. I know there was one for rusting LCA's.

I use NHTSA.gov, look up year and model and check out the list.

Or, you know, that's just how they look normally and your issue is something else.

There is a welded seam, but it is just ground flush(ish) before finishing. There are no recalls that I've ever seen for this on a 2013 WRX... but those look damaged... it almost looks like the ball joint shank is bent.

Weird. This is new to me. Iíve changed out stamped arms before in another car and I do not recall seeing them looking like that.
I feel stupid that I never noticed this before. I do all my oil changes and I put in kartboy endlinks as well as front rotor and pads. Yet I never noticed this before.
Given the irregular shape and how far across the split goes, I for sure thought something weird was going on here.

Back to the beginning I go.

Thanks guys.

???
I think several of us agree that those LCA's look bad. May be worth prying on the arms as well as jacking up under the end to see if things are moving that shouldn't be.
Maybe also find a similar year same model and look at those LCA's.

Hereís a pic from the Super Pro lca thread which involved a 2013 WRX.

and mine again

Thereís a difference there but how much is due to camera angle, I donít know... mine just looks all janky.

I have an appointment with Subaru on Friday morning. Iím on my 9th straight 12 hour shift and have no desire to crawl under the car anymore this week.

Thanks.

Thanks for the pictures.
Based on them, and decent looking lines on yours, maybe that is just the design.
Shrug.

PS, looks like jamal nailed it.

Those LCAs look pretty much the same except one is clean and one is rusty.

Looks like you have a different issue than what you think you have.

It might be your ball joints. I kept hearing a thud in my car going over bumps and rough terrain. I checked all the joints with a pry bar and everything was solid. It wasn't until I changed the ball joint to see it actually had a small amount of play in it. I just couldn't replicate it with a pry bar and the wheel off the ground.

It turned out to be the passenger kartboy endlink. It did not appear to have any play but as soon as I started loosening the hardware it just fell apart. The rubber bushings separated and the metal sleeve fell out. The driver side endlink was still intact.
I replaced them and changed out the sb bushings with energy suspension bushings and the noise is gone.
