Default New to me 1992 JDM WRX ?s

I just bought the car a couple of weeks ago with a bad water pump so I'm going to replace that but in the meantime I want to know what all the previous owner may have upgraded/changed. What all should I check/look to see what all he modified? I was told it has 300 hp which is fine but i want it to be safe hp so i want to look at everything to make sure nothing is ghetto. I'm not new to mechanics but this is my first turbo car.

I have a similar one, I'm really just looking for key things to look for under the hood. where would I find a mbc or abc? How can I tell if the waste gate/turbo are stock? It has a big hks bov, what does that affect? It has what looks like 3 inch exhaust from the turbo back. How can I tell if it has been chipped?

Check general maintenance. Look for tool marks or areas of the engine cleaner then the rest. The factory boost controller is mounted to the driverside strut tower. The factory turbo is internally wastegated so in order to check it out you have to pull the turbo to check for porting. Its alot of work with little payout. Its worth checking the turbo shaft for play though.

The ECU is located under the passenger side footwell. again check for toolmarks or evidence that the previous owner was in there. The jackass who had my car before me left 3 snickers wrappers under the carpet next to the ecu. I can be certain he tried other ecu's.

If the work were done by a professional shop they likely wouldnt have left much evidence

Honestly I would be more concerned with the state of the clutch and mtx. That is a far more likely area of abuse by the previous owner.

I checked the ECU and it has a Z4 ecu. I see some wires spliced in to the harness by the ecu so i guess i better trace those and see what they go to, maybe guages or something? Is there something specific I should be looking for to go along with this Z4? The car still has the grey injectors in it and a 3 inch turbo back with no cat. I don't see any signs of a boost controller. Is the stock boost regulator a DENSO brand? Thats whats on there.

Might be worth figuring out where the spliced wires go.

I'm confused you dont see any boost controller or you dont see the factory boost controller. You would either have the factory controller or an aftermarket; not both.

It will be mounted to the strut tower rhd driver side.

I'm assuming that its the factory controller, its on the strut tower and it looks old and it had 2 vacuum lines going to it. It had DENSO on it I think, I figured it was the original boost solenoid or an old replacement
