Default whats the deal with Snow and Ice in the well?!

Iv noticed that my 03 Wagon builds up a very large amount of snow and ice in each wheel well anytime the weather gets that nasty. The stuff just cakes right on. and ices over so you cant just Knock it off. Its even touches the tires sometimes, on the highway you can hear the tire rubbing the unbreakable snow/ice thats caked on. I dont drive in any worse conditions then anyone else, and i dont see it being such a problem on other cars.

so whats with the design and how the hell can I prevent this/break the ice snow without breaking plastic with it. again, its literally grinding on my front two tires, the rear two have MAYBE a paper width between the snow/ice and tire, but the fronts hit especially when trying to turn u hear the tire rubbing, or decelerating (nose dips) you hear the rubber.

You should see how much Snow/Ice would build up on my 04 Stang

The best way to fix it is to keep the car in a warm place, preferrably a garage. If you don't have one, the only thing to do is wait until it warms up a bit and then try knocking it off with a snow scraper, or at least thats what I do.

Ummm...take it to a car wash? I mean really, this is not a Subaru problem this is a car problem. I've never owned any car that didn't do exactly what you're talking about.

I keep a gardening tool in my car called a "manual weeder" or somethin glike that. Discovered years ago that its the perfect tool for chunking compacted ice/mud out of wheel wells. I'll try to find you a picture.

Usually can be found at Home Depot and the like...about $3-4.

You can see the tip is slightly angled. Helps to keep from scratching the fender liner.

Happy Scraping.

I use the manual carwash to clean the snow and ice out of my wheels and wheel wells. I don't usually pay. I just use the spray wand and the slight amount of warm water that comes out to dig out all the frozen crust. It works great.

Try waxing the wheel-well or applying some spray-on silicone lubricant. Both work fairly well.

Be careful when trying to remove it, sometimes you can remove items off your car you dont want off, fender liners, mud flaps and side skirts are easily broken trying to remove ice. It will fall off eventually.
look at where I live I should know.

i have the same problem with the snow/ice and such. i see many other cars in the area with the same issue as well. my fiancee's eclipse spyder does the same things. you just have to try and keep it cleaned out, with a good strong tool to scrape it out (careful not to scratch the paint tho). that is the best i have found. i aleady broke one snow brush this year cleaning the wells out. good luck to you, everyone in snow areas has to deal with it.

I live in Gunnison which gets around -15 in the winter nights most of the time and I get this problem on my wrx wagon, I just used a hammer to pound the ice out cause it was packed really hard and was frozen solid
