Thumbs down Alright, I guess I'll be the one to post a review of the Long Beach CART race

(YAWN)

I thought these cars were supposed to pass each other ar some point. Why the hell couldn't DeMatta just go balls out, late braking into a corner and overtake Helio? Even if he would have slammed him, at least we'd have something to talk about. At least Tracy was driving agressive. It was nice to see a couple of passes at least.

Oh yeah, as always a "stellar" performance by the ABC broadcast crew....LOL! Scott Pruett really drags an already bad production to new lows! I liked him when he dominated Trans Am back in the 80's though. He just shouldn't be doing commentary.

yeah it was pretty boring I have to admit. I think that type of track is worthless. If you are going to use a non-oval course use one with a lot of tarmac and corners that can be taken with diferent lines. Anyway, there will be exiting races this year.
It is funny to watch F1 and Cart. In the non-oval tracks, I enjoy seeing CART drivers shifting gears like regular humans :-)

I am glad somebody had the huevos to say something. That was a boring race. The track is laid out so that its either too darn narrow, or the two good passing zones are ruined. The first good passing zone is junk because before the long straight, is a super tight hairpin that ONLY ONE CAR can fit, so basically only one car can get on the gas at a time, and they are forced to run single file through the entire straight. Unless one car is substancially faster than the rest, you are out of luck.

I hope things get better, is it me or does CART seem rather bland without montoya. I just dont find myself gettting up for CART this year, as I do for Formula 1...

anyway, we can hope for better later.

Just to offer the perspective of someone who has been going to Long Beach for a few years, the recent changes to the track lay-out have had a subtle but negative effect to the track. I believe it was about 4 years ago that the organisors decided they would be clever to run the cars around by the new Long Beach Aquarium, by turning the track left at the end of the front straight.

Before, they had been running a configuration where they turned right off of the front straight, into a safety chicane which was similiar in lay-out to Portland's front straight chicane (90 deg right, immediate tight hard left back onto the old track, then the right turn of the old course).

What this old course had, and what the new lay-out needs, was a pair of fast sweepers leading onto the back straight. The back straight is the problem. It is a great back straight, because it is very challenging due to bumps down around the braking zone at the end, which has made for many exciting moments in the past. The problem is that they gave up ~1/3 of the total length that they were using before.

There was complex of three turns leading onto the back straight, which caused the teams to have to make more compromises in their set-ups. The first of the turns leading onto the back straight was a 90deg right which had an entrance that was a narrow short chute which opened out at the apex into a medium width exit. It went directly into a fast sweeper to the left, followed by a fast sweeper to right which put them on the straight. The exit of this last sweeper is located just before where the current lay-out has the cars entering the back straight from a hard 90deg right. But they would not lift through the sweepers, so in effect, the start of the start was as soon as they could stand on the gas back at the 90deg right before the sweepers.

So where they are now entering the back straight, before they were coming out the last of two fast sweepers, probably in 5th if not 6th gear. Now at that same point they are just entering the straight in 2nd or 3rd gear.

This is important because they were setting the car up for two passing zones, but each were very different to set-up for. As was pointed out above, they crawl around the hair-pin in 1st gear, and then try to get the rear suspension to squat and grip for a gear run from 1st to top gear to race down to the 1st turn. Where as before they had to also worry about their gearing and chassis for the 3 turns leading onto the back straight.

I think it is a subtle difference, but with only one primary passing zone, the chassis choices are easier, so everyone is going the same direction on their set-ups, and we have a boring race.

Of course, I could be wrong... and I often am!

Thumbs down

CART needs to dump these street races. With the identity crisis they are having, bringing CART racing to a 'market' should not take precedence over good racing (which is what people want to see). If you go to a street circuit, you can't see anything due to the walls. The driver's hate the walls. There is no place to pass. What's the point?
Natural road courses are the best, and there are still several un-utilized courses out there (Road Atlanta, Sears Point, Watkins Glen).
Ovals... well, they bore me to tears, but too many US fans think that's racing, so I guess we're stuck with them. If it were up to me, NASCAR and IRL could keep these for themselves.
As for ABC, I think I'm the only guy who actually likes Paul Page but we need to get rid of Scott Pruett. Where oh where is Tommy Kendall? He was the best, but ABC was too cheap to pay him a decent salary. Could be worse I guess, we could have Sam Posey.

I have to agree with the comments on Scott Pruett. He just looks like a deer in the headlights sometimes. Whenever they cut to him he just basically says what any other person would say in his place.

"Yah, Tracy tried that pass but just couldn't get by. He'll have to wait for later. Boy cars are going pretty fast around here. Back to you guys."

Now Parker Johnstone, that guy can ramble on for hours. I don't see why they even need Pruett around with Johnstone being the human equilavent of a racing encyclopedia and all!

I think all they need is one guy asking questions and Parker answers them. He can talk for hours.......

IMO, CART should have more road course instead of oval and more dangerous street course. I guess cities that holds temp street course usually make big contribution to CART so that might explain why.

Oval with open wheel sucks big time. Not much running side by side action like NASCAR.

I was so happy when they finally got rid of Danny Sullivan, but they seem to have replaced him with someone equally as inept at commentating; Scott Pruett.
