What are the best places to live/ go to college?
I am currently attending the University of Maine (orono). It is a good school however only preparation for me to get into something better and somewhere else. I am turning 22 and have been an Army Reservist for 2 years now. I applied at Penn State (altoona) and was denied.
I have been attending a crappy CC for two semesters and one of my semesters I left for training and neglected to withdraw from my classes (my mother had power of attorney and when I left thinking she would be allowed to withdraw me the school did not allow it, so I recieved two administrative failure grades making my GPA too low to transfer) However now my GPA at the University of Maine starts fresh, so I am shooting for the Deans list this semester so I can transfer to a school of choice. I picked Penn St. Altoona because it allows me to transfer to Penn State University Park after only 1 or 2 years. That school is great and I was just shy of making it into the Altoona campus (which is near University Park and I would be able to participate in the Army ROTC with the rest of them) I am looking for opinions on the best states to live/go to college. I am transferring schools and continuing my enrollment in Army ROTC but because I am a prior service I will be living in the state I go to college in and transferring into a unit there while I am in school (I still have to do my one weekend a month even though I am in ROTC in College). I plan on transferring to a school, finishing there and commissioning but as a reservist so it will be in the same state as the school I am at so I want the best of the two. I am used to and enjoy 4 season weather (wouldn't mind milder winters though) and I do not NEED 4 seasons. I don't like rediculously humid and hot summers and I like a blend of rural and urban areas. Something that offers everything I guess. Oh and I hate rain so Washington State is out out out of the question. I have spent time in these places: San Antonio, TX (too humid in the summer, I'm not a cowboy so chicks don't dig me haha) Missouri (holy hell what a **** hole! the weather is rediculous) South Carolina (hot hot hottt... don't think so) MA, CT, RI, NH (too cluttered, snotty women and I can't stand the accents...no go) Mississippi (Too humid and eh, not my cup of tea) Any ideas? on schools and states? Thanks.

Good choice if you just want some beautiful weather and a decent school.
UC San Diego has the same great weather and a better education, if you're into that. I went to UCSD and it's a great school, ranked 38th in the nation of all schools, 9th in public universities. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandre...udoc_brief.php It's expensive to live around the area though, but that's to be expected in any beach community. |

it's going to vary for every person, we're all different and like different things.
I went to a small business college in Burlington, VT and loved it, but I skied for over 30 days my freshman year too. It's all in your priorities and hobbies and desires... |

+ a gazillion... my girlfriend goes there, and it is a godamn cool town / school. I try to visit her at least once a month. Only drawback I see is it is expensive as HELL to live there, just like someone said above about UCSD.
Also, I'd never go to class b/c I'd be surfing all the time. And banging chicks that look like my girlfriend, but in greater numbers. Ah, to be young again. |

As I was always told and didn't listen to and regret but am making up for now. Go far away, you can always go back. And I went to a small college and if I did it again I would go to a large college. Just my, plunk, plunk 2 cents.

I loved Morgantown, WV for college. If you aren't into the 60k population, small towns and mountains, I wouldn't recommend it.

The problem with this good schools in little hick towns is that you can't find a decent job while you're in school. You basically have to work for $9/hr or whatever minimum wage is these days. If mommy and daddy are paying for it, I guess it doesn't matter.

What kind of degree do you want to earn? I think that is a good place to start before looking at schools.
I'm in the process of applying to University of Hawaii for graduate school. Tuition is surprisingly cheap, and they have excellent business and language programs. Cost of living, on the other hand, is not cheap. Based on what I'm reading, they are very generous with scholarships for many programs. |

My advice, as an old geezer, is to stick with Orono. As you have found out already, there are lots of stupid administrative and paperworkish things in colleges (any college), and getting to know how to work the system at one place is usually better than moving around and having to learn the new way at the new school. Realize that the purpose is to get the degree paperwork, so try to concentrate narrowly on that goal. Hopefully while minimizing drunken partying. (Note: I have been to Orono many times and know how it is up there!)
Also, you can probably get your old CC transcript fixed. There was an article about this somewhere just a few days ago, about people who were in school and in the reserves and got deployed and the schools didn't automatically withdraw them from class. A bunch of senators and stuff threw a hissy and got the schools to back off. I would suggest bringing this up with the CC registrar's office (with supporting documentation) and if they don't cooperate, escalate it to your local representative. |
