V.5 bumper conversion? And some intake/exhaust questions
First off, let me say I am a relatively happy guy right now. Why? Well, first off, I'm officially a senior. Second off, I'm going to be relatively rich in a few weeks. And third off, it's summer...finally. Ah, I know, savour it while I can.
As for the rich bit...here's how it starts and ends. I have applied for a job in several places and could get several of them. Most pay $6-7 an hour. Good enough for me. My parents unfortunately are sending me off to Brown University's summer program. I am being dragged kicking, screaming, and hopefully driving to Providence, Rhode Island. No offense to you Rhodies, naturally. Now the good part is coming up. I'm going to get paid to do this. Yeah, I'm not kidding. Since the program is seven weeks worth of character enriching goodness (or whatever bull they print on the brochures) my dad understands that I can't make any money this summer and he's going to give me a stipend. I'm so excited, but I wasn't delirious. It's all going into the car...well, most of it. The first question I have is on the V.6 to V.5 conversion. Has anyone done it? The 98s I know had different front bumpers...but the 99s were based on the STi V.6 and I was considering doing the V.5 as long as I wouldn't have to change too much. The reason? My bumper is scragged all to he**. I brushed a cone lying in the middle of the road on the right side...the same spot where I have damage from hitting the bottom of my dad's truck...and there is some scuffing where the gravel has come up etc. etc. Price would be about 550, which is almost all of it if I pay for install etc. But I'd like my car to look nice again, and the V.5 bumper would be different. Next up, the exhaust/intakes... Anyone know ANYTHING at all about the SYMS exhaust? I have considered it slightly despite the enormous price. How about the Tanabe Racing Medallion-the one designed for the RS? It's available on NOPI and at TRi Tuning. And the intakes...I have a K&N drop-in filter coming to me (don't laugh...I scrapped together all my change and discovered over $50 in change! CHANGE! it took 2+ hours though). Is it worth it to upgrade to an intake? Can I use the filter with an intake? I'm slightly concerned because the last thing I want to do is put performance money towards a friggin' MAF. Oh, and tires...ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT TIRES! I am sick of the RE92 clunkers. So sick I want to accelerate the tire's wear something fierce. Are Kumhos, ahem, "the way to go"? I like the Dunlops (SP8000) a lot and I worry less when it comes to customer service, tire info, etc. etc. Or should I get an all-season in anticipation of going to college somewhere cold and icy? Thanks guys...I am very excited about this whole setup and I would appreciate your help!

Almost forgot...
The V.5 bumper is being sold at www.revtec.com from what I can tell. Couldn't find a price. Probably $5-600. |

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...but I could've sworn that the ver VI is the same as the ver V. The bumper that is.

It says 270$US for the bumper. Keep in mind you have to get turn signals, fog lights, and some other stuff.

v.4 even! The v.5 is the same as the v.6 (not much changed in the v.6, eh?) Thanks for the info guys. I will send a mail to Rev. Like I said it's gonna cost....270 is just for the plastic, no paint, etc. etc.
Anyone have any experience with the intake/exhaust stuff I asked about? Thanks in advance. Have a good one. |

Yeah, I've done the conversion.
Switched from the MY95 to a MY99 (ver V/VI) bumper. Had to get new turn indicators, fogs, wiring harness (you won't since you already have fogs) but most importantly, NEW INNER BUMPER BEAM! Cheapest alternative to the bumper beam is Rallispec. It's also the lightest alternative. As far as the cost on the bumper, it cost me $200 unpainted thru Subaru. |

It's $290 Canadian through dealer so $270US is too much. What colour is your V.6 (American Style right?) If it's BRP I'll buy it.

Thanks for the help!
Ok...I am waiting for Revtec to send me prices for the conversion. Until then I'm leaving it alone. It looks expensive and I may as well just get it repaired. Hell I may get the dealer to front the price of repairing it since they need to redo the clearcoat...I kid you not, it is peeling...how the heck they could either screw it up that badly or put on that much clearcoat I don't know. Anyway, I am inquiring about converting to the v.4 bumper, the one that needs the octagonal fog covers and such. It's the one K Keetha has and I really like the look. But I may end up just getting it fixed. Just sending out feelers. Bahamut...sounds pretty harsh. What was the total price for your swap? I'm hoping the RS will handle the swap better than the OBS, especially since I already have the v.5/6 bumper on. My v.6 is rally blue and it is a little beaten up. I got a $225 quote on repairs from a body shop. Should I get a new one, I will gladly sell it to whoever wants to buy. It is American spec. Thanks for the advice on the tires, Needascooby. I am leaning heavily towards the 8000s as I was unimpressed with Kumho's presence on the internet. Poorly translated from Korean and with minimal support from any shop around here...I don't care how stiff the sidewalls are. Plus if I get one-season tires then I can justify buying new rims! |

The body mods I don't know about, but seems like you've got enough info 'bout that.
As for tires, definatley go for the dunlops. I've got them on my SI and for the cash they are spectacular!!! $90 a tire can't be beat As for cold and icey winters, get some snows, just save some cash, should have enough by winter good luck bro. |
