I could really use some help, I have some rather specific, general questions that I'm having trouble finding an exact answer to when I comb and search these threads.

The Car: 2011 WRX (Base Headunit)

Headunit looking to install: Kenwood X-991

What I need to know:

1. Can I replace the head unit and still get BT functionality out of my stock SWC AND the stock mic? I believe I found a link to a product that allows you to use the SWC but no word if I need something in conjunction to get the stock Mic to work as well. Im aware I need a Kenwood module to use BT with this headunit.

2. Adding an amp and aftermarket components to stock headunit, is it even worth it? Any success stories out there? I couldnt find any, but this was the least of my research.

The goal is not so much to get loud music, but an amp with filters that would produce better sound quality at higher volumes. The Kenwood deck is fantastic on so many levels, but I love the integration of bluetooth and simple workings of the stock radio, albeit complete crap internally. This of course is the cheapest route, and while attractive, I wont waste my money on a side grade or a bunch of jury rigging nonsense.

3. I've done 2 installs of door speakers. (92 Accord and 04 RSX) How difficult is the front/rear panel removal of the 2011 WRX? Any "gotchas" or prone-to-break parts? I have the Crutchfield instructions.

If anyone can help me out in a numbered reply I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Regardless I'd recommend an amp for the component speakers, typically the sound level desired by those running them is not achieved from just a radio alone.

I bought a sirius tuner to go with my new HU from a Forester, but the Tuner doesn't have the "y" cable included, it only has a straight 2 ended cable. If I were to use this, Will i loose the Ipod interface on my HU? Where can I get the "y" cable from?

Would someone be able to tell me... On an 07 and up legacy / outback radio, the 20pin cd change connector... Pin 7 (mute) in order to mute.. is this pin needed to connect to ground?

I read one place it connects to ground... another place says +5 volts... Can someone please confirm?

Thank you

I am looking to purchase a Pioneer AVICZ140BH HU and I am going to install it in my 2012 sti. My issue is I am not good with these kinds of installs so I am having a buddy of mine install it at best buy.

My concerns are getting all the steering wheel buttons to work, including the 3 Bluetooth buttons, I want them to functions as they do with the factory unit. He said that he could get the radio controls to work and maybe 1 button on the steering wheel to both answer and hang up. But that is not what I'm looking for, I am looking for the steering controls to function as they do now with no buttons left unusable. I am also trying to find out if we could get the factory usb and aux in the center console working as well.

Can someone point me in the right direction for all equipment I would need to get all those steering wheel buttons including the 3 Bluetooth buttons working and if its possible to get the usb and aux working as well.

I read most of the thread but like I said most of this stuff is in another language to me and its a lot of information to take in from someone who never touched this stuff. I need someone to give it to me direct and in one post so I can print it out and hand it to my buddy so he can understand it. That's why I asked if someone would be so kind to list all the parts I would need (including maybe links of exactly what to buy) in one post.

I apologize if this is repeat information I am just completely lost.

Here's a more concise post with issues to be aware of (SWCs, aux jack, USB options, dash kits). All of that is still applicable to 2012 Imprezas and Foresters.

I recently updated that with some new information.

On the SWCs, the bottom line is that the aftermarket HU determines what functions are available. If you want all of the buttons to work the same way as they did with your factory radio, you must choose a model that has that capability. Unfortunately, the HU manufacturers do not tell you.

Speaking of steering wheel controls (SWCs), many people who install an aftermarket HU are surpised to find that their "preset up/down buttons" changed. Short answer -- it's a function of the new HU. It's not a problem in the ASWC (or PAC) steering wheel interface module. It's simply how your new head unit works.

* In radio mode, increment the tuning 1 step (manual tuning). On some models, if you hold the button down longer the HU will seek to the next higher or lower channel where it sees a station broadcasting a signal.

* In CD, DVD, MP3, iPod, etc. modes, go forward/back to the next/previous track or file.

There are separate remote commands for next/previous radio preset. On most HU brands, if you assign buttons to those functions, those buttons will not do the desired functions while in CD, DVD, etc. modes. In some cases, they may do next/previous folder.

Aftermarket Clarion HUs operate like the OEM HUs: the up/down buttons do preset up/down while in radio mode, but next/previous track while in CD/MP3/etc. mode.

For other brands, you can either:

A) Assign your up/down buttons so they work with discs and MP3s. This is the default for the ASWC's automatic programming. Optionally, you can assign your car's on-hook and off-hook buttons to do the HU's preset up/down.

B) Assign the up/down buttons to do the HU's preset up/down. Optionally assign on-hook and off-hook to do the tune up/down commands (and thus disc/MP3 next/previous track/file).

Keep in mind is that the ASWC (and PAC) module does not know what mode the HU is in (or if it's even turned on). The module simply translates each press of an SWC button into the one command that you programmed it to send.

Awesome TY for that info, one last question. Before I go out an buy that HU, do you know any specific HU's that you or someone you know has installed that fully support all of the swc including the bluetooth ones so this way its full proof that it will work instead of me playing the guessing game with the Pioneer AVICZ140BH.

Basically looking for nav, bluetooth, pandora.

These models definitely support commands for pickup, hangup, and PTT/Voice recognition:
  • AVIC-Z110BT
  • AVIC-Z120BT
  • AVIC-Z130BT
  • AVIC-X920BT

The AVIC-X930BT does pickup and hangup, but not PTT. I think the AVIC-X940BT is the same.

I've been told the AVIC-Z140BH does support all 3 functions, but I'd like to get confirmation on what the PTT button does (whether it's only for navigation, or also for phone calls).

A few JVC models also support all 3 functions (sorry, I don't have any specific fmodel numbers).

Awhile back, Kenwood said the only phone-related remote command their HUs accept is 'answer call'. I don't know if that's changed in the latest models.

Unfortunately, most HU manufacturers are non-responsive about what remote control functions their HUs accept via the wired remote interface. You pretty much have to find out from someone that has tried it (and who has a clue on how to program the steering wheel interface module).

I need 3 posts to be able to start a new thread. So I will have to ask here....

I just bought a 2012 Forester which comes with this radio: PF-3297B-A shown on the pictures below (From a previous post. Those are not my pictures)

Quote:

All I want to do is to disconnect the Speed Signal wire. I'm so annoyed that I can't use the handsfree bluetooth when the car is moving.
I have looked everywhere with no luck. All the information I have found is for different units.

So my question is: What wire is it and what do I do with it? Just cut it?

I have already removed the radio and are just waiting to know this information to kill big brother's link to my car...

Thank you!

Is your HU the exact same model? (front CP625U1, Clarion PF-3297B-A, Subaru 86201SC620, rear PR62) There are many cases of Subarus having HUs that look nearly identical, but with different model numbers (and subtle feature differences).

The CP625U1 uses the CAN data bus to determine when the car is moving. You'll need to disconnect both pins 11 and 12 on the 20-pin power/speaker harness. That will also disable the speed-sensitive volume feature.

This harness will allow you to do that without disturbing any factory wires.

The next best option is to extract the pins from the factory radio plug (though some people find that difficult to do).

If you do cut the wires, make the cuts as far away from the plug as possible, so it will be easier to reconnect them.

You must disconnect both pins -- they're a twisted pair, and the HU can still communicate when only one is broken.

Thanks for your reply

I just went to take some pictures:

So it's the same model.

I will check what you told me tomorrow morning.
The white connectors probably have numbers for every pin. just in case they don't, do you know which one is pin 1?

Thanks!

Hi,
I just went to my car to cut pin 11 and 12, but there is no way of knowing which ones they are. There is no number on the connector and there is no "twisted pair" like in the custom cable on the link.

Do you know which ones are pin 11 and 12? (colors?).

It's difficult to guess, as the distribution is this:

-OOOOOOOOO-
O---------O
-OOOOOOOOO-

Here are some pictures:

See this:
Subaru Impreza & Forester 20-pin radio harness pin-out
The factory colors in your 2012 are still the same.

Pssst... there was a link to that at the bottom of the combined harness page.

(and thank you for the pics!)

Thanks SVXdc.

I cut pins 11 and 12 (blue and pink) and secure them with electrical tape.
I went around the block and everything seems fine.
Yes, I will lose the speed sensitive volume feature, but I don't care about that. My main thing was to be able to pair Bluetooth phones and be able to make calls by pressing any of the 6 memory "speed-dial" buttons while the car is moving.

Last week my phone ran out of battery and we decided to pair my wife's phone..... well, we had to get off the freeway and stop at a gas station just to pair her phone. We had to do that because we wanted to listen to music. If I have had to make a call, I wouldn't have stopped, but rather put the phone to my ear. It's stupid that Subaru's safety feature defeats the purpose of having a hands-free system. The same goes to those of you with GPS systems whose wife or friend sitting on the front seat can't change the route to look for a McDonald's without stopping. Or even worse, you are trying to find the closest hospital because your kid just swallowed a popsicle.

.....Ahhhhhhhh... I feel better now....

I have a 2011 Impreza Outback Sport with the CZ624U1 head unit that I'm looking into swaping for one of the 4.3" HD radios from a 2011 or 2012 Forester like this thread:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2166861

What model HU should I be looking for so I do not loose any SWC (radio and bluetooth) functionality?
