I have an aftermarket head unit (Pioneer DEH-4000UB) that has a sub preamp out I would like to use. Is there any reason that I can't separate the +/- L/R wires before the [OEM sub's] harness and run them to the preamp outputs, while leaving the power and other wires connected in the T-Harness?
You could do that. However, the OEM sub is designed to run from speaker level (high level) signals. You may not be able to turn it up satisfactorily loud after switching to pre-amp signals. A long time back, someone posted about changing some of the resistors inside to convert the sub to run from line level, but he didn't post any specifics.

You may also need to add the remote turn-on lead (not included on the OEM T-harness), as the sub's built-in 'sound detect' circuit likely won't work with line-level signals.

On top of that, the OEM sub won't produce the deep lows you're looking for.

IMHO, it's not worth the effort. Look for a used aftermarket sub that already has line ins.

IF that's the case than just turning the bass knob all the way down should get those sub harmonic frequencies out of your door speakers and you can compensate by turning up the sub out. Getting an OEM sub won't get you what you're looking for as it just taps the main speaker wire and won't get those frequencies out of your door speakers.
I can set the High-Pass cutoff anywhere from 50-125hz. And yes I'm aware that it taps the speaker wire, that is why I want to clip it before that part

Thanks, I was afraid of this. I don't mind low volume much as I don't really need booming bass, I just mainly wanted to get a dedicated sub in the system. I can crank up the preamp a bit but it probably wouldn't be enough to match speaker levels. If I can get a sub for cheap enough I'll probably give it a shot and see what happens. I wouldn't mind replacing resistors either as soldering is fun, just have to make sure I get the right ones

Otherwise, anyone have any recommendations for an aftermarket under-seat sub for around $100 if one even exists?

EDIT: Something like http://www.amazon.com/BASS600-8-Inch-Profile-Amplified-Subwoofer/dp/B000OSZA44/ maybe? Just the issue of how to mount it securely.

I recently bought a 2010 2.5i with navi head unit. The unit is stuck on two screens, either language select or the 'do not adjust while moving' warning. Nothing works. My dealer talked to subaru and they said the head unit is dead and will be replaced but it's on back order. Initially the eject button would open the unit, but now it's just completely locked up, nothing works. Can anyone point me to a thread or have any suggestions of what I could try to reset the unit?

hey David. I got my car now and I sent you a new email about buying a 20pin-combined harness. I lost the last one you sent me. So whenever you have time please shoot me a new email on how to put in the order.

Thanks

Hi David,

I sent you an email to the address listed on your website about purchasing a harness but havn't heard anything back. I need to connect an aftermarket Clarion cx-501 to my 2001 VDC, using the already existing McIntosh amplifier and speakers.

Thanks,
Dave L

Would someone be able to tell me... On an 07 and up legacy / outback radio, the 20pin cd change connector... Pin 7 (mute) in order to mute.. is this pin needed to connect to ground?

I read one place it connects to ground... another place says +5 volts... Can someone please confirm?

Thank you

Hi All,

I successfully installed a Clarion CX501 into my VDC with a McIntosh system. I kept the existing amplifier and speakers.

Things I needed:
1) Phillips screwdriver
2) 1/4" socket with phillips head in it to reach a hard to reach screw, also maybe a 1/4" drive small socket wrench would help.
3) Metra 70-8901 Wiring Harness. This is missing the variable dimmer wire, but since the Clarion doesn't use it, that's fine
4) Needle nose pliers to grab the screws and clips that inevitably fell down
5) If your head unit is single DIN then you need Metra 98-8999. Since this Clarion is double-DIN, I didn't need it
6) Soldering iron, solder, and electrical tape
7) A Kenwood CA-SD200 Adapter, cut in half (we only need the circular DIN female end). Some of the wires seemed a little small and I was concerned at first, but since they are just carrying line levels, it worked out fine. This connector also has a shield around it, which may be beneficial for noise
8) A male to male stereo RCA cable, with the ends cut off at about 3 inches
9) Optional: A Bullet Splice Kit, 16-14 AWG (blue), 0.156" tab-male. We only need two of this package of 20. I bought Gardner-Bender Item # 20-163M at the neighborhood OSH. This is so that I would not have to cut the female plugs off of the wiring harness that comes with the head unit (Amp remote turn on, and Antenna Power).

Making the Wiring harness:
The Kenwood adapter has the following pinout:
1: purple, 2:large brown, 3: large red, 4: green, 5: yellow, 6: shields to both grey wires, 7: white, 8: grey center (red), 9: small grey, 10: blue, 11: orange, 12: grey center (white), 13: small red. The small brown wire is not connected.

I connected pins 2,4,6,8,12,13 of the Kenwoood adapter to each other, or large brown, green, both grey wire shield and centers, and small red. To this I connected all four shield from the RCA cables. I then connected the centers of the RCA cables to pins 1-purple-front left (+), 3-large red-front right (+), 7-white-rear left (+), and 11-orange-rear right (+). Pin 5-yellow is connected to the Amp turn on plug of the Clarion (blue/white). I then connected the Subaru wiring harness to the Clarion wiring harness, red to red (switched power), blue to blue (antenna power), orange to orange white (Illumination), and yellow to yellow (memory backup). The black wire from the head unit was attached to one of the screws in the Subaru that already had a wire grounded to it from something else.

I used the info from here as to how to wire up the RCA jacks (last comment by cj):
http://nzlamb.wordpress.com/2010/06/...i-information/

Removing the old head unit:
1) Remove gear shift trim (around shifter). Pry up on the bottom just a little (enough to separate the four metal retaining clips) and then pull straight back. There are a couple plastic pins on the upper part, one of which I broke because I lifted the base too high before pulling backwards.
2) Remove the two screws from the coin tray, set aside
3) Remove ashtray the two screws on top of where the ashtray was. The left one was a bit difficult to get to. Also, these use metal clips to secure the other end of the screws. Try not to dislodge them as they were a pain to get back in the proper place when reassembling.
4) Remove main trim-panel. Gently pull on the bottom part first, then work your way up. Disconnect the cigarette lighter harness when it becomes reachable.
5) Remove the six screws holding the whole assembly in (two to the left/right, and two below)
6) Remove the four screws attaching the climate control unit. The left ones were hard to get to and I used a small socket wrench. I think these screws are not pointed like the others, although I didn't realize they were different until reinstalling. They pointed ones didn't fit here well, but they did everywhere else.
7) Remove assembly, remove old head unit, install new head unit (same holes but use the screws that come with the new head unit)
8) Connect new wiring harness and test radio. Don't forget ground wire.
9) Reassemble in reverse order.
10) Enjoy great sounds

The total process took about 5 hours. The final quality was MUCH better than the tape adapter that I was using before. Hopefully I can sell the working McIntosh head unit for as much as I bought the Clarion for. There is small amount of high pitched engine noise, but it seems to occur only in acceleration. It is less noise than the McIntosh that it replaced.

So I just bought a NAV HU from a 2012 Subaru Imprezza. It looks like the ones that would have came with my car if I ordered it. Am I safe to assume it's plug and play in my car? Do I need to buy GPS antena or something? I have the 20 pin combined harness from SVXc that was going to be used for aftermarket amp install. Can I just use it to connect the NAV unit to my harness? Just want to leave it in the car so I don't lose it.

I believe the newer NAV unit doesn't use that 24pin adapter. I could be wrong here. Plus I have the Premium WRX so it should be Nav ready. I'm not sure about the Antena though. I need some more insight on that.

looks like it uses a 28pin adapter

i would be suprised if you had a GPS antenna, you might have the wiring so it can plug in, but i don't know why they would install it in a vehicle that doesn't have it ordered as it would be a tremendous cost over all the cars.

I believe it has more to do with the trim option. The base WRX doesn't have the harness for the NAV Unit so that's why it wasn't even an option for them. Premium, Limited, STi and Limited STi all have the NAV option so I'm thinking they must already included the harness? lol I could be WAY off here but hoping for the best. We'll find out when it gets here lol. Hopefully David (SVXc) will be able to chime in on this and has the necessary harness for me to install it if need be.

right you might have the plug unused behind the radio but no antenna connected to the other end. kind of like the SAT ready cars that have the plug but no antenna

The antena wouldn't be too expensive. I see a bunch for around $15 or so. I just hope it isn't hard to install or find a place to put it lol.

I just wanted to say thanks.

I'm about to replace a stock 2009 Forester navigation head unit with a Kenwood DNX6190HD. The pinouts and data here will hopefully make it relatively straightforward.

Although it did lead me to spend $80 on the Subaru trim piece rather than $10 on an ugly plastic filler ring to block the extra inch of width in the dash opening to allow for the stock unit, so I guess it's not all good

Yes, I've had email and physical mail from him, so he's alive. I guess whatever he's doing for you is harder than the cable he did for me.

My question: Have a 2011 Outback 2.5i Limited (USA) with bluetooth voice. Can I swap out that head unit for a 2012 one that has bluetooth music streaming (which was standard in 2012 I think).

I do not have a USB port (just aux). Can I easily install a USB port in the center console next to AUX?

Thanks,
Jared

I have a problem with the bluetooth connection in my 2012 WRX. I am using an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1

I can pair the phone with the car, but every time I get in the car I have to manually re-connect the phone to the car. After that it works just fine.

I expected the phone to reconnect automatically every time I got in the car, is this what should happen?

Thanks in advance.

Did you set up the phone using the voice menu or physical buttons? If you used physical buttons you'll have to manually pair your phone every time.

Yup, used the physical buttons to set it up. I deleted the pairing and re-paired with the voice menu. It works now, thanks!

Is this through the GPS? I don't have GPS but what luan87us suggested worked.

Has anyone experienced the OEM Nav HU for a 2012 WRX crashing/restarting? Mine will crash 0-5 times, usually after 30 seconds or so, starting when I start the car. Eventually it settles down, but it's still annoying. I think it's related to the Bluetooth connection process, as it didn't happen until I changed my phone from an iPhone 4S to a 5 (which uses a different BT system.)
