Will these tires rub? Will those tires rub?? Let's get it STRAIGHT!!
OK, I dunno....you guys are confusing the HELL OUTTA ME!!!
Every day someone posts a thread about certain sized tires fitting and/or rubbing....with stock or aftermarket tires... I've seen threads with people saying that one a 225/50/16 WILL FOR SURE fit a stock RS MY00 rim, and another post with THE EXACT same size and brand tire saying that they rub. We need to make some kinda chart, showing what tires wil work and what wont work, based on experiences, and post it online. I dont know what to believe anymore! Whats going on? Sorry if this is a bit of a rant...dont mean to pick on anybody....heres my question and I want a final answer (please!)!!! I have a MY00 RS, with the STOCK 7" wide rims. I wanna put on 225/50/16's (either Kuhmo 712's or RE730's). WILL THEY RUB???? ANYONE??? Sorry for yelling!

OK...I know you're going to hate this, but The Kuhmo's and Bridgestones in that exact same size, actually have slightly different measurements. Look at the specs...
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...=Potenza+RE730 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...CSTA+Supra+712 And they're both different than the stock tires... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...l=Potenza+RE92 Basically, I'd want to get the one with the lesser tread width to help ensure the lack of rubbing. Hope that helps a little. |

Lesser TREAD width? Shouldnt it be lesser SECTION width? They're both 9.2" wide....I would assume the edge of the tire would rub the strut, not the tread. Right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have Kumo 712
I have the Kumo 712 on stock 1999 2.5RS Rims and yes they rub a little in the rears, not enough to concern me, for a few reasons. I also have on V5 springs so the car is about 3/4-1" lower than stock. The tries rub on the very inside of the fender lip contacting the tire on the very outside of the tire wall. It does it under heavy bumps when my damping is not turned up. I just had the car at the track and I did not hear it rub under heavy connering but there were a lot of other noises going on then so the being able to hear tire rub would be difficult, not to mention the helmet. There is a slightly visable suff mark on the tires but I mean very slight. So I guess if you are running stock suspension you will not have a problem but they do rub a little. If I can I will try to take a picture tonight and show you the scuff marks. No promisses though. I hope this helps.

GooseMan, what you are asking for (a chart with all the combos and what will work and what won't) is basically alive and well here in this forum. What you are seeing by the contradictions in what fits and what doesn't is that there are a variety of other factors that impacts the fitment of x tire with x rim with x suspension.
What works on my car may not work on your car. As far as those two tires, even though they are rated the same tire size, as mav1c pointed out, the actual physical dimensions can be different from model to model, and especially manufacturer to manufacturer. |

Yeah, I guess youre right. I dunno what to do now!!! ARGH!!
I'll prolly be running a GroundControl/KYB AGX setup in spring, and get the tires at the same time. Actually, are most of the rubing concerns with rubbing of the inner fender, or the strut itself? I think I'll just have to go with 215/50/16. Slightly smaller diameter...but theres only ONE good tire in that size. BFG G-Force KDW..and around here its like $190 CDN per tire! |

Sticky post, Por Favor?
Even though I threw his keys into the Ocean before a great
dogfight with some Migs (lil' joke here), I gotta agree with the Goose. Moderators, can we make this a sticky post? Can it include rims/tires that WILL rub, and ones that won't? A table may be too much to ask (unless someone wants to do some research and fight w/ Excel), but a sticky would at least give us one place to look...I know, searching isn't that hard...but still... An alternative that is more work...hook up with a good tire place, and tell them the story. Some places will test-fit tires you get through them...if they don't fit, they take them back and you try something else.
From what I've heard, it's more to do with rubbing of the rear fender area with a load, and on the front at the firewall area at full lock. |

I would also like this to be a sticky thread.
I have had my experience with 17" rims and tires but the rubbing was because of certain alignement settings. I have a MY00 RS with ADR RS2000 17x7" +50 offset rims with Yokohama AVS Sport 215/45ZR17 tires. Stock struts and springs with Whiteline adj. rear sway bar (set at 20), endlinks (front and rear), strut tower bars (front and rear). I had NO rubbing, even with a fully loaded car and hard corners. I then had my alignment doen according to Rallispecs specs of -1 degree camber in front and 0 degree camber in the rear (yes you will need cam adjusting bolts) and then I had rubbing of the rear tires on any medium turns and medium bumps. The tire's sidewall was rubbing against the fender well lip. Because the 0 degree camber at the rear brought the tire too close to the fender. Again rubbing ONLY at the REAR. Then I had my alignment redone and used my own specs of -1.5 degree camber at the front and -0.72 degree camber at the rear. I now have absolutely NO rubbing. So basically my issues had to do with alignement camber settings. |

You cannot make a list of tires that will rub or won't rub- seriously. There are too many combinations that affect whether it does or doesn't. Offset, wheel width, tire width, sidewall height, camber, strut, spring.... it cannot be realistically done. I can put a 225/50/16 tire on my STi III's on my car lowered 2" yet someone else with a different suspension and the same lowering can't.... see what I'm getting at?

I had Pirelli P7000SS on my car with the stock suspension in 225/50 16. They did not rub unless I overloaded the trunk or back seat. They had an absolute minimum clearance between the strut shaft, however. I do not think that you can fit anything with a sectional width greater than 9.1" on a stock RS without issues. In either case the 225/50 16 P7000 has a sectional width of 9.1" and fits fine. With a GC/AGX setup it never rubbed, even dropped about an inch and a quarter.
