yes, MY stands for model year.

Ver 1, etc. stands for "version 1", version 2, etc. it is basically different body styles.

versions pretty much differ in looks...for example...version 4 has a different front bumper from a version 5(current rs bumper)..version 5 and 6 have slightly different wings..you get the idea

yeah, it basically just numbers the body cahnges (albeit, slight) over the evolution of the car's life.

The "versions" mostly refer to the Japanese models (since they've gotten the WRX from the beginning). The newest WRX and STi models of the current body style is the Version 6.

The infamous 22B is based on a STi V4.

The 2.5RS appears to use parts from several versions:
WRX Version 5 front bumper (except MY98 and Canadian models which uses version 3?4?)
Version 2 rear bumper
STi Version 3 wing (if not V3 then really close, because the coupe wing is a dead-ringer for the wing on the STi-III Type R coupe in Gran Turismo).
MY98-99 wheels are same as version 5, MY00-01 is version 6?

I'm sure half of this is wrong but they'll correct me.

It's also identical to what the Mitsubishi Lancer does they just call it EVO (or Evolution).

there was also some differences in power outputs and suspension b/w the different versions. and the version number refers to the STi version, not the standard WRX. its just like with the Evos. each standard lancer (basically a mirage) is not refered to by a version number, just a MY.

While I know you can't read Japanese, this is the best site to see at least the physical differences in the STi Versions:
http://www.subaru-sti.co.jp/product/impreza/index.html

Took me 3 days to find that damn link!

Cool

Take a look in the Subaru section of GT2 for the primary cosmetic differences.

The RS is pretty much a bastardized mish-mosh of old WRX parts.

It looks like the RS has Ver5 sideskirts. The Ver6 skirts look a little more flared at closer to the wheels? Anyone agree?

I think it's the paint color playing tricks, but you may have something there...
