Default Upgrades Can Be A Slippery Slope My Friend

New to this site and this is my first post. I am writing this to share my experience with other "newbies".

After 3 years of saving and extensive research, I recently just got a second hand 2017 WRX about 4 months ago and it is amazing. I have only driven trucks all my life, so it a huge step up. I honestly didn't get it for the power. (Yes, is can be and it is powerful to an extent). I chose this car because I love semi-adorable tune-able sports cars. Although raw power is very appealing to me I didn't necessarily want a car with a ton of power. I wanted a reliable, sporty, responsive, decently quick car.

Over the past 4 months, I feel that the WRX has exceeded my expectations for a fordable fun car. What has surprised me the most is the power. Before you laugh, I actual am happy with stock power numbers never really saw the point in reaching insane power numbers for my daily driver.

Don't get me wrong I love power, and sometimes the stock hp numbers aren't necessarily ideal. I feel that it is super easy to get wrapped up in "mo POWA".

Before I start this next paragraph I'd like to point out that I have been working on cars for a while now and long story short that car had a little fender bender so it was super cheep, nothing mechanically wrong, cant even notice it (honestly a steal). The funny thing is, I had a little money left over, and I went ahead and got an accessport and went sage 1. It is great, the power is noticeably better. I know hold your comments , I probably have like 260 whp. But I love it, and its enough... for now.

Once I went sage 1 with a cold air intake I feel like I have been transfixed on the idea that more power equals better car. This is idea of wanting more power is not necessarily a bad thing (just gonna hurt the wallet). I work on cars all the time so I can do all the installs on my own. So I've spent countless hours looking for good inexpensive parts. But now, I really want to go "stage 2". Just a month ago I said that "there is no reason for me to get and access port to gain power", but alas... I ordered a down pipe last week.

I think that the fact that power is expandable on tuner cars makes you want to gain more power. Now I'm sitting here with a car that is much faster and responsive that I would ever need, and you know what I think I really like it. WhAt dO I NeEd tO Do TO gO sTaGe 3. jk

I decided to write this because I thought that is would be a funny story to tell. Super happy with all the decisions that I have made with the car. If you want to judge me on how I went way too fast on the upgrades, be my guest (your not wrong). If anyone has any "how did I get here" modding stories I'd love to hear them. Thanks

honestly the stock airbox is more than adequate for several hundred horsepower over stock.

CAI are kinda irrelevant as well... the stock box really is one. plus you have an intercooler so who cares.

glad youre happy with the purchase, and youre absolutely right. Stock power is more than enough for most driving conditions on public roads.
Unfortunately you've been bitten by the "mod bug". From here on there is no turning back. It's an addiction.
What makes it worst for me, i'm on my 2nd WRX, had the last one for 9.5 years. The moment I got my current one, I had to make it at least equally as fast as the previous one.

Slippery slope indeed. My '06 has 194k now and is on its fourth motor, plus an STi tranny that has been rebuilt.

Looking back, some "silly things" happened along the way that certainly should have stopped with my second build. That one developed rod knock after my aftermarket cat clogged and overheated a cylinder. Number 3 died by the moneyshift (via the non-rebuilt tranny at the time).

I monitor everything now, drive more carefully with gauge readings in mind, and #4 I hope will keep running strong for quite some time.

Suppose I just should have bought a GT-R in the first place!

I did Cobb 93stage 2, and I love the pops and gurgles you get.

As we all know, pops and gurgles mean MO' POWAH BABY. (I'm assuming you were referencing Donut)
