First thing you need to know is that there is no 100%, black and white, sure thing answer. All cars respond differently and what makes 300whp on one car, will only make 280 on another, and 320 on yet another. ON THE SAME DYNO.

Second thing you need to know is that all dynos read differently. So if your goal is 300whp on a dynapak, what you need to get there will be INCREDIBLY different than what you need to hit 300whp on a Mustang dyno.

Even when looking at the same type of dyno, some read lower and higher.

There is fully a 100whp difference between the highest and lowest reading dynos. So if your goal is 300whp on a Mustang, be prepared to shell out a LOT more money than if you want to hit 300whp on a dynapak. And again, even on the same model dyno, some read +/-15+whp.

Where you live makes a BIG difference, elevation severely changes power output, as does the quality of your local gas. Its a lot harder to hit a given hp level on California's 91 octane than on 93 elsewhere.

When are you doing this? In winter, 20 deg ambient temps on winter mix gas? Or in summer in 100deg temps on summer gas?

And most importantly, are you trying to make this power level at the WHEELS or at the CRANK. Take for instance an 04 STI. It makes 300hp. But only about 240hp at the WHEELS. (on an average dyno that is)

So, when you ask "what do I need to hit XXXhp" you need to give us the following information

1. HP at the WHEELS (whp) or hp at the CRANK (chp)?

2. What type of dyno are you going to be shooting for this number on?

3. If possible, tell us what shop it is. Someone may know how high or low that particular dyno reads.

4. Where do you live? If not a well known city, what is the elevation?

5. What kind of gas will you be using? (octane level)

6. Are you opposed to a FMIC? (this way we dont recommend one if you dont want it, or we DO recommend it if you DO want it and it would be beneficial to your setup/goals) (sp?)

Please note, that even with this info, while we can give you a good idea of what it will take, we cannot give you a 100% surefire recipe for making an exact number. You may make even up to 30hp more or less than your goal based on what we tell you.

However, with the above information, we can give you a pretty solid path to take to hit that goal.

But simply asking "I want XXXhp" will get you nowhere. You will get answers that on a given dyno will make WAY more or less than each other, and the cost difference between them will be huge.

The last thing to know, is that in general, people will give you answers based on an "average" reading dyno. Unless you directly state, "I want to make this power on THIS type of dyno"

Hopefully this helps some people out. I see these posts all the time, and the threads get confusing at best with the huge range of setups that people suggest.
Trying to get around 375 380 horsepower to the wheels I have put a bunch of stuff into it already including DW fuel pump, injector Dynamics 1050 injectors, GrimmSpeed top mount intercooler, GrimmSpeed electronic boost control solenoid, AEM cold air intake, tomie unequal length header with up pipe, nameless catted downpipe and full exhaust, 1 range colder spark plug and professionally tune on a Mustang dyno (ECS Tuning Connecticut) and got 313 horsepower to the wheels and 404 horsepower at the crank... .Does this sound about right can someone help me out do I need to upgrade the turbo and go to E85 to see that kind of power???

In my opinion I would be considerate of the stock motor. I ran 362 wheel on a dyno dynamics on a conservative boost and timing tune and a bearing went... I would keep it in the low 300's until you can build the bottom end. After mine blew up I went all in but I used to think I was fine at 360 but I couldn't settle for a nice daily with 300 hp. I had a lot of similar parts as you have but I would be very careful testing the stock motor. You can find tons of threads about it. Some cars last a week at 300 and some last 50k miles on 400 hp. My personal experience was rod knock at 362/340 lol.

Sounds just right .. mine was very similar with this setup and stock turbo. Did you get larger injectors for future potential?

Recently rebuilt my 08 WRX hatch with the following:
  • Manley pistons
  • Stock bore just rehoned
  • King bearings
  • Cobb AP V2
  • Cobb intake
  • Cobb intake tube to turbo
  • New VF52
  • 3in catless downpipe
  • Stock exhaust but not opposed to going to a quiet catback as i'm going for a 'sleeper' build

Still breaking her in and am planning on a tune @ Precision Tuning in NJ at 1k miles. My goal is 300awhp on 93 without sacrificing drivability as I will be dailying the car to and from work and using at a grocery getter.

Is 300 to the wheels with stock exhaust achievable without sacrificing reliability with the parts listed above? If not, what should I add for 300? Injectors? Fuel Pump?

I could be wrong but the stock exhaust has a bit of restriction in the muffler

No. It doesn't. Not at power levels below 400hp. Above that, maybe you could argue it does, but the stock muffler is fine. May not be ideal, but think about a Stage 2 setup from Cobb. They require a downpipe only, not a full exhaust. And that's getting close to the 400 crank hp number with an OTS tune.

I had stock mufflers and it didnt seem to affect power when I was "stage 2"

I don't normally do turbo anything.

I will say.......

What is your altitude (high like Denver will yield lower numbers compared to sea level)?
What dyno? Some read higher or lower than others.
What is the calibration on THAT dyno? There are MANY things that can affect the final readings.
What is your fuel? Arizona, California and Nevada tend to suck (part of why COBB has ACN maps for their AP). Summer fuel vs. winter fuel (NY metro is an example) makes a difference.

To me, a dyno is fine for "before/after" mod runs. Basically, I had this, dyno said this, did that, dyno said that.
Compare to others (sorta) from the same dyno.
Do NOT compare to ANY other dyno in any other location.

Default I made 390whp/360wtq with my set up. I expected more?

Hey everyone,

I'm really just looking for some opinions. I recently finished my built motor and dyno tuned up in southern pa on a dyno jet. I only made 390whp/360twq and ran into some issues while tuning and wanted to know your thoughts.

Here's what I have:

Engine:

Built 2.7 Hydra by Element Tuning
100mm Manley pistons
Manley rods
GSC 272 Cams
Stock Crank
TGV Deletes
Super Tech Valvesprings
ARP Head studs
IAT Visconti
AEM 3.5 MAP Sensor
Grimmspeed 3 port EBC
Aeromotive Fuel Rails
Deatschwerks 340LPH Fuel Pump
Injector Dynamics 1050X (1065cc) Injectors
NGK Iridium Spark plugs
Speed Density on Cobb Access Port

Turbo smart BOV

Blouch 1.5 XT-R (Twinscroll)-IWG
3inch Inlet & 10cm hot side

Tomei Expreme Equal Length Headers & Up-pipe (Twinscroll)

Perrin FMIC

ACT Heavy Duty Street Performance Clutch
OEM Fly wheel

(I may be forgetting some things)

Located in Northern Va but tuned up at PSI Proformance in Lansdale PA.

Final Dyno pull on a Dynojet (Jan. 17, 2019)
4th gear 387whp/360tq @ 21PSI on 93 pump

When I first finished this project my goal was to break 400 to the wheels. I was confident with this set up to at least break 400whp and have torque right around the same, even on 93 pump. If I had to actually ballpark it, I expected to make around 420-430whp and 440-450tq.

Down the road, I do want to eventually go with a cobb flex fuel kit to have the ability to run E85, but it's not a necessity at this time.

While tuning we discovered that the IWG was opening up too soon. We also saw on that last pull that my clutch was starting to slip which pretty much concluded my dyno tune. Granted my clutch is relatively new, I have a friend who ran into this same issue with the same clutch. They are supposed to be rated 515tq to the crank, so I was quite surprised to see it not hold any more than 360 to the wheels.

"Wastegate duty cycles were mid 30's on hit to full boost (according to my tuner). The issue he ran into was he was 50-60% up and the turbo was tapering more than usual. If the spring was off it would have a slow PID to full boost. We had the opposite issue. The turbo was tapering more up top than usual, dropping power a tad even when hitting it with lots of WGDCs."

^(I know absolutely nothing when it comes to tuning so I don't fully understand what he's referring to in all of this tuning lingo.)

Now, knowing what I know, I have been contemplating converting to EWG's and knowing that I am twin scroll, I would need a dual ewg set up. It's rather a complex project to complete a dual ewg on a stock location turbo with this setup. A pretty penny is required (as usual with Subarus imo) to fabricate my current up pipe or have one completely fabricated from scratch to accommodate this. I also plan to invest (unfortunately) in yet another clutch that hopefully doesn't give out on me. I might just throw a 6puck disc in and call it a day, but I may also consider switching out to a lightweight flywheel as well.

Curious what are some of your opinions or thoughts on this and I'm open to suggestions on alternative solutions.

Thanks!

hey guys im new here to NASIOC and to the Subaru world as well, I love all types of cars but have most experience with honda. I recently bought a 2011 wrx hatch with 33k on it and fell in love. I am not sure if this is the best thread to ask this question so forgive me if it's not. I am curious to know if 280-300hp (whp) is realistic for reliable daily driving and where in the North east area are some good pro-tuners to visit. Thanks.

Yes that is definitely an easy to hit number and easy daily driver. I was on about 400awhp and that was still a fun daily until rush hour hit, then my left leg hated me. To hit those numbers you will probably need to add about $1000 of upgrades to hit it.
Starting with intake exhaust header maybe swap to e85 and TUNE IT!!!!
The ecu is not as adaptable as Honda’s are sadly so you need the tune ASAP or once you install each part

Thanks for the advice, I have a CBE and plan on installing a downpipe and an intake with the cobb accessport until I can bring it in for a protune. Combine that with some shocks and springs or coilovers. There is so much information out there however there is also a lot of opinions and as I don't really know anyone personally who has modified any turbo Subaru or any Subaru for that matter it's tough to find out what the right thing to do is with certain modifications. I will always love a well setup N/A honda but I fell in love with the boxer engine as well, they just seem to be a bit more delicate from what ive learned so i'm very hesitant about any mod and I want to be absolutely sure before doing anything to the engine.

Yes there are a lot of opinions and some people get away with some things but most of the time and to be safe, ALWAYS tune for every modification. And yes Subaru’s are very delicate in some aspects. My last wrx was pushing 400 and never had a problem, my current wrx is fairly stock and only pushing 285 and my engine already crapped out.

Yeah those are the type of stories that make me nervous, I will just have to start slow and as you said absolutely tune it after every modification. I would even be happy at 285WHP. I'll just have to be ready for anything financially it looks like. It is my daily driver after all. Thanks for the reply.

Base + 20% on gas (93) would be safe with tune.

This is the first time I have used this forum. I have a 2015 Wrx with a K&N typhoon air intake and Nameless muffler deletes. The car came with an SPT/Sti exhaust. I am looking to tune the car to Stage 2 from COBB. Would I need a J-pipe or would the car be fine without the J-pipe?
