Default MFR Update: Carbeque

There is one less WRX in New England today... One of the transits was held up for an hour while the Oquossic FD attended to a well-toasted WRX. Rumor is someone was imitating the competitors and found trouble...

It actually looks like the car might have rolled before it caught fire. At any rate, there wasn't much left of it. The entire interior was gone down to the bare metal. No word if anyone was hurt.

If no one else gets pics up in the next couple days, I'll grab some stills from video of it sitting on the flat-bed.

Default Maine Forest Rally SS1 WRX Spectator Fire

Anyone know who's WRX got rolled and toasted on the way to the last rally stage? I hear they were passing other spectator cars and flying down the dirt roads irresponsibly from one on the workers...

Unhappy

The following information was gathered from second hand accounts, and radio transmissions from SCCA workers.
PLEASE TAKE THAT INTO ACCOUNT!

Radio:
About 15 minutes before the start of SS7:
Car (a WRX) has been reported as "rolled" on the road to the stage. Abulance requested. There were questions as to the re-routing of rally traffic. Fire reported. Later; No re-routing needed. Fire out.

Second Hand:
A WRX with Canadian plates. Passed cars - going way too fast. Missed hairpin left on route. Slid backwards, fliped backwards onto roof. Caught fire. Driver + Two (women?) in the back seat. Two (women?) were taken to hospital. Driver was unhurt. No status as to their condition. Rumored to be serious.

Sean has pics. I'd like to see a status update first - to make sure everyone is alive.

After Sean had said he had seen the car. I asked "What color was it?" He responded with - "I don't know." - wow++
The car is a mess.

- Is there any wonder why the SCCA is unsure about running rally?!

I dont know much else about it, but I know it wasnt a hairpin left. I saw the charred ashes and they were no where near a hairpin.

I was there pretty early and we talked to two people running traffic, both near the end of the stage, and down where the car was pulled from the woods. The information gathered from webkris is accurate. I saw the thing being towed on the flatbed. Out of four of us, we could not tell it was a WRX until looking at the tail light frame for about 10 seconds.

wow. that really sucks on so many levels. sucks to lose a WRX. sucks to have people hurt. Sucks to have people act like coqs on back roads at events.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "they got what they deserved," but everyone should keep this in mind next time they want to go screwing around at events. I bet they thought it was a fun idea, and I bet they were thinking "I can handle this. no way I'll screw up" just before they rolled.

Well let's just say when the rally cars are done their timed run, and they are travelling to the next stage, you have to pull over for them since they're coming through the spectator roads Spectator cars usually come right up to the end of a stage.

More importantly... did anyone remember the marshmellows?

That sucks. EVERY YEAR there's an idiot up there that does something like this. And if memory serves me right from reading posts, last year or the year before, didn't someone from Canukstan do almost the same thing... passing people on the transit stages?

agreed, although stupid or careless. i don't think anyone deserves to be hurt or wreck their car. nevermind the fact that it tarnishes the event name especially for those of you that made the efffort in going, running and or working @ it.

My friends from focaljet we're passing by after it happened and snaped a pic and took some movies.

The second hand knowledge that I heard from them is that they spoke with the two people that dragged the people out of the car is that it did roll then caught on fire, and that it was the driver's fault.

At the other stage the rumors flew around big time, I even heard that supposedly there was a guy on a horse which is what made the driver swerve into the ditch and roll. I doubt it highly that someone would be riding a horse on a road with a rally going along.

Here's the one pic, I've got, I'll be uploading the movies in a few minutes.

Here's the link for the full size pic.

All I can offer is more rumors...We were delayed after the stage by this accident and told to wait at a point about 3 miles before it; we were the third or fourth car to arrive at the holding area. About 15 of the race cars were waiting there about 25-30 minutes, even though several cars came through and said the accident was cleared. Eventually a stage worker (Ted Mendham) came through and told us to finish the transit back to Oquossoc. We were over 15 minutes late but they weren't scoring that transit because of the delay.

In service, I was told that the WRX was driven by 2 females. Both were taken to the hospital, one was expected to lose her leg and the other was being attended to.

No one could figure out why the accident took place. It was in the middle of practically a long straight. So, perhaps this car swerved to avoid something (another car, or maybe a chipmunk)

Again, this is just what I was told within an hour of the accident and never heard anything else. Rumors that circulate so soon after an accident have a tendency to be questionable. I hate seeing things like this happen. We have these spectators coming out to have a good time, and it ends up possibly in a tragedy. Once again, just reminds us all that anything can happen, accidents are always "unexpected."

Last year, it was some dickhead from VT Sports Car in his M version X5, trying to be a badass and pass 10+ Subarus. I know, because I was in the middle of the pack when he didn't make it pass all the cars before the oncoming traffic. And I was nice enough to let him cut into the middle of the pack right in front of me.

Default I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another........

more 2nd person accounts:

(at stage 10) Sean and I happened to be sitting by one of the medics who were on the scene. He said that the Some car had pulled over to let the WRX through because it was going rather fast. The people in that car were the ones who pulled the male driver and 2 female passengers from the burning car. Supposedly one of the females told the medic that she and the other female had been begging the driver to slow down, just before he spead up and lost it. The medic said that the male driver was fine and did not go to the hospital, but both females were taken away in the ambulance. He suspeccted minor injuries, possibly a broken colar bone on one and a broken ankle/ leg on the other.

We weren't there, this is just what the medic told us.

We heard about this while waiting for the stage to start. At first, the rumor was that it was a Pontiac Parisian, but then word came down that it was a WRX.
