Default Grattan Open Track Day May11th!!!

Last year I hosted an open track day at Gingerman Raceway. This year we are going to have it at Grattan Raceway for two reasons. One, new owners have taken over Gingerman and are a pain in the butt to deal with. Two, is Grattan actually appears to be much more challenging and exciting.

Here is a link to Grattan's homepage for those who are unfamiliar with the track. Motorcycle racers love the track because it has plenty of run-off room and a 1/2 mile straight.

http://www.grattanraceway.com

Here is a link to register for the event. The cost is going to be $125. Hope to see some of you there. The website is still a little rough so bear with us. We are only posting the cars that have registered not the names of the people. Also, your car will only appear as registered once we receive your payment.

4-5 hrs from Chicago. Googlemaps says 4hrs 16min from Glenview, IL. Grattan is near Belding, MI...about 20 minutes northeast of Grand Rapids. I used to live 5 miles from there.

The track is awesome. There are so many different types of corners. There is a fun banked bowl / corner, a couple off-camber turns, a really long straight, and one nice surprise that requires you to turn-in before you can see the corner. Track has lots of run-off areas if you happen to miss a corner. I've been there to watch numerous club racing and vintage racing events. I ran the Labor Day autocross there last year. If only I had more vacation days

Grand Rapids is on the way to the lakes I ice-race on all winter... so I drove through
there a half-dozen times over the past two months. It's two and half
hours from Downers Grove to GR, unless there's heavy traffic or lake effect snow. We made it back to Schaumburg
in 3, one night.

Grattan is a great track. Its pretty famous for its elevation changes and off camber turns. Its a lot more challenging than Gingerman. I'm about 30 minutes from the track.

Same here..

May will be a busy month for me also or i would be in for this. Its a somewhat local track that around here hardly gets recognized. I have heard about a lot of good times there from a lot of good people..

Enjoy your day off at the track

I wouldn't say there is plenty of run off if you screw up but its a great track for the challenge. Much better than Ginerman, Ginerman is so boring compared to Grattan.

Nigel.

^ yeah the elevation changes and over track layout looks really nice, I was surprised it was that cool! Does look better than gingerman, but then again gingerman is pretty straihgt forward and "safe"

Tones of track time for the money!

Last year, if you missed the drivers meeting, you got briefed once you arrived. It's no big deal. This is a laid back, no rules are set in stone, type of event. (except safety)

Hmmm that is sooo tempting and a good price! The track sounds really fun compared to all of the flat tracks I'll be going to all year (Autobahn/Blackhawk). I'll talk to a few buddies and see if I can get anyone to go. Anybody up for a potential Chicago caravan?...Cause I've never driven anywhere in Michigan

Hey SilOnt, I see your from Royal Oak. Are you buddies with Tony S. at all? I need to get a hold of him and let him know about the event. If not, maybe Tom Payne can point me to him.

Car only event. I have a bike too, so I asked that same question. I'll be taking the car.

Is it ok if I'm a complete n00b who's never been to any type of track event before?

Also, any requirements for the car besides good tires/brakes/seatbelts/etc...?

Hey, I have got a question about what class I should enter...
I have only been to one cgi driving school, but I was significantly faster than the rest of the beginner group and demonstrated a very good concept of the limits of my car (according to my instructor), I even lapped many of them and was about a half track or more ahead of the next fastest guy in a c6 vette. Unfortunately, a broken wheel stud and a shredded ring and pinion ended my day one run early. I am also probably going to be doing another driving school may 8th at cgi (I'm going to take it a bit easier this time because I really want to run grattan, not break my trans again).
I am not concerned I won't be fast enough for the intermediate class; it’s more of an issue of "track-smarts", which is usually gained through experience, that is keeping me from confidently wanting to run with the intermediate class. However, I found everything fairly easy to comprehend; I paid attention to the flaggers, kept safety in mind first and foremost. Despite my fast pace I also didn't get to experience what it is like to go off track (for better or worse ). Everything came pretty natural to me (I attribute it to 14 years of snowboarding/racing), but I don't want to be that guy (you know the type, driving the rsx-t that won't let you pass him just because you can't pull enough on him in the straights) but I also don't want to be stuck behind that guy either.
As of now, I'm signing up as a beginner to error on the safe side, but I wanted to know what people more experienced think.

I would stay in beginner, if were you. If traffic awareness is your issue, remember that it is much, much easier to watch what is in front of you, than what's behind you.
