I wondered the same thing! The torque loss was what brought me back to the tuner; it was noticeable.
My understanding is that it was a back pressure thing. The back pressure from the more-restrictive STi axle-back that was on the car made more torque, but choked off the flow at high RPM. The Greddy flows better and so produces better HP, but less torque. I admit, I don't fully understand it myself. See this post: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...re-torque.html From that discussion: "at low rpm the pipes are too big to keep gas flow velocity at it's best if the pipe is sized to keep the flow maxed at high rpm." "Back pressure loads the engine and produces torque. It's all about compromise. Load early and top end hp suffers as the engine labors." The loss of that torque was what drove me to a VF39. Once I lost it I really wanted it back. It was a noticeable difference, and I felt more turbo lag. I'm glad I did, because off-boost drivability is much better with the VF39 over the TD04. |

Wanted to throw an update out there. I have been stage 2 for 4,000 miles now and everything has been working out well. No issues so far at all.
**Granted it is practically still new but there have been engine failures on brand new cars. The car is driven fairly conservatively during the week. It has been through 3 autox events and some spirited driving every now and then. Also wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed so far. After reading countless horror storries of engine failures, it is nice to see so many people doing well with the stock block. |

Has anyone had to take all this ***** off in order to bring their car in for service. Just curious.

K&N typhoon, Grimmspeed EBCS, Godspeed Catted DP, SPT Catback It's been a little over 1 year at stage 2 (about 6 months with the EBCS tune) and it's great. |

I've been 20k miles on stage 1 and now 5k miles on stage 2 with nameless TBE and a torqued performance tune which on virtual dyno gave me numbers of 295 whp and 310 wtq, which i believe to be about 95% accurate to a real dyno. Feels great, drives like a champ, and no issues whatsoever. Slight boost leak on the stock bpv which is to be expected.

Stage 2 with Invidia catless turboback. Never had it dynoed but the car felt very torquey until about 5k rpms. Got bored, went K&N typhoon sri, Grimmspeed ebcs, vf39, sti tmic. Protuned by Harvey at The Boost Creep in Longmont. Car made 296 whp and 325 wtq. Ran stage 2 for about 15k miles and now 2k on with the vf39 |

I bought my 2011 wrx new and drove it stock for maybe a month. Got a cobb SRI and flashed stage 1+sf on it, ran that for about 6 months or so. I then installed a catless downpipe and ran an open source tune for about 6 more months. Eventually I switched to the cobb stage 2+sf map which seemed to run a bit smoother in my opinion. Installed a process west top mount intercooler and ran the same stage 2 map for a little while. I was getting some overboost so I went with a grimmspeed up-pipe with the external wastegate, added some colder plugs, 1000cc ID injectors, fuel pump, grimmspeed BCS and a protune. It made 293/310 and it was pretty fun for a daily driver. At about 25,000 miles I started noticing some blue smoke on cold starts and figured it was oil blowby (which it was) and cleaned the intercooler, intercooler pipes, bpv, and some of the throttle body of oil residue. The smoke was gone for a little while but eventually started making it's way back. A/F was getting a bit quirky earlier this year and I knew in my mind that one of the piston rings was letting go.
Sure enough the piston ring was toast in cylinder #4 I believe and basically I went with a whole new motor/turbo setup. I had fun with the car while on the stock motor but didn't really seriously beat on the car too much. I don't know if it was one of the 4 maps that I had used or maybe just mechanical but it definitely should have lasted a bit longer. I had planned on building the motor and looking for more power anyway but it just happened to come sooner than I had hoped. Thousands of dollars later I'm back in the car making a healthy 381whp/389wtq on a blouch 3.0 with a pretty safe tune and loving it. |

Chance are, even if he hadn't made the modifications, the engine would have blown 10k later. Could have been a bad tune, etc etc, but... Get a high quality tune if you're going to go to stage 2. -- 140k 2005 Stage 3 STi |
