Default "Whine" in engine

Hey everybody....just picked up my '08 WRX sedan last night....had an '04, sold it in '06 (started a family)...now I'm BACK!

Turned the key to ACC last night and popped the hood....I heard a "whine" sound that didn't stop. It sounded like a fuel pump, but it just wouldn't stop until I turned the key off. Anyone familiar with this? It's faint, and can't be heard inside the cabin.

I'm liking the 2.5 so far (less than 24 hrs)....what an improvement over the 2.0! I'm anxious for the combined minds of this board to unleash more of it's potential!

I can't tell you how happy I am to be back!

Can you isolate it under the hood? Tell us more about your setup.

Throttle body. Part of the drive by wire system.

Not really related to your "whine". But has anyone noticed the "whine" that increased under hard throttle acceleration in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear? Sounds like a "gas turbine" spooling up....... I'm not exactly sure if it is the turbo, or if its from the trans, regardless.........it's cool.

Its the servo that controls the throttle plate. Its normal on all the Subaru DBW cars. I was a little concerned at first, but then I quickly got used to it. Its normal, nothing to worry about.

Thats your turbo, though if its loud enough to hear that clearly maybe your intake tract has been modded, like the silencer delete or a cai or short ram.

I had the dealer tell me that the transmission whine on the STi's was the turbo spooling up

Nope, the car is bone stock. I'm actually leaning more towards "gear whine", it seems to be more linear than a turbo spooling would be. Maybe if I get bored later, and if it slows down, I'll throw the chassis ear on it and go for a drive.

It's a 6 channel selectable mic, hearing aid thingy. Basically when you have a sound and you don't know where its coming from, you mount the 6 mics in the places where it "could" be, and go for a drive. You switch around that mics until you get to the one where you hear the noise the loudest......then look for the problem there.
