weighted shift knobs concern
Does anyone have any knowledge/experience whether a weighted aftermarket shift knob can cause any damage as stated in an ad from an OEM part seller...
"If you have a shift knob that is too heavy then you could be adding too much stress and strain to the shifter components which can cause miss shifts, or these ridiculous shift knobs can cause premature wear to the synchros of your transmissions.

I wonder if they have an agenda? I have one, it's solid copper, weighs about 10x's what the plastic factory one weighed. Shifts much smoother to be honest. I can't think of any legitimate reason a heavier knob would cause wear on linkage parts or synchros. I've been running it for about 50,000 miles so far and I don't expect to ever have major transmission issues, or at least not related to the stupid knob. |

if it's crazy heavy, it can wear out the shift forks in your transmission, it's like holding your hand on the shiftknob.

won't be an issue for the 2015+ wrx as it uses cable link. wouldn't really be a concern for direct linkages either really so long as you're not resting your hand on the shifter all the time. i've had a weighted shift knob for almost the whole life of the car, i do however have the kartboy short shift linkage mod which requires more force to get it into gear.

I don t know cause I m the one asking but it seems that resting your hand is heavier and also may pull in a direction as it probably won t be straight down force. So a heavy LONG shifter can produce that same leverage in a direction. But a few hundred grams of low position weight????

That tiny weight practically straight up puts barely any measureable force front to back. it's moronic |

cables have slack, direct linkages do not. also i clearly said it's not a concern for direct linkages either but resting your hand on the shifter is.

4th gear chatter
I have a weighted shift knob on my 2016 WRX, and I also agree that it makes shifting much smoother, however, I have noticed that when the vehicle is placed in 4th gear, there is a terrible chatter that resonates on the knob. Anyone have a similar issue, and should I be concerned of this?

I have about 35k on my Boomba shift plate/short shifter along with a Raceseng Topology shift knob (2016 WRX). Over 50k total on the car, have Mobil 1 gear oil in it and it shifts beautifully. I've put a short shifter and weighted knobs on every vehicle I've owned since the 1990s without ever having a problem.
A. Don't shift like you're some D-bag in a Fast n Furious movie B. Change the gear oil according to manufacturer's recs with a high quality spec product C. Don't shift like you're some D-bag in a Fast n Furious movie Unfortunately the majority of the WRX owners I see fall under A and C. Flat bill, rev their stupid muffler delete catless Depot Racing J pipe engine when they pass me douche nozzles. It's easy to see why the WRX has an image of being unreliable. |

To be more on topic, most adult arms weigh more than weighted shift knobs offered in the aftermarket. |

But these adult arms aren’t resting on the shifter the entire time the car is on, so how’s that relevant?

I think it is a valid concern and yes, a heavier weight on the end of the shift lever will increase wear, albeit to a degree you cannot measure. Most people won't own a car long enough to notice a difference in wear.

I would not be concerned with any of the available weighted knobs causing issues, even if I believe the main purpose of a weighted knob is to enrich the seller.

People spend $200 on titanium lug nuts to save weight and then get a lead shift knob.
I don't get it. I come from the Colin Chapman school of car stuff. Add lightness. I'd be drilling holes in the stock plastic knob to make it even lighter. |

I can't speak to the titanium lugs (actually the ones I've looked up are even more expensive than that...) since that's not something I'd personally ever pay for, but in for most people real-world driving is more about a balance of performance, comfort, and fun. I mean, yeah if a shelled out car with a roll-cage and no heat/AC/Radio/sound dampening/plastic windows/etc. and a carbon-fiber tub for a seat is the way you enjoy driving it all the time then more power to you.

I've had an Anarchy motive knob on my wrx for probably 5 years now. Other than some paint flaking when I originally got it, it's been fine. It helps make the shifting smoother with the Kartboy SS kit.

I just hope they didn't go out of business. Havent updated their facebook in some time, didn't respond to my email yet.
I know they've had issues with lead time but 12 weeks for a block of metal ... sheesh |
