Default Best oil to use in a turbo wrx...

I'm sure there's alot of these kinds of questions being asked, but what kind f oil should I use and what do you guys recommend? I'm guessing full synth if rite but what weight and brand. I've heard negitive stuff about m1 full synth. Point me to the good stuff. Running 20g turbo.

How much do you want to spend?

Renewable Lubricants Inc. Bio-Synthetic HD 5W-40 was custom blended for an Audi RS4 owner and was made available for sale to the public.

Motul 300V and Red Line are very good oils. 300V is pretty much double the price of Red Line. RLI, RL, and Motul 300V all contain ester base stocks.
An Overview of Esters in Synthetic Lubricants.

Shell Rotella 5W-40 is a good bang for the buck oil. A tribologist that posts at bobistheoilguy.com recently said:
Quote:
I think the current Shell Rotella "T" line of blends are the current sleeper oils when it comes to cost/performance.
What I wouldn't use is anything with a GF-4/Energy Conserving seal. These oils are geared toward fuel economy and are not necessarily a good match in a modified (or even stock) Subaru turbo IMO.

If you want to run a 30 grade, go with one that is robust. Red Line, Syntec 0W-30 (aka German Castrol/GC), Motul 300v or X-Lite 8100, or Mobil1 High mileage 10W-30 (not all Mobil1's are bad).

It's good that you ask the question now, instead of like some people that are here for years and wonder why they're having oil consumption issues in a Stage 4 STI running Energy Conserving 5W-30 in the desert.

There really isn't any best oil, but many of us are having great results with Shell Rotella T Full Synthetic 5w40.

If you are changing your oil every 3000 or like every 3 months, you are wasting your money with synthetic. But our cars like thicker oils, like GC 0W-30, and rotella xW-40, just to name a couple

What's the best oil to use?

Ah, the million dollar question. We are an independent lab, so we don't make recommendations. It has been our experience that oil is oil, and either petroleum or synthetic-based oil will work well for just about any engine.

Come on, you're holding out on me. I should use synthetic, right?

Buddy, you should use whatever you want. Synthetic oil won't guarantee a longer engine life any more than my eating organic food will guarantee I'll live until I'm 90. We here at Blackstone generally use regular petroleum-based oil because honestly, it works just as well for us.

How many at Blackstone run conventional oil in a WRX with a 20G turbo?

QS Full Synth is essentially the same as Rotella T. Same base, just slightly different additives. Made by the same company.

I would rather see a 5W 30. In fact, I really like the 5W 40 weight. If you can find that in another brand than rotela, then you dont have to go rotella. Or go rotella. Whatever.

I just dont like a 10W in an oem motor modern car.

I wouldn't run QS 10W-30 over 3k miles. See my comments about GF-4. What viscosity is the triple protection?

edit: Oh, I see that Triple Protection is 15W-40. Should be fine as long as you don't do short trips, but will be harder to start in the winter.

Sure it is. Not sure that I would trust the advice of a company making a blanket statement regardless of application, as well as encouraging people to extend oil change intervals when an oil shears to a 20 grade in a Subaru turbo.

Ok... Now I'm the third owner of this wrx 1st was seinor owned, 2nd was owned by some one for no more that 4000 miles and I guess he did one full synth oil Change but can't remember what kind. So if I were to change the oil with rotella, am I going to encounter any issues from all the diff oils that have been run thru this motor?

+1 for Rotella, best oil for the money (and easier to find than german castrol)

I ran Royal Purple until it went to $8.50 a quart, then I tried German Castrol but that is a PITA to find, Rotella is at Wallyworld, so it is cheap and easy to find.
