Default HELP!!! what is the difference between JDM rear diff and USDM?

'03 WRX

I was told that I have a JDM rear that has been WELDED up for drag use....

I want to put a KAAZ unit in this so I can keep from breaking axles when I drive it on the street.....

What are the differences between JDM and USDM rear diffs???

Is the JDM one a R180??? like an STI over here???

I really just need to know how to I.D. an R160 versus an R180 rear diff....

Cover pattern? part numbers or what???

Thanks!
RYNO

The USDM WRX diff the r160 is only 6 inches across while the larger Sti diff the r180 is 7 inches across. This is the best way to tell what you have.

You might want to take the cover off and look at the ratio...it should be stamped but you may have to count the teeth. Even if you find out it's an r180, or r160 you'll want to know what ratio it is to see if it'll work with your car.

Thanks so much for the info, Both of yous guys!!!!

Now on saying the "diff" is 6inches across.....

Do you mean the actual 3rd member "pumpkin" differential that the ring gear mounts to?

or are you talking about the width of the outside of the case of the whole "differential", like the inner CV axle to CV axle width....

Thanks!!!!
