Default Trouble/Warranty Denial Report Thread: Braking System

I had a discussion with Nick a few weeks back, and in an effort to consolidate the troubles people are having with their cars, which will in turn make the issues more apparent and/or harder to ignore (not to mention making this forum neater ) we decided to make sticky threads where people can report their troubles and/or denied warranty stories by problem area, much akin to my http://www.deniedmywarranty.org website, only with a much larger audience. SOA knows about I-Club.com and Deniedmywarranty.org, but the lack of coordination of trouble reports here on I-club (of course it's going to happen... a 'net forum is a stream-of-consciousness kind of thing) and the lack of the sheer number of them on the Deniedmywarranty.org site makes the actual impact far less than what it could be. We decided to utilize these stickied threads to organize and emphasize what is going wrong. I want to emphasize that these threads are not solely for Impreza WRX owners, nor just Impreza owners. We want to hear from everyone in these threads who is having issues. You can use these stickied threads to report warranty denials or simply to say that something's broken that you didn't submit for warranty repair. To keep these threads neat, there will be a standard format used, as found below (I will place an example reply below this post):

Name:

Make:

Mileage:

Time Out Of Use:

Problem And Likely Cause:

Modifications:

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No):

Reason Given For Denial:

Your Story:

Replies deviating from this format will be deleted, no questions asked... sorry, but this has to remain neat and easy to read to be effective. In addition, please do not use this as a chance to bitch about a dealership or SOA- keep it professional and to-the-point, and this will help us all out in the long run .

Default WRX ABS Defective

Name: Sherman A. Johnson

Make: 2002 Impreza WRX

Mileage: Approx. 21,000 and 29,000

Time Out Of Use: N/A at this time

Problem and Likely Cause: ABS seems to be over-sensitive. It activates on smooth dry pavement and the brake pedal goes to the floor. Braking force is dramatically reduced. The cause is a mystery to me.

Modifications: Firestone SZ-50 tires (stock size). Hawk HP Plus pads with stock rotors. First instance was with Bridgestone RE 730's and stock brakes.

Submitted for Warranty Work: Yes.

Reason for Denial: No TSB from SOA. Problem hard to duplicate.

Your Story: I have driven cars with ABS since 1993. The first chance I got I began to test it's operation and limitations. I have activated it numerous times on wet/sandy/snow covered and icy roads. I am very familiar with how it should work. In my experience, the pedal stays firm, at about the usual distance off the floor but there is the vibrating sensation.

With the WRX, I have felt the typical vibration, but the pedal sinks almost all the way to the floor. In addition, in both instances I mentioned, I was on DRY pavement--no sand, leaves, etc. I hit the brakes hard in both instances, lifted, and then hit them hard again. The ABS activated both times upon the second application of the brakes. Normally it is next to impossible to activate the ABS (in my experience) with high performance tires on a smooth dry road. IF a driver were able to do so (and I have a couple times) the deceleration rate should stay about the same. At least that has been my experience with my previous vehicles, in particular a '93 NX 2000 with stock ABS brakes and Dunlop SP 8000 tires.

Bottom line: Based on fairly extensive experience (relative to the average driver) this layman's opinion is that there is something seriously wrong with the ABS on my WRX sedan. At this point I'm considering pulling the ABS fuse, at least until our first winter storm. I honestly believe the brakes would be safer with the ABS disabled.

Your Story: exact same as sajohnson; bumpy road - no brakes. I have pulled the ABS fuse about 3000 miles ago, I can't live with it anymore. I had a regional rep test drive my car, he felt it but never followed up with SOA. Happens with stock tires or my 17" S-02s. Never had this problem with my 2000 RS.

Problem And Likely Cause: Sinking brake pedal / fluttering brake pedal

Modifications: none

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: 1st, brakes operating as designed, 2nd, brakes still working as designed, cause = brake booster loosing pressure under deceleration

Your Story:

My problem sounds almost identical to sajohnson's prob. Under normal braking conditions (not hard braking) the pedal falls about .5 to 1.0 inches towards the floor. Brake pressure seems fairly constant. Under hard braking its solid until the car slows significantly. This started at about 20,000 miles right after I had a flat and used the spare donut to get to a tire place to patch the tire.

I took it to Big Valley Dodge/Subaru in Van Nuys. Had them check it during an oil change and they said it was working fine. Went back a second time 2000 miles later and went for a drive with a service technician. They charged me about $50 for a full brake inspection and said it was fine.

Recently, I took the car to an independent service place (Suby Specialties in Monrovia). Without even saying a word about the brakes they took it for a road test and said something was very wrong with the brakes.

Today I took it to Mazda/Subaru of Thousand Oaks. Within about 20 minutes they reported that the ABS module was probably bad. They mentioned there was a bulletin on this problem for owners who drove more than 3 miles on the spare tire. Apparently, it has the ability to "burn the ABS module". This doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but they are ordering a new ABS module for replacement under warranty.

Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks!

As for your problem, I would have to say that the failure was due to the breakdown of the rubber brake hose, not the caliper. This is becoming a very common problem on ALL makes of vehicles. The rubber is just substandard and decays from the inside out. Once it starts to collapse, you hit the brakes, brakes clinch, but the collapsed hose doesn't bleed pressure off eventually wearing rotor and all out. I have seen this on my Talon, Tina's Cherokee, my CJ, my mothers Acura, my father's Dodge Ram, etc. My good friend runs a Big-O tire store and he said that it is VERY common in his business.

Normal wear & tear my arse!

Just FYI,

Submitted for Warranty Work: Yes.

Reason for Denial: No TSB from SOA. Problem hard to duplicate.

Story: I just wanted to clarify and update my post (above).

First of all, there seem to be two DIFFERENT ABS problems. The first, and most common, is early ABS activation on rough or uneven surfaces (railroad crossings, etc) and a resultant loss of braking force. While I have noticed that the ABS seems over-sensitive, I have not noticed a significant reduction in braking ability when it activates. With my WRX, it is possible to activate the ABS on almost any rough surface, but the pedal does not drop and the brakes still work.

There does seem to be an initial period of <1 sec. where the braking force is reduced but then the ABS seems to get itself sorted out. The pedal stays firm, with the typical ABS vibration.

Second, and less common, is the problem I had twice (and reported above). I experienced the same loss of braking force, but in both instances I was on SMOOTH, EVEN pavement. In both cases a driver cut in front of me (for no apparent reason) without warning (no signal) travelling at a much slower speed. In both instances I braked hard initially (with no problem) then let up on the pedal and braked hard again. In both instances it was on this _second_ application of the brakes that they essentially FAILED! I had just a fraction (maybe 1/4 - 1/3) of the normal decelleration. Luckily, in both cases I had somewhere to go (the shoulder or an empty lane).

Also, I've posted this elsewhere, but after the second instance of "mysterious brake force reduction" I bled my brakes and found a significant amount of air (not litttle bubbles, but LONG sections of the clear bleeder hose filled with air!) in the line when I was bleeding the right front! Up to that point, the brakes had not been touched (I got the car straight of the truck with 6 miles on it).

I now have over 45,000 miles and the problem has not reoccured. Of course, it was so intermittent to begin with that I don't really know if bleeding the brakes fixed the problem.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else finds air in the system when bleeding the brakes for the first time.

Finally, it was noted above, but it really is important that unresolved safety-related problems get reported to the NHTSA. Not only to help others, but to help ourselves as well. That may be the only way these ABS problems will get resolved.

Well I'm sure my problem is just like the over sensitive ABS you guys are reporting. My wife got a flat tire yesterday and our friend but the spare on for her. Today I plugged the tire and rebalanced it and put it back on in place of the spare. On my way home I expirience the ABS kicking in, half kickin in, hard pedal, sinking pedal, normal and intermittent goofyness. Anyway, I'll report what the dealer says next week...if they give us a reasonably close appointment day.

If they screw us around much its Toyota time. My brakes are unsafe!

Reason Given For Denial: Still waiting on determination

Your Story: In stop and go traffic on Ventura Freeway near Tarzana exit (the freeway is 'rain grooved' and a bit rough!) on 06/16/2003, my wife was driving the WRX following me (I was pulling our trailer with my 00 2.5RS), traffic came to a sudden stop while we were traveling at 25 to 30 mph...she had a good three to four car lengths between us but when she applied the brakes the right front 'felt' like it broke loose, the ABS kicked in, the pedal sank to the floor and the braking was severely reduced...consequently she rolled into the back of the trailer at an estimated 5 to 7 mph doing in excess of $5K damage to the WRX! No one was injured but scared the 'crap' out of my wife! Big Valley Subaru's body shop is finishing the repair work and sending the WRX to their service dept to evaluate the braking system including the ABS! This happened once before but we were not aware of an issue with the ABS and we wrote it off as 'road conditions'. My wife also noted that the ABS was very sensitive when we bought the WRX (right off the truck with 8 miles on it!) but after about a month the sensitivity diminished. It returned after warranty work to the clutch M/S cylinders in May and we believe it caused the accident on 06/16/2003 as well as the previous issue we thought was 'road conditions'

Update, ABS got so frequent I pulled the fuse so it would stop. Waited one week for appointment.
Apparently it is common for the ABS to go hay-wire if anyone ever gets a right rear flat in a WRX. Maine Mall Motors/ Berlin City Subaru diagnosed and fixed/replaced the ABS hydrolic pump. Profesional work by the tech at Berlin City, So. Portland, Maine.

edit; So I guess I didn't need to post at all in this thread

Time out of service: 3 weeks
N/Acause: Brakes Failed

Submitted for warranty: no I've been trying to get it dialed in so I can dupicate it everytime so there is no question that there's a problem
My Story: I had my car in for an oil change and they performed my 7500 mile check up also. 4 hours later I first noticed the problem getting off the interstate and applied the brakes to slow down on dry smooth pavement and didn't slow down at all until I released and reapplied them. 3 days later tried to slow down for the turn to my apartment complex and they failed again causing me to go through the intersection over the curb and through the apartment sign. Causing damage to my car luckily not to me. I had pressure at the pedal in both instances but the brakes did not slow the car down at all
I contacted my dealership, Morrie's subaru in Brooklyn Park, MN and they acted like they didn't care at all about the problem because I have to prove they didn't work. My insurance towed the vehicle to a repair shop to be fixed and inspected. I should know more come Monday or Tuesday. I will keep you all informed. But the problems I read about in the 02's seems to continue on!!!
I am having the same problem with getting it to act up for dealer but I am getting it to act up more and more at about 20-30 mph hit the brakes as i hit a good bump and of course the brakes don't work abs kicks on but doesn't slow the car. It almost feels like it is just pushing air through everything.

Legacy SOA is evil

Name: Z Brown

Make: Subaru Legacy GT Limited 2001

Mileage: 39500

Time Out Of Use: 0, I need my car

Problem And Likely Cause: Squeaking noise from right front wheel and vibration at highway speeds.

Modifications: SPOmotorsports intake, Borla Headers, Brospeed Exhaust, SS brake lines, custom sound system, front and rear strut bars, Bridgestone Turanza LS-H

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: SOA rep claims that the mechanic determined this part tampered with...read the story...

Your Story: During normal driving for me, I began to notice an intermittent squeal and unsercure sound from the front tire. Like any concerned enthusiast would do i took it to the dealer since i did not know the severity of it. At highway speeds, vibration could be felt as well as a pull. I found this strange especially since I had an alignment done less than 3000 earlier. I take it to a Subaru dealer ( Casey Subaru, Newport News, VA) and the mechanic takes my car while I talk to the service rep. After about 12 minutes, the mechanic brings my work order back and briefs the rep. They claimed that my entire Hub bearings and Wheel assembly would have to be replaced. How in the heck does a factory sealed hub need to be replaced at 35k? The charge was somewhere in the area of $811 parts and labor. I asked why and the mechanic said that the hub had been tampered with. I found this difficult to believe since the only thing ever done to the wheels were a tire change and the installation of the brakeline which never had anything to do with the assembly. They refused to service it under warranty and said my car wasn't safe to drive...Of course SOA wanted vehicle records and gave an indication that they were taking the mechanics word over mine.

Resolution: Although many don't get this result, please understand that I'm no idiot. I took my car back to the service station that installed my tires in order to receive my tire rotation since It was under Service agreement. The squeaking curtailed slightly and the vibration was lessened. IT was still a problem so I took it to Sears where I got my alignment done. The mechanic there was helpful and carefully took the wheel off the car under my supervision. He then took the wheel off to examine the "damage." He immediately grabbed a large socket that fit the hub and tightened it. He then took a ball pinned hammer and banged a metal piece that the Subaru mechanic said was installed improperly down. PROBLEM SOLVED. I never take a NO less than three times when It comes to my car or anlything I buy. And to think they tried to hit me for $811 before a 60k service.

Default please keep me informed of the abs problem

Does it happen only when donut tire is put on? It shouldnt matter what happens when the car is out of warranty and the abs fails. If this is an ongoing problem they should honor it. I got 6600 miles on my car and its a year and half old. i had to break hard the other day and the abs came on and i could hear it. But havent had any problems with it coming on prematurely yet. Let me know what happens

The abs kicked in, the brake pedal went to the floor causing a severe loss of braking power. The collision caused over 4k in damage to my car. I went back to the dealer where I bought the car, but they are claiming there is nothing wrong with the ABS.

Problem And Likely Cause: blown turbo/ pre turbo cat- trans ratlling and clutch chatter.

Modifications: tbe

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: said turbo was fine and noise was normal. others they could not duplicate.

story. I was on my way home from work when my friend behind me noticed blue smoke out my exhaust and i could hear a huge difference in the way my turbo sounded and acted. When i go to work in the morning when it's cold i get clutch chatter and when i decelerate in 1st or 2nd you can here all sorts of rattling from my trans. I took my car to subaru and they said there was nothing worng with it. of course you wont get clutch chatter when the cars is warm and it is 90 out side and they told me all the noises were nomal even after we rode in another stock wrx. I knew there was something wrong and I wanted a vf22 and other stuff anyways. I installed an uppipe and had the turbo off and alot of the precat was broken away and there was oil in my intercooler and the exhaust wheel had nicks in it. O-well at least i have a vf22 with deadbolt port and polish.

Problem And Likely Cause: ABS came on unexpectedly in conditions where it should not have - traveling aroud 30mph. Peddle dropped about an inch, braking was seriously diminished - felt like they were gone. Not sure on cause.

Modifications: Only difference from stock are the Toyo Proxes 4 tires - about 2,500 miles on them.

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): No.

Reason Given For Denial: N/A

Your Story: ABS came on - braking power was basically gone. This was particularly bad because I was going towards a red light and went I expected to begin braking, the brakes felt like they suddenly did not work. I let up on the brakes and tried again, and they worked. This has happened before (railroad tracks, metal grating in roadway), but never as I as headed towards the back of a car. In the right conditions, this could easily cause someone to rear end somebody or worse, run over someone in a crosswalk.

Problem And Likely Cause: Brakes not functioning severe pitting on rotors!

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Denied replacing rotors instead they resurfaced all 4 rotors.

Your Story: Having trouble with it stopping especially after a rain or snow more so than normal. Brought car in to Subbie dealer and told rotors were pitted pretty bad. Also they had said pads looked like new and no evidence of anything wrong on my part. Warranty still in effect as I only had 6408 miles and asked to have new rotors being that this is a performance car and the rotors are pretty expensive. They would not do it and resurfaced them instead. I was upset being that the car is like new and the resurfacing will dimish there overall performance and most of all there life. I think there is a clear defect in the product and wished they would have replaced them.
