This is how I did it as well. You can get lucky fishing the wire through, but if you don't, removing the glove box makes a huge difference.

Also...
If any of you have any stereo wiring experience, using a feeder line will be of some use. I cut a coat hanger, tied some very durable string and fed it through the central hole... Afterward, tied the string to the plug and pulled it gently through. Easy and efficient. |

I want to do this to my car.
Can the OEM work for me, or should I just get some LED strips and a switch? |

The OEM one should work, but you may have to cut the plugs and splice them in. So it might be more cost effective to buy some LED strips and do it all yourself.

What do people usually wire it into?

I fingered my Suby
Hey guys, first post on here... Just thought I'd throw in my 3 cents.
First of all get someone with small hands if you can... As mentioned before a flashlight is pretty much necessary. Also mentioned was the passenger side is backwards - drove me nuts at first! The best way I found was to get your head down under the dash and shine the light up towards the back of that middle cubby hole for the mid console light. While doing this I stuck a finger thru that hole (you nasty) and got a good idea of where the hell I needed to feed the wire from that point. At 1st I was blindly trying to just feed the wire harness over to each side but it would get caught in all sorts of tight spots, but once I found my finger I could get a good idea of where to point when routing the wires in! Off topic but if anyone knows where the hell I can find a new gasket for the SPT exhaust, please let me know! Subaru tells me they don't even have a part # for it??? I'll probably post a new thread for this anyway... |

Wondering.
I installed the blue subaru kit on my car and the LEDs are different colours, the driver's side is a turquoise blue and the passengers side is the nice blue that you see in the posts and in the subaru brochure for this accessory. Anyone else have this happen? |

I have an idea: What if you could make these expandable and have a unit light up the rears? You know, mount them at the bottom of your seats?
I don't know if anyone posted that yet? |

It's interior. Plus my windows are tinted so you couldn't see it in the day or night anyways hardly. I understand ricer underglow being illegal. |

But, I don't think it's illegal. Some interior lights can be considered a driver distraction, but these lights are OEM and very dim. |

Its against the law somewhat. I believe, if my memory serves me right, you cant have any visible blue light shining out of the car thats noticeable, because its considered a distraction to other drivers.
A neighbor of mine told me this who is a police officer. Because i use to have a blue string light around my dash in my old saturn(yes i was kinda ricer) and he told me i could get a ticket for that if i wasn't careful. So i just turned them off while driving, better safe than sorry. But for my wrx since I liked the footwell in my old saturn. I just went to advance auto and got the $20 Blue Led strip. Hook it up to the center blue light in the dash so they come on when the lights come on. It was simple. No more than 30minutes to install. Just make sure you hook them up right if you want it to dim with the rest of the lights. |

So today I was bored and picked up a LED footwell light kit from pepboys for about $12. I tried wiring the passenger side light into the glove box light and it immediately went out along with the cubby hole light. I assume it blew the fuse? This is a 2010 WRX btw. I know the subaru footwell light kit wires in with the cubby hole light so any idea why this would cause the fuse to blow? thanks. And also anyone know where the fuse is located and what kind to replace it?

Most diodes are made for 0.7V to 3V forward bias (shown as Vd in the image) which is why a resistor is always required when using an LED. Trying to put 12V across a 1.5V LED is exactly the same thing as shorting the circuit since the current is able to go to infinity. Which one did you do? Regular short, or short through the diode? |

GROUND-------/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/------(12V - Vd)-------|<|-----------12V -------------R=(12V-Vd)/Id ------------------------Vd-------------- So, maybe R would be a 220 Ohm resistor if Vd = 1V and Id = 50mA. |

I just got a 2011 OBS and was wondering where the best place to get the illum kit and the cubby light (both red)?
I've found a few places online, but they don't list 2011 model year specifically. I figured they'd work, but I don't want to chance it. |

I was wondering the same but for a 2011 Impreza2.5i, also is taking out the cubby hole LED as simple as popping it off with a flathead screwdriver? I also found it weird how to the right of the LED in the cubbyhole there is a hole with some type of metal knob just hanging out there. Does anyone know what this is for? Thanks in advance!

Great thread. Thanks everyone for the info and pics.
As for being illegal...my ex had a 3-series BMW (I think it was a 2004) and it had a red interior lighting that was always on. It was subtle but it lit up the footwells as well as the center console area. Way brighter than the Subaru one though. But since you can buy and have the dealer install this kit before you even take the keys and ownership, I don't see how this can be illegal. I think that's why it's so dim and subtle. |
