Default I just bought an '08 Sti, hello to all. Hopefully you can help...

So...here's my story.

I'm just bought a 2008 DGM Sti on Tuesday....and now 373 miles later it sits in the dealer parking lot leaking oil....lots of oil.

I took it in to get the windows tinted and clearbra installed, and when I returned the shop noticed an oil leak from under the car. Checked the dipstick...it was dry. DRY!

I called the dealership and they said to top it off, noting how much it took before it showed on the dipstick, and to bring it in. I filled up the oil, and it took about 3 quarts before it showed, and nearly 4 to top it off. As far as I can find the Sti only holds 4.2 qts.....yikes.

Needless to say I'm upset, but has anyone heard of this happening? I just spent about $800 on full clearbra and window tint, and just detailed it to get all the swirls out of it.

Bummer of way to introduce myself to the forums....but so goes life I guess. FWIW, I've owned primarily Audis and older BMWs, this is my first new car. I'm hoping Subaru dealers are equal, or better than the Audi dealers I've dealt with.

Good morning! ( I guess)

Mike

WOW sorry to hear that, and no thats not a common issue. What dealer are you going through? Some are good others not so much. They will get ya fixed up I am sure either way. Its when you start moding that they get ugly. If the oil was that low more than likely it was a badly leaking drain plug but till I could see it hard tellin..

Congrates on the new car.

Default I'm figuring either bad drain plug, or a bad seal on the filter...

The big concern I have is potential damage w/such a low oil level. I bought it through Roy Robinson in Marysville, so the big test now is how are they going to handle this.

Default the '08 body style is what pulled me to the Sti...oh and the 0% smokin deal etc.

They really want to move these things.

Default Good call, thanks. How is SOA's reputation for making bad things right?

Audi of America has mixed reviews...but I can't seen any dealer or brand letting something like this get handled incorrectly.

Do not take that car back without a new engine. The likelihood of engine damage is significant, and you will be plagued with issues if you do take it back as is. Either make them give you a new car, a new engine, or your money back.

I'd say because your car is new and unmodded you will have no problems getting it resolved quickly. They should treat you well (I'd hope!).

I second this, get Subaru of America aware of this right now. You need a claim warranty claim number set up now. And don't settle for anything less than a new engine. Low oil and no break in is a bad combo.

Thanks for all the replies.

Here is how it sits, I just got back from the dship and it was a loose drain plug from the factory. A Loose drainplug! Nice Quality Control.

Anyways, bright and early Monday morning I will contacting Subaru of America, and start the proceedings. I want a new car, this one is tainted now. "Oh, hi....yea it's as good as new, the engine was replaced at 373 miles b/c the oil ran out...but it's just as good as new." Yea right, what else was installed by the machine/person who tightened this drain plug?....or inspected this drain plug?

I didn't spend 30 grand on a car that was obviously built on a Monday.

Subaru of America....the ball is in your court.

Yeah, I'd walk out with nothing less than a new engine, or better yet, a new car. That's a MAJOR ball to drop, especially when the car has to be broken in.

A new engine would really be sufficient IMO. Nothing short of that, of course.

However with 373 miles on it, I'd think a new car might be in order as well.

...or maybe after 373 miles, you decided you didn't actually like the car as much as you thought, were struck with a serious case of buyer's remorse and solved your problem by ever so gently loosening the oil drain plug...

Actually, you can tell by the crush ring if it's been tightened or not

I agree, its not a new car anymore, I cringe just thinking of the thought of starting and engine after an oil change WITHOUT a prefilled oil filter (I always fill mine with oil before screwing it on ) I can only imagine running an engine like that with basically nothing in it.

That sucks to hear man, hope they work something out for you. Did you notice any oil over by the turbo? I believe there is a turbo pipe recall that subaru sent out for the '08 and '09 wrx/sti also some older LGT. All it is is a bracket and screw that secures the turbo pipe from flexing.

I agree with getting a new engine, and a new turbo. Make sure SOA knows about this and make sure you get lots of paperwork that clearly states what happened for any further complications.

DO NOT let them tell you that it is going to be alright without a new engine.

Default Good work detective, but per the dship today, the crush ring was not crushed....

I just wonder what else the last inspection missed...is a rod bolt not tight too? How about a motor mount? ..... my mind is running crazy with all the what if scenarios.

Default Per phone calls to everyplace I parked...yes. It has been dark and wet

every time I've had it at my house so I wouldn't have seen anything. But I did notice some today, now that it was nice out.
