My research pointed at the clutch being the weak point in the manual transmission on the R and not the transmission itself. Have you seen something different?

Default Next Volkswagen Golf R to get 286 horsepower?

It's the clutch.

And the shifter is meh.

I bought the dieselgeek short shifter kit but have not installed it yet.

If I were to do it again, I would get the DSG.
But even the DSG has some issues, because as much as the fanboys like to think they are in manual mode all the time, the computer can still override the choice of gear you want.
There's always a trade-off.

I've not had that issue if I put the car in Sport mode and then move it over to manual. The only time it shifts for me is when I pull to a stop, and it kicks it into lower gears.

The DieselGeek SS is a night and day difference. I spent more time adjusting it than the installation though.

That (or a better feeling shifter) and the Euro tails are, in my eyes, the only two mods that would been nice to have from the factory.

I concur, I did exactly this - DSG, JB4 (upgraded from JB1).
I probably stated this before, we are (by choice) a one car family, with one kid. My wife, bless her, can only drive auto, but the DSG does not feel like a compromise, it's a fabulous transmission for an economy car.

There's the obvious hatch versatility, which we want/need.
The JB4 adds that zing that surprises most other road users (especially the luxury brand drivers - I love that), and i've taken it to the track where it performed admirably, yet with the DCC set to comfort it soaks up the bumps of Quebec's 'impeccable' (cough) roads and is plenty comfortable on long road trips. "Ze Germans" as Turkish calls them, really know how to engineer suspension.

Previously, I was never bothered about interior finish and gizmos, but the interior is really nice for an economy car, the seats are comfy yet supportive.
The technology is great e.g. Android Auto, dynamic headlights, i've got all my home FLAC music library simply dumped on an SD card and it plays flawlessly.
Then there are the little touches like the reverse camera hidden under the rear badge that doesn't get covered in dirt or snow, the ambient lighting, that solid door clunk - never had that before, just great.

There isn't much that needs fixing with this car out of the box. Sure, I spent a bit extra for the LED tails, folding mirrors, JB module, boost/vac gauge, and I picked up a used 8" screen for the infotainment system, but that was personal choice and I got some great deals from Eastern Europe & Asia. Probably the only 'must' is a spare tyre, unless you have the faith that somehow a can of goop and a compressor can fix a destroyed sidewall.

YMMV, but for me, at this price point and maybe more (though I wasn't prepared to spend more), there is nothing new that ticks so many boxes.
The R is going to be filling my driveway for a long time.

I don't know about other parts of the continent, up here there are not many on the roads, at least I don't see them. Even after being available for nearly 2 years I get asked about the car pretty regularly from inquisitive folks when they see a Golf with 4 tailpipes or ask what the 'R' means. I met an older guy at the trailhead just yesterday who's first comment was "Belle bagnole", then proceeded to ask 20 questions about it. My wife rolls her eyes when she's driving it and some bro gives her the thumbs up or asks her about it in parking lots

Can't find a dealer to budge on price here. Seems like in Canada you can get a R for 35 all day.

I'm not sure where in NC you are, certainly around the military bases dealers are going to be idiots, but in the RDU area they should be a little more willing to deal. Worst case scenario I know two people who have bought vehicles in Virginia for a discount of no less than $3k off what the NC dealers were offering.

Anyone have any info where the US version will be built? Curious if we'll finally get a sunroof option.

It might look like a base Golf, but I wouldn't call the R an economy car.

When does the U.S. get the facelift? This fall? Also the video said 310hp is that just what the EU gets of did they bump the hp for this revision?

It's roots are an economy car, and I wouldn't call it a luxury car either. I don't know what's in between(?)

I'd call it a luxury car. It's got a luxury interior and all the mod cons one could want.

I can't disagree there. Thinking about some of the 'luxury' brands offerings that I've stuck my head in lately the R interior is comparable or even better.

I guess I like the fact that it's 'just a Golf' that punches above it's weight. I've got a couple of friends/colleagues that place so much importance on the badge when they could get so much more for their money.

I got this from coworkers as well. "Hey guys what do you think of the Golf R? $40k for a Golf, no thanks".

I would expect to see it coming from Germany still but I don't know for sure.

I think that since the S3 received a rated bump then we will see the same amount as well. I'm just curious about the 7 speed DSG and the updates for the torque split on the Haldex, like the S3 received.

I wonder if they will add the LCD in the IP like they have done for Audi and other VW models.

Heck the Mustang is getting one.
