Need help re. gear grinding since trans./diff. fluid change, info please!
OK after reading a lot of search results, I suspect synchro problems, but unsure how much will this cost me (no warranty!), and how long (hours/days?) will it take to fix, and where to go (dealership, specialty shop?). I've been so busy with work and haven't had a chance to attend to my ride ever since the South Coast Subaru party. My car is 2000 2.5RS Impreza with 74,XXX miles. Any input is appreciated. Please see details below.....
It has been one week since I had tranny and differential fluid change at a local Subaru dealership. The 2000 2.5RS has been driving fine and shifting normally until after I had the fluid change. Ever since then, ALMOST every time I shift from Neutral to 1st on a dead stop, it kinda jerks the lever and clunks. Also, from 3rd to 4th gear transition at 4k rpm it slips and grinds often. Again, these problems started shortly after my gear oil change. Is this a coincidence, or did the fluids change have something to do with my shifting problems? ALSO by the way, my car is 74,XXX miles old, so the clutch still feels normal but unsure if it is wearing out, based on my symptoms. I no longer have warranty, so if something major needs to be done, I'm concerned about the costs...I'm still a starving student. Let me know if you know, please. Thanks! --Long

Did you talk to the shop that did the fluid? Have you looked to see if there is even fluid in there? Replacing the syncros is not cheap or easy... It would be easyer to find another used 5 speed and just swap that in places of yours. If yours is realy done for.

Share the tips with the rest of us Kian My car has always made noises ever since I went to redline shock proof. Dead stop, put it into first *cluck* noise. Only time I hear it and it's random too. |

Did you have them put in anything but the correct stock tranny fluid? If its not stock fluid and you are having grinding noises, switch back to stock immediatly and you might be able to get the problem to go away (mostly). Do not let it grind or wear the synchros for very long or you will need a new/rebuilt tranny. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the feedback. Thanks Kian for your offer to help, I'll keep in mind. I haven't had a chance to go under and look at my car since, but as far as I know, the dealership used whatever stock fluids they normally would use in a tranny & diff. fluid change service. Didn't get anything else done on the car lately either. If there's any more info y'all can give me, please let me know. It's been a pain in recent months...spending $$$ I don't make on replacing my bumper and all brake rotors and pads from wear and tear driving on side streets to an unpaid internship.

Best advice is to check your tranny fluid. Do you have any. If not, GO BACK TO THE STEALERSHIP SERVICE DAPARTMENT. If you do, bring it back anyway, and tell them what is goin on. I say if all was fine before, and after your fluid were done at the Dealership it aint all fine, they effed something up. Michael |
