Default Ano-WRX-ic Build: Fully Caged and 6 Spd 09 Hatch - 2,713# and Still Going

I've held off on doing a build thread but for some reason here I go:

2009 WRX, bought it brand new back in February 2009 when I lived in SLC

Feels forever ago:



It stayed stock for a while but once my wife heard another subaru that had been modified and said, "you're right, your car does need an exhaust", it was on!

I'm going to keep this thread to the point. It's gone through a few stages in terms of parts and fuel used due to my changing locations throughout the years, but I now have a final goal in mind and a final configuration mostly decided on. This will still take a few years to complete because I'm busy and working on cars isn't my top priority.

The car is currently mostly gutted and maxxed out on E85 with he stock block and turbo. I figure it's making 330-350 at the wheels but I've never done more than virtual dyno while tuning on the road. Weight of the car with half a tank of gas was 2,799# before I swapped the six speed and R180 this year (did CF drive shaft and KillerB header at same time) so I figure the net was about 65-75# added so I'm probably around 2,875#.

Unfortunately I'm from MI and from a big Ford family so drag racing is what we do, so this car is being built with that in mind. Completely wrong car to build with drag racing in mind but oh well.

I do all my own stunts, so nobody else has ever touched this car. I had it road tuned by Tank in Omaha, but I'm starting to dabble with the tuning myself so I'll be doing all future tuning.

If I can get the CF doors I should be able to get the car into the 2,300 pound range but that's definitely the stretch goal. 2,500 range is the current realistic goal.

I tend to knock out major projects every winter/early spring to have the car ready for the driving season. 2019 is cage and interior. 2020 & 2021 will be either brakes/wheels/suspension/subframes or CF doors/hatch/lexan. Not sure what order there but I need to convince Mr. Marsh to make CF doors for the GR. 2022 will be more power.

Back from the track, best run was 12.25 at 111. Cut a 1.67 60' so the trans has been tested and passed with flying colors.

I hope. I feel like the car should already be there with how much weight has come out of it. Probably need to take a look at it to make sure it's running right, only 17 psi in first and second gear. Also ended up throwing p0031 and p0037 on my last run for low input on both O2 sensors so I'm running rich. It wasn't until after the last run that the car showed signs of it, currently running around 13.0 at idle, which is weird. Maybe I popped a line, or trashed a sensor, or finally broke the engine. In that case I guess I'll need to get on that block I have with just this in mind.

Figured it out.... pulled one of the 15a fuses under the glove box and it was blown. Went under the car and found the rear O2 had been pinched between the trans and trans cross member, shorting it out. I can probably just completely remove the rear o2 and defeat the codes rather than fix it.

Why did it get pinched? Well I managed to pull the bolts through the cross member, losing my rear bushing in the process.

TSS Fab trans cross member is on the way. Tubular+one piece = should never fail again. Also saves about half the weight of the OEM. 7-8 lbs?

that's some good driving there, good job.
trap is a bit low for FBO+e85, possibly really conservative tune
I don't think you can completely defeat the rear o2 heater circuit code, at least not IIRC.
Also you'd have to make tune adjustments since the car uses the rear o2 to help the primary o2 command fueling

Fixed my spot welds.....

F*#k that sucked



New trans cross member will be here Thursday... Not sure if I'll have much time to work on it for the next couple weeks but we'll see.

Since the dash is out I've decided to clean up some of my hack-job wiring on my gauges from the early days of the car. I'm running everything through the drivers side fender into the cabin, then I'll connect everything with some Sumitomo MT connectors so they're nice and clean. Pics of that some other time, I'll be out of town for a few days.

In the mean time, got some new pistons. They should hold up to the 5,000 #/hr turbo I'm looking at.



For reference that's about 14-16" tall.

Trans cross member showed up while I was out of town. Just need to find time to put it in, but it's a hell of a nice piece in person.

Also got everything else I was waiting for to wrap up my wiring clean up so I can at least re-wire all my gauges this weekend as well if I find time. Sure would be nice to drive the car again after a three week hiatus.

He'll do it in any color you want. I was going for a deep gray/charcoal with a silver metallic to play off the color of the car. Perfect!



We'll see what the OEM piece weighs when I get it off. I figure around 14 lbs being the fully boxed in STI cradle. Probably a bit less if I still had the WRX cradle which has a bit less reinforcing.

Cradle installed. Bit of a pain. I really had to work it to get all the bolts in, but in the end everything lined up. Only thing I really had to do was take the corner off the downpipe bracket.

Yes, I know the OEM cradle is put together wrong. Just slapped it back together after I got it out.


Turns out it was 11 lbs. I'm rounding up because some parts fell off at the track. Just about 5# weight savings. Here's to more with the rear subframe and front cross member.





Where the DP hanger had to be cut



Only real gripe, the rear mounting plates are a bit too big for the GR chassis. They obviously bent to shape when I torqued it, but a bit smaller plate would be ideal for the GR (this is technically made for pre 08's).



And how I'm running the wiring for my gauges. Just need to add some sleeving and zip tie it nice and neat along the cowl.



Down inside the fender. This will all be covered up once the liner goes back in.



And inside. Pops out right behind the fuse panel. I have some add-a-circuit deals to tap into the box. With everything I've pulled out of the car I have no shortage of fuses to tap.

Got the car back together but she's running real rich and throwing the P0172 code (running rich - thanks captain obvious).

Thinking it's just the rear O2 since it holds stoich while warming up then goes rich once it's past the warm up tables. Car runs fine in OL, just pig rich in CL. New O2 on the way to see if that'll fix it.

In the mean time I'll see if I have any exhaust leaks anywhere, clean the MAF, and maybe test the fpr.... Actually have a spare in my basement if it went bad. I'm guessing worst case it's a suck injector but the warm up tells me once the car starts using the O2's and not the warm up tables one of them is hosed (and most likely the one I spliced back together after thoroughly trashing it lol).

OK so way long overdue for an update.

Fixed the rear O2 and car doesn't run rich anymore, but now she's running lean in OL.... My thinking is I fixed a small vacuum leak when I was re-routing some lines in the engine bay. The leak may have been there for a long time and was tuned out, so fixing the leak the car now no longer loses a bit of air under boost and is running lean.

I'm going to try re-scaling the MAF, which was delayed becuase my battery died last week and I had to replace it.... But lost weight in the process.

EXT-14 AGM, 220CCA and weighs 11 lbs versus 34. I really wanted to try a lithium battery but they're still too iffy for my liking. Maybe for the next battery.



I just need to get a new die to re-thread the tie down J-hook and I should be fine. I'll probably do that this weekend, then maybe next week get around to re-scaling the MAF to see if that fixes my problem. If not, she's being put into storage mode for the winter and I'll think about dealing with it in the spring.

Battery is in, and also knocked out a blank plate for the hole left behind when I took out the radio, and found a plug that worked for the hole in the roof from the removal of the antenna.



Bought a small sheet of lexan, cut to size, sprayed with wrinkle spray paint and she fit just fine.



Found furniture foot plugs that perfectly fit the hole in the roof.





And the completed battery. I was able to retain all the OEM hardware and it's rock solid.

Got the car sorted. I had to do some work on my tune but it looks pretty dialed in now.

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and about 65* by the time the track opens. Should be my best shot at hitting 11's so far.

Not much of an interior anymore. Front seats haven't been touched too much but it's pretty spartan behind them.









Wipers were good for a solid 15-20# too. For a car that only sees sunshine it was an easy grab.





Hood was good for 25 or so



I'd like to see the car in the low 2700# range when it's in it's final configuration with a cage. Figure 40-50# from drag brakes, 30-40 from lightweight seats like a Tillet/Status/Kirkey, 20ish from the new wheel setup, then once it's caged pull all airbags and remaining trim/carpet/sound deadening/gut doors. Probably go after the wiring harness and trim all the unused junk off it too.

Then when I'm "done" and get bored of doing nothing I'll probably go lexan where it makes sense and cf roof. Basically I'm to the point where weight savings starts to cost money, but I'm never getting rid of this car so I don't care. Figure once this one is done I'll get a Z06 for my cush fun car.

2018 Update: No changes to the car this year and I didn't make it to the track because work has been too damn busy. I did get to enjoy driving it around with the kids and wife though (one at a time of course). Only clocked 800ish miles this year.

2019 Update: I just put a deposit down to secure a slot in April to get the cage installed. In talks with a company that makes CF parts, and they happen to be working on a CF skin for the GR hatchbacks. I'll be purchasing that come January/February. Tillet B6 seats for both driver and passenger with harnesses.

The car is in fully gutted mode now. Remainder of interior is on its way out, and the dash will be next. I'm planning to remove the balance of the HVAC... I paid attention this year and I used the heat once. Adios.

So far I've pulled 50# out in the remaining interior, air bags, belts, etc. The seats weighed 92 pounds all-in. The Tillet seats are 20 combined and I'm having custom mounts made by my cage fabricator which I figure will be 10 pounds or so. Add 5-10 back for harnesses. If those numbers hold I'm down 100-10 pounds, which should easily offset the cage.

But wait! With the CF roof I should drop 15-20 pounds (removing the beams since the cage will tie the b-pillars back in). Final two airbags should be good for 5 pounds, HVAC (blower, heater, evap core) probably 20. Front doors still need the cards removed, floor insulation, and removing as much wiring as possible will add up but won't be more than 20 pounds combined I'd say. Either way, even after the cage I'm guessing I'll drop 50 pounds.

That's it for 2019 plans. 2020 I figure I'll tackle brakes, wheel/tire combo for the track, and drag spec coilovers. Maybe F/R subframes from TSS. 2021 I guess I add power.

This car may see the 2,500 pound range after all.... If I get really crazy
