2015 Almost at 100k miles, been running OTS tunes from Cobb and MAP without issue. Currently on MAP 93 tune and plan on doing valve cleaning, grimmspeed intercooler, and flexfuel now that I moved to an area with E85.

Clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing gone at 84K miles. STI stuff going in. Cost $900ish to me due to Gold Plus Warranty. I would post pics of the failed stuff but too lazy at the moment to remember how.

I thought my 2017 WRX Limited was reliable and doing well but yesterday, 11/9/19, in the freeway my engine started knocking. All stock. I drove it straight to my Subaru dealership since it was near my destination. 240XXon the odometer. I do all my service at the dealer and have the extended warranty. The service rep said I am covered by warranty. He said the engine had oil, looked clean, and I was within my service intervals so I should have no problem with the warranty.

Sorry to hear that, how many miles were on that oil? Let us know if they find anything.

I say around 5500 miles. Our Subaru service agreement is 6k intervals. I was going to schedule the next service on my service plan next week.

I should hear back on Tuesday from the service department.

Subaru ordered a new engine and the warranty work should be done in 1-2 weeks. They gave us a rental in the meantime.

2017 WRX 40k miles, no issues. Ran with MAP 93 Oct tune for a few months, currently have their intake and Stage 1+ tune with perrin turbo inlet hose and boomba bpv and haven't had any problems. DAM rarely drops and have had no serious knocks. Top engine cleaning done at 15k by the dealer, oil/filter changes every 6k and rear diff flush every 15k.

Currently at 41,600 miles in my 18. All stock, no issues or codes. Using Sunoco 93 gas, oil and filter changes done every 5-6k miles. Was using Subaru oil, then switched to Pennzoil Platinum at around 24k miles.

Just for the people who are not on Facebook. These engines are making more and more power with less and less failures in general. Fa20 can take sooooooo much more than what people thought

I wonder if there is a general "power/torque" number where the stock 6 speed goes? I have seen local 2015+ wrx push 400+ on stock trans.

Agreed. They are going to push it even further with speed density tuning now being out. This platform has come a long way.

Obviously depends on how you treat it. Upper 300s is probably starting to push it. Then again the ibr hpfp testing car made 423tq and 501 whp on stock block stock trans. Its been going like that for 6k miles iirc.

Id say that a very very very small percentage of windowed blocks were actually caused from too much power. Mostly other stuff (inexperience with direct injection, overboosting early on, fuel pressure drops, oil pressure dropping at or past redline ect...). Jr has had a few customers 400-420 hp for a while now and that's on a low reading mustang dyno.

2019 WRX with 10k miles. Not sure about horse power but I would say close to 290whp or so with the catback and e30 tune. Have had the tune for 9k miles with no issues.

Hearing this information and taking input from how my car runs I am greatly considering installing a bigger turbo and pushing 450+whp. Don't mind testing the reliability and then getting a new block if I must.

Tuner is the most important part as you start to near the fueling limitations. I'm running a socal v3+ewgs and going to be around 400whp(depends on dyno). Assuming everything goes well

I'm not planning on this route, but I'm curious ... when our little 2.0's make that kind of power, is it mostly achieved only at higher RPM's, or across the board?

In other words ... when comparing a highly tuned 2.0L 4-cyl turbo with a medium-tuned 3.0L 6-cyl turbo, both making 450hp, will the larger engine have a more usable midrange?

Finally got my car back from the dealership, Kearny Mesa Subaru in San Diego. It took awhile but most of it was waiting for all the parts. One of the rod bearings broke and caused quite a bit of damaged. They replaced a whole bunch of stuff, including the block and all the camshafts. The whole process went smooth. I didn't have to pay anything and had a rental the whole time the car was in the shop. I would buy from them again for my next Subaru and have them continue to do my service based on this experience.

One thing I noticed different is that since I first owned the car is that the engine would make a slight tapping sound when it was cold then go away when it warmed up. On this new engine I haven't noticed that sound at all. It makes me wonder if there was an issue from the beginning and hence the premature failure.

Personally I belive these engines and there reliability come down to
The driver , if you a car person who loves to keep and eye on things and always be checking the ej or the fa series can work for you ! If your more of a (just drive the car and park it ) type of person , then the naturally aspirated fa is for you , if you want anything turbo you will always have to keep and eye on things to keep it in reliable conditions !

I guess this is a good thread to put this in. For all the people who think our engine is weak JR just said this,
"Adam, i have multiple guys making in the 450-500whp range on stock motors. IMO they are "OK" there, I just don't recommend it for obvious reasons. I had Demetris WRX making over 500whp back in 2015. With all the data collected in the last 4-5yrs though I personally would run my own FA over 500whp all day."
