Default Auto Insurance Question: Please help.

Here's my situation.

The registration for my car is about to expire. The car and insurance have always been under my dad's name although I cut the check for it. I turn 25 in a few weeks and in NY, insurance gets a LOT cheaper then.

We are also about to switch insurance companies. Should I continue to buy insurance under my dad's name and save a few hundred bucks or should I change the registration to my own name, and buy my own insurance. I'm currently listed as a driver under his plan.

Here's the dilemma. I plan on finally selling my beater altima and buying an 04 rex in a few months but since I never had my own car insurance, would I be considered at a higher risk? I heard somewhere that you need to have at least 1 year of prior insurance to qualify for a good rate. I've had a clean driving record since I turned 17, with one accident at 18, which is over 6 years ago.

Would the fact that I am listed as a driver UNDER my DAD's insurance be considered as having my own insurance? I don't know whether or not I should continue paying my dad for insurance or buy my own now under my own name so that when I buy the new car, I can have a better rate. Or does it not even matter whether or not I have prior insurance? Please help. THANKS!

When I got my own first car my previous record on my parents insurance counted. If you live at home you might be better off if all the cars in the house are primarily under your Dad's name. If you don't live at home, you should definitely have everything in your own name. In any case, talk to the insurance companies directly.

You're still an insured driver. The risk factor is insuring a driver that hasn't had any insurance recently. If you're listed as a driver on your dad's policy, you're insured. That's all they'll care about.

As to whether or not you should change the registration, it's up to you. You will most likely get a better rate staying under your dad, so you have to weigh the financial side with whatever other factors are at play (eg independence).
