I work at a subaru dealership =) hence the user ID.
I didnt read through all the way but just to address the issue that when your VIN number is given the VIN is not kept in any sort of record so it can't be used against the customers. Last edited by fitzsubaru; 09-30-2008 at 07:56 AM. |

the main reason they ask for the vin is not so they can get you the exact part its to make sure you own a subaru..dont ask me why but thats what the guy told me when i asked..you give your vin and you suppose to ONLY buy parts for the madel car..guy almost didnt sell me the rs cover for where the air dam in front of the passnger side connects too on the fender wall

Are you really that naive the think that the parts dept would not want to sell you a part? They could give to ****s less about what it goes on, they just want to ensure they are giving you the correct part. No big conspiracy, no massive cover up, just making sure correct parts are sold. |

still doesn't guarantee the right parts. My wife's 2000 outback has front brakes from a 1999. The vin code didn't get me the right parts, I had to go back and play guessing games trying to find the right ones. And yes, it came from Subaru that way and we are the original owners.

Not sure how it works elsewhere, but over here, by law, any damage over 2k has to be reported. (Although a lot of people don't) |

+1 I work in parts at a Subaru dealership
I get VINs for almost EVERY part I sell I enter the VIN, get the CORRECT part number, and sell the part. The VIN then gets cleared so I can enter the next customers VIN The only time I see a VIN on file is when a service order comes through. I use it to get... you guessed it... the correct parts for the vehicle. If you really think a Subaru dealership is open to do anything but make money, you're a lunatic. Sorry for the honest truth. I have enough to do at work on any given day, (including browsing NASIOC!) |

I printed my vin # in big letters and took a picture of it and my license plate with my phone, I always have both #s with me.

I didn't feel like reading through every post to see what each person had to add, but I think Unabomber hit it pretty spot on. I work in my local Nissan dealership's parts department.
I don't use the VIN to do each and every part that is ordered, but depending on what model and production date of car (down to the month), there can be many many choices, changes, and chances of getting someone the wrong part. If there is a doubt I ask for the VIN, which tells me exactly what is needed for the given car and prompts the program we use when searching parts to eliminate all the choices that don't apply. This is not used to screw you, but to help you and make sure that you are a satisfied customer. When I'm doing a counter ticket (when someone walks in) and I ask for a VIN, it is only being used for the few minutes it takes me to find the part. It does not go on your counter ticket, it does not go into our invoicing database, it does not go into any super secret Subaru database either...it is not kept period. It is erased from the program the second I search for someone elses parts. The service department does keep your VIN in order to track what services they have done to your car in case you have problems down the road. |

i wish they did that for me.
i went to buy a bulb for my headlight & they definitely sold me the wrong one because he didnt bother asking me anything. he probably sold me a STi bulb because there was no way it wouldve fit. i had to go back the next day & get a credit because it was too late & go to autozone for the bulb instead. some people are really in that conspiracy theory. if someone wanted to find you theyd just use your cell phone. or bank card. OH NO! the secrets out. everyone burn your phones. & well, the banks are closing themselves so dont worry. |

I work for Volvo Construcion I was behind the counter to start and we REQUIRE Serial numbers (same as VIN) We arn't going to waist our time looking up a part for you just to find out it wont fit because it turns out your car wasn't built in jan06 but rather feb06 . . Not only does it cost money to bring these parts in but it also cost money to store and return them when we find out they are wrong If we get a customer rufusing to supply us with the info we need to do our job . . then we tell them to take their buisness elsewehere Seems the auotomotive world is a little more forgiving in this area as Heavy Machinery is more cut throat and dry If you want to be a big man and stand all tall refusing to supply your VIN b/c you think we are runnning some sort of conspiricy Then absolutely you're ars just got denied service Quote:

i've never had a problem with my dealer. i've ordered touch-up paint and the wrx wing through them. only thing they needed was year and color code. no vin required, piece of cake.
but its good to know that if they do ask, its only to make sure i'm getting the right part. |

Just to clear up a repeated misconception I've seen a few times on this thread. In order to reduce confusion, auto makes do not use "O" and "I"s in Vin numbers and if IIRC there are a few more.
Also, I'm ok with providing a vin, but they get so militant when I cannot is what bugs me. I put the EZ engine into my XT... I needed motor mounts, but the legacy I got the engine out of is long since crushed. Parts guy demanded my vin and after a few minutes of arguing about how I don't have the right vin, I offered up a different idea. I gave him the vin off of my 89 XT-6 and then said "Ok, now that you have "A" vin, I need motor mounts for an 03 legacy with the 3 liter" |

jeezus....
every dealer wants the vin to look up parts now...its so much easier when dealing with moronic customers who know nothing about their own car...my medium duty Isuzu truck dealer wants vin so they know ground weight abs or no abs tire size brake size etc....i dont think they are worried im going to "pimp" my 20 ft isuzu box truck

My company just tested the security of several financial services applications for the finance division of a particular (big) auto conglomerate that the dealers and end users use to service their loans, apply for loans, payoff loans, etc.... Guess what piece of personal, private, information was needed to either initiate an online account or perform password resets? DING! DING! DING! The only authorization tokens were VIN + Zipcode, or VIN + model or model/year. In some cases it was VIN + lastname So what could we do with just a VIN?
I bet if I did some digging I can find similar authorization flaws in most automakers financial service applications. So we have a online forum here, where users designate their region, and if the user is old-school enough, they have probably disclosed their real name once or twice....
