The world is in war and soldiers are dying....we complain about have to "run out to the car and get my VIN" because the dumb parts department can't just get me the part..........

WTF!!!!!!

I work at a subaru dealership =) hence the user ID.

I didnt read through all the way but just to address the issue that when your VIN number is given the VIN is not kept in any sort of record so it can't be used against the customers.

Here's the deal and quit listening to the people that think your VIN blew up the twin towers.

The VIN is a many digit number that among other things, lets the dealer know your build date. This is important because (for example) the brake pads on the 2004 WRX changed mid year. With the VIN, you will get the right brake pads. If you just walk in there with a part number you scoured off the internet (reason #1 why I no longer put part # in my FAQs), you will likely be sitting with your car on jackstands all weekend because you have the wrong part.

The VIN is also computer and/or shop required to look up ANY parts? Why? This is due to the reason above. It assures 100% that any parts given are suitable for your vehicle.

The only killer is when you do odd stuff, like say the H6 upgrade to the rear brakes. This changes your brake pads from 04 WRX to 02/03 Outback. This can and does cause some confusion with dealers. You can handle this by copying a random VIN off of eBay or using a reputable Subaru NASIOC vendor like Subie Gal, Annapolis Subaru, etc.

If you'd like to copy a random VIN off of ebay and wear your tin foil hat into the dealer, you could receive the wrong part. Will you then come here and complain?

VINs are NOT recorded at the dealership when you buy parts. Do you get that tin foil hat wearers? They have zero impact with regard to warranty work.

My VIN is JF1GG29694G803308

Feel free to post this on every internet site ever.

2) It's a hassle. Why should I wait in line, go the desk, find out I need a VIN, go back to my car, find a pen, find paper, write the VIN, Is that a zero or an O?, come back, wait in line, wait for the monkey to punch in 16 characters, and then... "We don't have that part in stock, would you like to order it?" Prepay of course.

3) It creates a data base uniquely identifying: You, your car, the part. Whether or not we are being "tracked" is only a question of semantics. No, Subaru isn't doing this because they want to get in our business. BUT, IT IS A SEARCHABLE DATABASE!

The implications aren't hard to imagine. Say vehicle X is used in a homicide. It's unregistered, but the local dealerships cough up their records. Someone transposes a "1" for an "I" and suddenly you're being investigated for murder!

Here's another one. Let's say we decide that global warming is a real threat and all cars must have all stock functioning catalytic converters. Let's say that modifying a vehicles emissions system becomes a $1000 misdemeanor with up to 90 days in jail (equivolent to driving w/o tags).
Would it be hard to imagine the local cops going through the dealership records to find who recently purchased up-pipe gaskets?

Here's what I do if a dealership asks for VIN:
* First, "Just say no." Cause a delay, ask to see the manager.

* If that doesn't work, go to a different dealer. Make it clear, that they're losing business over a damned computer program.

* Don't have another local dealer? Buy online.

* Finally, offer to supply the first 8 (or so) digits of the VIN. This is a comprimise. They can still get all the information they need, but it does not uniquely identify the person and the car.
Same here, its really cheap for companies to store all this information compared to say 10 years ago.

Are you really that naive the think that the parts dept would not want to sell you a part? They could give to ****s less about what it goes on, they just want to ensure they are giving you the correct part.

No big conspiracy, no massive cover up, just making sure correct parts are sold.

still doesn't guarantee the right parts. My wife's 2000 outback has front brakes from a 1999. The vin code didn't get me the right parts, I had to go back and play guessing games trying to find the right ones. And yes, it came from Subaru that way and we are the original owners.

I'm not sure with your area, but that isn't the case here. What if it is a private claim? So lets say John backed his car into his own garage. I doubt he is going to claim insurance, so he brings it over to his buddy Steve who owns a shop. He pays cash and everything is fixed. Everything is off the record.

Not sure how it works elsewhere, but over here, by law, any damage over 2k has to be reported. (Although a lot of people don't)

+1 I work in parts at a Subaru dealership

I get VINs for almost EVERY part I sell

I enter the VIN, get the CORRECT part number, and sell the part. The VIN then gets cleared so I can enter the next customers VIN

The only time I see a VIN on file is when a service order comes through. I use it to get... you guessed it... the correct parts for the vehicle.

If you really think a Subaru dealership is open to do anything but make money, you're a lunatic. Sorry for the honest truth. I have enough to do at work on any given day, (including browsing NASIOC!)

I didn't feel like reading through every post to see what each person had to add, but I think Unabomber hit it pretty spot on. I work in my local Nissan dealership's parts department.

I don't use the VIN to do each and every part that is ordered, but depending on what model and production date of car (down to the month), there can be many many choices, changes, and chances of getting someone the wrong part. If there is a doubt I ask for the VIN, which tells me exactly what is needed for the given car and prompts the program we use when searching parts to eliminate all the choices that don't apply. This is not used to screw you, but to help you and make sure that you are a satisfied customer.

When I'm doing a counter ticket (when someone walks in) and I ask for a VIN, it is only being used for the few minutes it takes me to find the part. It does not go on your counter ticket, it does not go into our invoicing database, it does not go into any super secret Subaru database either...it is not kept period. It is erased from the program the second I search for someone elses parts.

The service department does keep your VIN in order to track what services they have done to your car in case you have problems down the road.

i wish they did that for me.

i went to buy a bulb for my headlight & they definitely sold me the wrong one because he didnt bother asking me anything. he probably sold me a STi bulb because there was no way it wouldve fit.

i had to go back the next day & get a credit because it was too late & go to autozone for the bulb instead.

some people are really in that conspiracy theory. if someone wanted to find you theyd just use your cell phone. or bank card.

OH NO! the secrets out. everyone burn your phones. & well, the banks are closing themselves so dont worry.

Longest Statement of complete Ignorance I Have ever Read .
I work for Volvo Construcion
I was behind the counter to start and we REQUIRE Serial numbers (same as VIN)
We arn't going to waist our time looking up a part for you just to find out it wont fit because it turns out your car wasn't built in jan06 but rather feb06 . .
Not only does it cost money to bring these parts in but it also cost money to store and return them when we find out they are wrong
If we get a customer rufusing to supply us with the info we need to do our job . .
then we tell them to take their buisness elsewehere

Seems the auotomotive world is a little more forgiving in this area as Heavy Machinery is more cut throat and dry
If you want to be a big man and stand all tall refusing to supply your VIN b/c you think we are runnning some sort of conspiricy
Then absolutely you're ars just got denied service

i've never had a problem with my dealer. i've ordered touch-up paint and the wrx wing through them. only thing they needed was year and color code. no vin required, piece of cake.

but its good to know that if they do ask, its only to make sure i'm getting the right part.

You don't need to have a police report to have work done (body work at least).

Edit: Hit and Runt sounds like an energy drink of some sort, or maybe a candy.

Just to clear up a repeated misconception I've seen a few times on this thread. In order to reduce confusion, auto makes do not use "O" and "I"s in Vin numbers and if IIRC there are a few more.

Also, I'm ok with providing a vin, but they get so militant when I cannot is what bugs me. I put the EZ engine into my XT... I needed motor mounts, but the legacy I got the engine out of is long since crushed. Parts guy demanded my vin and after a few minutes of arguing about how I don't have the right vin, I offered up a different idea.

I gave him the vin off of my 89 XT-6 and then said "Ok, now that you have "A" vin, I need motor mounts for an 03 legacy with the 3 liter"

I'm laughing too... but for another reason. ...

My company just tested the security of several financial services applications for the finance division of a particular (big) auto conglomerate that the dealers and end users use to service their loans, apply for loans, payoff loans, etc....

Guess what piece of personal, private, information was needed to either initiate an online account or perform password resets? DING! DING! DING!

The only authorization tokens were VIN + Zipcode, or VIN + model or model/year. In some cases it was VIN + lastname

So what could we do with just a VIN?
  • Initiate online access for accoutns that didnt set them up
  • Change the email address on file for existing accounts
  • Reset passwords for existing accounts
  • Change the address and billing information for existing accounts
  • View payment history
  • If the loan was linked to a creditcard, view the credit card transactions
  • If the loan was linked to a creditcard, generate one-time use creditcard numbers and make fradulent online purchases
  • If the loan was linked to a creditcard, initiate balance transfers
  • Add a name to the loan/title
  • Payoff the loan, and with the updated address and new name on the title, basically steal the car

I bet if I did some digging I can find similar authorization flaws in most automakers financial service applications.

So we have a online forum here, where users designate their region, and if the user is old-school enough, they have probably disclosed their real name once or twice....
