batteries generally suck when forced to deal with 15" of fallen snow. So there is that. NO charging ports 50 miles into the woods. Unless you are saying Subaru's marketing is image over substance!!! GASP

Subaru's core buyer is well educated, environmentally aware, and buys cars that are cheaper than they can afford. That has always been the demographic. Now, if you want to include people with tents on their roof and and focus groups that say cladding = rally, then we may have a problem (especially with Solterra's lack of range).

My Teslas have done an excellent job in the snow (I use winter tires as well). Digitally controlling two independent motors is perfect for low traction situations. I don't think many people are driving in 15" of snow on the road, Subaru ground clearance is ~8.7."

I get around 3ft each season. Last year it was abysmal with less than 1.5ft even at our elevation (around 4000). I think Electric cars so far are just a novelty. Mainly for those of us with houses. Apartments are catching up with adding chargers, but its still a lot of money. Some people are lucky their job has a charger or two. If they switched up the design, made the battery smaller and swappable. Roll up, swap batteries, pay for the new one (like gas), roll away while you're previous one sits on a charger to be used by someone else. That'd defeat the driving distance thing immediately. You could stack up on those batteries even for trips. Even if it only took twenty minutes to charge a full battery, I would still hate sitting there waiting (1st world problems). But then... fools might throw those things in the ocean willy nilly like the interent memes say they do. The current way works too, Idk theres too many "Well this," and "Well that" to be had with the convo as a whole.

Nissan and some battery company had a great idea years ago. Pull into a station that looks more like a car wash. Stop. An automated system came under your car and detached the battery and slid it away while another fresh one was brought in and attached to the car. Drive off. Less than 2 minutes.


Just can't get all the manufacturers to get on the same page for that.

Tesla offered this in Cali. No one did it. An Israeli company, BetterPlace, did it for EV taxis, they went bankrupt.

Charging is so quick for trips that this is rather useless.

Obviously there are many variables, but for an anecdote, I drove up to Vermont, about 7 hours (~300 miles) in winter. My Tesla told me to stop twice, for about 10-15 minutes each time and I arrived at the ski house with plenty of remaining charge. Those 10-15 minute Supercharger stops were barely enough time to use the restroom and eat a sandwich. Colder temps would, of course, increase charging time. In a WRX or STI I would probably only stop once for gas/food/restroom, but for about the same amount of time.

The battery swap is quick. Tesla at their unveiling showed a battery swap vs an Audi A8 (A6?) filling up at a gas station. The Tesla swap was faster. But you also had to come back to get your old pack on your return trip. They had one or two locations in CA and they eventually shut it down bc no one did it. If Better Place couldn't do it profitably with EV taxis, then I don't know if it makes sense. Also, you are only worrying about any of this on long trips (300 miles+).

Yeah. It's a great idea. Just not enough people having these types of cars yet to make it work. I didn't realize that Better Place actuallty implemented it. Thought it was just an idea. Also didn't realize charging had gotten fast enough to make long trips not really much longer. That's good. I'm still a ways off for needing/wanting an EV. Mostly for up front costs. I'm getting closer to retirement and can certainly see me getting one and they should be far ahead by then than they are now.
