How fast are you going on the highway? I hate to ask because I think it's obvious and you probably know, but if you're doing 80mph your gas mileage will suffer. I find that my Impreza does pretty well if I get it to 62-67 mph and then set the cruise control. Mine is a 5MT though. The "sweet spots" with the CVT are probably different.

Jack, #1 It does(can) get better. I started with about 32-33mpg averages and now have 35-36mpg with 7500 on the odometer. Doing mostly Minneapolis/St.Paul interstate commuting with traffic and construction.
#2 - Work on slowing that quick zero to 30. The trottle is very sensitive. Keep a very light foot.

Same here - I was frustrated to get 26-29 mpg in my first two months (Ltd PZEV) while I figured out the car, then started seeing improvement after 4000 miles and the first oil change. Now approaching 8k, i am regularly getting 35.5 mpg out of a tank, and I've topped 37 over 450 miles day to day driving when I really tried. "Stiff upper lip", enjoy the Sport.

Averaged 34mpg today over 776 miles, average speed was in the 88mph range for all but 90 miles. Climbing mountains, including going through a pass with max elevation of just shy of 11,000ft. (Average speed 30mph, mostly using 2nd gear)

Oh wait that wasn't my car, but it was my motorcycle :-)

Well that's good to know. I'm still avg 27.3 overall right now which is worst than my outback. I'm normally driving around 60-72 depending on the road. A little city here and there, but very little. Though as I'm down in the south east right now I'm using the AC 100% of the time. I'm afraid to put any cross bars on there now that it might cause even more fuel issues (though I've heard the whispbars from yakima are the best).

Off for my 1st long road trip. Buffalo, NY to Charlotte, NC & back. Should be about 98% highway. Interested in what I'll see. I'm gonna track the whole way down as 1, whole way back as another on my Trip B & use Trip A for the entire trip as well as calculating it on fuelly for the whole trip.

Just picked up my car yesterday. It had 78 miles on it at time of departure and I added 60 miles with an average speed of 45mph (some highway at 80, some dead stopped traffic at 0), with a an average MPG of 31. I traded in from a 2011 Outback Sport (purchased in 2010), and I really like the improvements made to the 2012.

As someone who has owned these two models, what improvements to you like in the 2012? Was there anything that was better in the 2011?

Yes, that's what I've read. I just wanted to know if a former 2011 owner agrees, after having lived with both cars.

My only complaints of the previous generation was the the automatic transmission, which they massively improved, and the seats, which lacked lumbar support, but are now much more comfortable. Overall interior quality is better, sound system is better, slightly more spacious, comes with a rear stabilizer bar, and I like the new styling.

Subaru Stars scooby ftw

I like the new imprezas too. Though much more mainstream in appearance then other generations, the only big complaint I have is the big red wrap-around tail lights. I like everything else about it: color, interior, engine, fuel economy, transmission, fun-to-drive-ness, cheap.

..doesnt mean i wont mod lol

Back on topic: Calculated 40.5 mpg with my last tank (dash said 44 mpg). WOO!

Top safety pick, reputation for reliability, near-midsize interior space in a compact footprint, restrained good looks, best awd mpgs, cvt smoothness, and comfy seats.

My mpg is definitely creeping up after 6000 miles and using a new technique. I can keep the gauge above 30mpg on my daily commute now.

How many miles are on your car again?

I have approx. 4k miles on mine. Just got a personal best 36 mpg calculated on my road trip from Rochester, NY to Washington DC. I thought this was pretty good--A/C most of the way, many hills in PA, and was driving into strong winds for the first 75 miles of the trip.

Understood.

What I always have trouble wrapping my brain around is that you use liters per 100 km, rather than km/liter (which would be more similar to our miles/gallon).

So you guys want to see a smaller number (fewer liters required to travel 100 km), but we want a bigger number (able to travel more miles with each gallon consumed).

if you were both using fuelly it would be as simple as pointing each other to your fuelly pages...my 29mpg lifetime translates to 8.1l/100km right on my fuelly dashboard!

Took off the Aero crossbars yesterday so I'm sure I will be gaining 2+mpg back on the highway. The bars will go back on when I actually am going to mount something on the roof.
