Smile hint for 2.5RS automatic owners

Here's a hint on how to get off the line real quick if you own a 2.5RS automatic.
Keep your left foot on the brake pedal real firm and right before the light turns green, rev your rpm's up between 2 to 3 thousand. As the light turns green let go of the brake pedal and floor it. You'll be gone. I've devoured many oppositions off the line this way. Note though that I have no idea if this is bad for the tranny. Oh, and be safe!!!!!

Not sure if it's bad for the transmission, but I would imagine that it would be bad for the brakes. Cause basically you're transferring power to the wheels with the brakes on. So, it doesn't seem logical that it would be that bad for the transmission.

You didn't mention if you were in Neutral when revving, so I assume you were either in 1st (L?) or Drive.

Sounds pretty cool tho.

Tom

Well let's see... it heats up the trans fluid a bit, but other then that I don't see much damage. It'll put some stress on the brakes, but it won't cause damage because they are purely mechanical and need to be moving to cause wear. BTW, people do this in turbo cars to spool up the turbo before launch... much better launch with an auto then a stick just because of that, I would think.

This is known as "brake torquing" and is a staple of automatic drag racing technique.

Note that it's not really bad on the brakes at all because the wheels aren't turning while the brakes are applied.

It's not really too bad on the transmission either other than warming it up a little. All of the slip is absorbed by the torque convertor. There is a certain RPM that you will achieve even with the throttle floored called the "stall speed". You hear muscle car guys talking about swapping in torque convertors with higher stall speeds to achieve better 1/4 mile times.

Now, one thing that _would_ be bad is to floor it with the car in neutral and then drop it into drive. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT do this to your next rental car. I certainly would never do such a thing.

cheers

I assume you're talking about brake torqueing and not dropping it from N to D with the engine revved, right?

Last night I had my turbo in my car I went to a deserted strip by the airport to do a couple of wot runs so I'll have something to remember it by!

Anyway, just remember to keep your foot planted on the brake all the way down, cause a turbo packs a lot more torque!! First time I did it I didn't have my foot all the way down and the car started creeping...but of course I just gunned it! Boy was that a good feeling!
