Default Please HELP! What's going on?

2012 wrx. Car died on me yesterday, and I could not re-start the car. Brand new battery so I was thinking it was my alternator. Got the car towed home, replaced the alternator and got this noise while trying to jump the car.

Notably I was getting a similar rhythmic noise during my drive to work as well, but only while idling. When the car was cruising the noise went away but the car died on my way home from work.

thanks for the help

Hard to say for sure, but it also sounds like you’re down compression in a cylinder. Could be a rod bearing could be a valve, but whatever it is it does not sound good. Drain the oil and see what you find.

strange though, even if I lost compression on a cylinder, I should still be able to start the car no? I've been on a built motor for 40k miles so i would be very disappointed if there's something going on with a rod or valve.

Spun bearing would drag it down, also maybe a failed tensioner clanking around and jumped timing

Sounds like timing slipped.

If there is a loss of compression it wouldn’t.

Is this when the timing belt skips a tooth? Oh man I really hope it's something as simple as that.

The needing of a new battery and a jump to turn it over makes me suspect, it sounds like it dropped a tensioner if I had to bet

That klunk/klunk is very consistent
Meaning engine internals

Compression test needed

I am pretty sure if engine has zero compression on one cylinder (out of 4) engine will not start

just for kicks I'll update my situation. Turned out the timing belt tensioner mount failed. Literally broke off the short block. So I got a new short block casing (sucks because the one that failed was a closed deck short block), timing got thrown off and the pistons bent a valve. Anyways thousands of dollars later the car lives and is currently doing it's new engine break in miles.

Thanks for the help, and hope this helps someone in the future

Damn, did it sheer off in the block? When my tensioner failed I jumped 180 out on my driver intake cam, 4 new valves later I was back on the road.
