Default 2013 Spt Limited CVT Trade In Value and Good Luck

First off.. just want to wish many on here good luck with your cars. I have complained in great detail of my dispointments with the Impreza CVT and how it has not met my needs. For those who really like it, good luck, I really mean that.

Just wanted to share my experience, anybody who is thinking of trading in your Impreza please do your homework. After looking at my needs and extensive research, I chose a 2014 Mazda 6 IGrand Touring - White with Almond leather. Problem was after working the phones for several days, all dealers (even out of state) were stating to me that it seems many people are trying to get out of 2012 -2013 Impreza's and the most they could give was 18k. My first impressions were, they are just low balling me, but after hearing the same from several dealers I really became concerned.

Thankfully, I just ended up driving past a Mazda dealer just to look at the new 2014 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring - spoke with manager and had my Impreza there, Told them I would Give them $29,200 for the exact car I wanted which they had, and told them I won't take less than $20,500 for my 2013 SWP Sprt Limtd, after some serious neg, they came back and said done. I could not sign the paperwork fast enough! So all who have been saying how the resale of the Impreza is so great, I would seriously rebuttle that.

Either way, I have moved on to a 2014 Mazda 6 IGrand Touring, only had it for 3 days, but all I can say is the transmission is worth the move alone. AVG MPG well above 30mpg so far. The Subaru CVT is a joke IMO - almost dangerous. I feel blessed that they gave me what they did for my trade in. 2013 w/ 13,700 miles, almost exactly 1 year old. So Good Luck with your Subaru's. Based upon all I have read here, many are great people and very passionate about their cars, and that is great!!!

Side note, not to p/off Subaru owners, the 2014 Mazda 6 IGrand Touring is beyond awesome! If your on the fence, you owe it to yourself to go test drive one. Very different cars I know, I was looking for another hatchback. I will miss the AWD, but not really, Went from a 2010 GTI 6spd to Impreza CVT to Now 2014 Mazda 6 IGrand Touring - All I can say is Mazda, for the price, WOW. Seriously, check it out. Good Luck to Most!!! Video of exact car I purchased. Never owned or thought I would buy a Mazda.

Man, the Mazda 6 are pretty sexy to me. That is a definite upgrade, no doubt. Ehh, I'm not sure how much you should really believe into subaru holding their value. I mean they do-ish. Like the WRX and the STi do. But, I firmly believe you got ripped off for trade in. Mine is a 2012 with 32K sport prem and Subaru guarantee a 16,4XX trade in which is also what KBB.com stated. It is unfortunate that you were not satisfied with the service the Impreza gave you. Congrats man. I am not bias with Impreza at all. But since this is the bread-and-butter and an economy car, I didn't expect high class perfection. Although Mazda 6 isn't really a economy car, I would expect a higher level of service from it. Mazda has really got their ***** together in the recent years, having owned some in the past.

Yep, except for the abomination that is the Mazda 5, the entire Mazda line seems pretty awesome right now. I think the CX-9 is a bit big, but that's just me.

Great car! Enjoy it!

Best Wishes with your new Mazda!
I am not thrilled with the CVT in my Impreza either. This is my fifth Subaru and I love the brand and the all wheel drive. However, if Subaru doesn't offer a regular tranny in future models, they may lose another customer as well. A nice eight speed auto would be awesome!

No, the Mazda6 and Mazda3 don't have AWD.

Good choice on the Mazda6. If I was going to change my car, I'd seriously consider the new Mazda3 hatch, especially if they decide to make the manual tranny available with the 2.5L engine (currently you can only get the stick with the 2.0L engine).

Actually, even better would be if they drop the new Skyactive diesel engine into the Mazda3, again with the manual tranny.

As for trade-in value, you will almost always get raped by trading in your car. I replaced my 2010 VW Golf TDI (27 months old with 30k miles) with the Impreza because of the TDI's reliability issues. I was considering either the Impreza or a Focus, and both the Subaru and Ford dealerships offered me $16k for the TDI. I sold the TDI out of my driveway for $22k. So if you want the most for the Impreza, sell it yourself.

8 speed transmissions are for high hp, high torque, expensive cars. I don't know what the hell you're thinking asking for it in $17000 family budget sedan.

If only they'd bring back the MazdaSpeed6. A friend of mine has one, and it's awesome. AWD, turbo, etc.

If they made an AWD MazdaSpeed3, that would also be awesome!

Those Mazdas are hideous and gutless off the line. Interior felt cheap too! Glad you like yours though!

I almost bought a Mazda 3 but decided I wanted AWD.

I have no issues with the CVT, it took some getting used to, but whenever I go back and drive AT cars, I'm reminded that I prefer how the CVT handles.

Have you looked at the newest crop of Mazdas, or are you basing these opinions on previous versions?

Pretty much this. It's a bit laughable that someone would try to use that a criticism against a particular brand when it applies universally. As for all of these '12-13 Imprezas being traded in or sold, not seeing anything beyond the usual here. In fact, it looks like there are more used '12-13 Mazda 3s and 6s than Imprezas locally on Autotrader. Sounds like more sour grapes from the OP. OP, hopefully the Mazda provides you the driving experience and enjoyment that you seek. But with 3 new cars in as many years, could be that you're a little too fickle. Be interesting to hear what you thoughts are about the Mazda after you had some time to get to know it a little better.

Just as a test I checked the resale value of a 2012 Impreza 2.0i Sedan and a 2012 Mazda 6 Sedan. For the MSRP it's just the base price with no options (probably around an extra $1,000 for each to add on the automatic/CVT transmission). For the KBB resale it's the base model with no options except adding on an automatic/CVT transmission, with 12,000 miles. I used 2012 as an example because KBB doesn't have the 2013 listed yet.

MSRP:
Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sedan $17,495
Mazda 6 i Sport 4dr Sedan $20,480

KBB Trade-In:
Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sedan $15,122
Mazda 6 i Sport 4dr Sedan $12,219

Resale Value %:
Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sedan 86%
Mazda 6 i Sport 4dr Sedan 60%

The CVT took some getting used to for me but I like it now. Makes going up some of the hills around here pretty nice. And I wouldn't really want to sacrifice the AWD. The new Mazda 6 is a nice looking car though.

As someone who went from a 2010 VW Golf TDI to a 2012 Impreza Sport Premium, I'm going to go not too far out on a limb and put words in VWGTI's mouth. I'm sure he'll correct me if anything I say here is wrong.

DISCLAIMER: I really like my Impreza, and have no intention of replacing it any time soon.

Going from a GTI with a stick to an Impreza with a CVT is bound to disappoint. The GTI, which is not much different from a TDI in terms of driving dynamics, is a fantastic car to drive. Low-end grunt from a boosted engine, a chassis that's both firm and compliant, communicative steering, and excellent fit and finish. Really, to compare the GTI to an Impreza isn't even fair, as the Impreza is an economy car, while the GTI is dangerously close to an Audi A3.

The Impreza is fast enough, especially with a manual tranny and an understanding of its power curve. But coming from a GTI with a stick, I'm sure the Impreza with CVT feels like it can't get out of its own way. The Impreza has a nice ride, but too much sway in its stock configuration. The Impreza sticks to the road quite nicely, but its steering feels numb when compared to the GTI/TDI. The current generation of Impreza has a greatly improved interior when compared to previous generations, but it's still a good distance away from the GTI's interior quality.

There were things that I missed greatly about my TDI after switching to the Impreza, and I was able to improve most of those things with after-market mods. I wrapped my plastic steering wheel with a leather wrap and replaced my plastic shift knob with a leather one from a WRX, which makes it so I'm touching nicer surfaces while driving. I replaced the original joke of a head unit with a Pioneer double-DIN touch-screen unit with satellite receiver, so I'm no longer missing the infotainment aspects of the TDI. I installed a 19mm RSB from a WRX, so now the Impreza doesn't over-lean in turns. As for some of the other GTI/TDI niceties such as ambient interior lighting, side view mirrors with integrated turn signal lights, an MPG gauge that actually counts in tenths of a MPG rather than 3/10th increments, oh well, I can live without that stuff.

But the GTI/TDI come with that stuff right out of the box. Which makes sense. The GTI/TDI cost approximately $5k to $7k more than the Impreza, so a buyer should get some extra goodies for that money.

So why would anyone (like me and VWGTI) buy an Impreza when they could afford to buy a VW? Because the Impreza is, hands down, WAY more reliable than any VW product. I joke with a friend of mine who owns a GTI that VW has to make their interiors so nice so that the owner is supremely comfortable as he's waiting for the tow truck to arrive. The Impreza also gives you one of the best AWD systems on the road. Oh, you could get a Golf R with a very good AWD system, but now you're looking at a $35k car, and that's just crazy talk.

I dumped my TDI because it was a reliability disaster. VWGTI dumped his GTI because he got tired of shifting in rush hour traffic. I've always thought he should have exchanged his GTI with a stick for a GTI with a DSG tranny, but for whatever reason he chose the Impreza with CVT, which was bound to disappoint. I was able to satisfy myself with my Impreza by throwing approximately $1k in upgrades at it. But VWGTI's displeasure couldn't be cured as simply, mostly because of the CVT.

I think Mazda was a smart choice for VWGTI. I've not driven one, but everything I read about the new Mazda6 and Mazda3 suggests that they're pretty brilliant. So I suspect he'll like the Mazda6's driving dynamics better than the Impreza's (zoom zoom), and he'll likely get more reliability from a Mazda product than a VW product.

So congratulations to VWGTI on the new car. I hope it pleases him as much as I think it will. I saw this move coming as soon as I read his first disgruntled post about the Impreza, because I understand how nicely a VW drives when it's actually able to move under its own power.

I've owned 4 Mazdas, a 626 turbo, Protege, Mazda6, and Mazda3. I love the way they drive, but I won't buy another unless I leave Minnesota.

They are awesome cars except for RUST. Here in MN, all Protege5s are rusting in the rear quarter panels. Not just minor rust, serious paint bubbling, full blown rust. Thought they would've fixed it for the Mazda3, but nope, starting to see those with rust in the same spot. Early Mazda6s too.

I realize all steel vehicles will eventually rust, but the late model Mazdas are doing it earlier than what I see on other makes, including Subaru. A 2006 should NOT have perforation rust. What I observe every day here is confirmed with an internet search for Mazda rust issues.

I most definitely would've waited for the new Mazda3 hatch if it weren't for the rust issue that has affected multiple generations of Mazdas.

Rochester, NY is in the rust belt too, and I don't know that Mazdas around here are rusting any worse than Subarus. I'll try to be more observant and see if I can detect such a trend.

My (hopeful) solution for my Impreza is that I've enrolled in a car wash subscription at the local (reputable) drive-through car wash, which entitles me to one wash/day for a flat monthly fee. This wash includes a powerful under-chassis spray with fresh water. I use this service two or three times/week in the good weather, and more often in the winter.

The underside of my car looks immaculate almost all the time, and I'm hopeful that this will help keep rust in check. I won't know for sure until I see if my Impreza looks better than other Imprezas that are similar in age.

My biggest issue with Mazda (I considered getting one before deciding on the Impreza) was head room. I'm relatively tall, and most of my height is situated above my butt (ie. shorter legs, longer torso). This makes for a peculiar arrangement, because I couldn't find a comfortable seating configuration that was also safe for driving (reaching the steering wheel, accessing the pedals, and fitting my head under the roof should not be mutually exclusive, which it was with all Mazda sedans that I tried). On the other hand, with the Impreza, I have multiple seating configurations that will work with me.

Yes, I'm generally pleased with my Impreza. It has its quirks, but nothing horribly annoying or dangerous for my needs.

Congratulations to the OP for finding a car that he finds better suited to his needs.

^^ That's true. I'm sure the Impreza is more spacious than a Mazda3, especially in the back seat.

My Subaru dealer had both Mazda and Subaru. The head service manager told me they have 10 to 1 mazdas coming in for repair over Subaru. He told me he wouldn't buy a Mazda if he was going to keep it a long time. Side note- he drives a new silverado. I started out liking the Mazda 3 hatch, and the focus whatever it was hatch. I felt like my money was best spent on the Subaru. And yes, complaining about trade in on a newer Subaru, or newer car shows pure lack of knowledge or experience. If you got 20.5K trade in without paying full invoice on the new car, you have zero room to complain. Any new car depreciates a ton when you pull it off of the lot.

Yeah, that just sink in 20500 is amazing trade in money. 18000 would also have been pretty darn good. How much is a new sport limited, 22k something? I think that you can count yourself pretty lucky because not too many brand of cars keeps their value the way Subaru do.

I'm thinking around 22.5K for a limited, maybe 23K max. Think my premium sport was 21K and the limited was $1200-$1500 difference. I'd think 17.5K-18K would be normal good trade. Figure 10-15% loss as soon as you drive off lot with car in your name. Subaru has the highest resale I've seen among new model year cars. Our dealer can't keep nice used ones, as they have a client list requesting notification as soon as one is traded in. I looked at the list our salesman had ( when my niece bought hers, I bought mine out of town)
