2012 owners, how are the stock tires after a year?
'12 and '13 owners, I'm curious, how are the stock tires so far, especially after driving on them for a year or so ('12 owners specifically)?
Living in Seattle I get plenty of rain and occasional snow. Has anyone else with similar conditions had any problems with the tires? Everyone knows the stock tires are rated horribly on tirerack but I'd like some real world opinions from actual Impreza owners here and not the Mazda 3 crowd on tirerack. Do you have any problems with rain/snow/slush performance? I travel over the passes 5-6 times a winter and I'm concerned I might have to swap to new rubber as soon as my car arrives in December. I've read plenty of tire threads on here but the information is scattered throughout the forum. Any insight is appreciated.

i do not like how they perform in the rain. going over puddles on the freeway(55mph-65 mph), i experience excessive hydroplaning for a newish tire. no snow yet, but i plan to switch out to DWS before it comes. i have a set sitting in my garage. but they handel great in the dry. not summer tire great but for all-season great

I have roughly 12k miles on them in 8 months. So far OK. I won't put another set of the same back on, and would go for something a little more all-weather. I haven't used them in snow yet, but I haven't heard good things. Tread wear at this point looks like I'll be keeping them for a long time.

After 15k miles in the "severe conditions" of florida, mine still look and ride like new.
They will likely never see snow, thank god. |

Swapped mine out with DWS prior to accepting delivery.

They were not bad in the snow, I haven't had any hydroplaning, overall they are fine.
I did just get snow tires on rims for this winter, and will replace the OEM tires when they wear out, but am in no rush to do so. |

They're decent enough in dry and wet, and they don't wear too quickly.
I'd never buy the stock tires. There's much better rubber for the money. An extra set of rims and winter tires is a great idea. Then bolt the stockers back on in the spring and use them up. |

Notified them ahead of time as it was a preorder/special order. They ate about half the cost for the DWS and gave me the original tires which I gave to my salesman because he ran over a very large rock and "busted" his rear passenger tire. I had DWS on the 2008 OBS sport that I traded in and I liked them very much in snow/slush/ice/rain conditions. I purchased the 2012 Impreza Sport + a ton of accessories at a bit under invoice - including the tire swap.

general altimax arctic currently sitting in spare bed room. Will pick up car and drive 2miles
to a tire shop and rip them off. The misses impreza will also have the no season switched off for winter. haven't driven car through lots of rain so can't say how reliable they are in heavy rain. |

I just put some DWS on my 2012 wrx. I really like them. I got a lot of hydroplaning on my stock tires in heavy rains and puddles. I put 10k miles on my tires and they still seem in pretty good condition. I just wanted something I could use more all year.

I was very disappointed in the stock yokohama tires. What was Subaru thinking when they chose these? I just put over 16k on them and found they were horrible in anything other than dry weather. I just couldn't pull the plug and purchase new rubber as soon as I got the car. Now that winter is coming, I just replaced them with Nokian WRG2's. These are a true 4 season tire as opposed to an all-season. They run these in Europe where they are serious about tires and it reflects in their laws.

I live in Seattle as well and the tires have been fine. Drove through one foot deep snow last season without issues and have never slid in the rain. Maybe I need to try harder?
Sure, there are better tires out there but mine work great after 11k miles and still have 75-80% tread left. |

I live in Vancouver, BC. The Yokohama AVID S34D are good in dry conditions and decent in the rain. Hydroplaning does occur, had traction control kick in a feel times too when driving in the rain.

I'm only at 5 months/7400 miles on my car, but I thought I'd put in my two cents.
They've been pretty good in the dry, excellent in the wet. I was driving at highway speed through 1-2 inches of water for a couple of miles during the recent Frankenstorm without any issues. I've only had them really slip on me on one occasion. It was on a wet road, and I did it on purpose. Haven't had a chance to try them in the snow yet. |

Tread wear seems to be good and I don't really have any complaints about dry or wet traction. Road noise seems to be a little high, but I haven't driven this car with other tires to compare the noise level. The one thing I would suggest tho, is to get better tires for the winter if you live in an area that gets snow. Had to drive in a snow storm the other night, and it got a little hairy at times. NOT a good snow tire for sure.

I kind of wished they would wear faster so I can buy winter/snow tires and use them on the stock 17" rims, I have a set of 18s which will be my summer tires.

I found that a damp road renders the stock tires very slippery on my car, with massive understeer. They seem fine on dry roads. Haven't tested panic stopping though.

13000 miles here also had them for about 20k on my 09..
snow: if you take it easy you can use these tires in the snow.. compared to blizzaks and DWS and other winter tires they blow especially if they're low on tread rain id give them a 4 out 5 because i have noticed a little bit of hydroplane on the high when raining. dry id give them a 5 out of 5 bottom line, they will work but you can get better tires for snow.. they're a summer tire if your driving through snow i would recommend getting different tires Last edited by Gregor91; 11-10-2012 at 02:45 PM. |

Dunno...
Funny, I've got a little under 12k on my stockers, and this past week was the first time I got to drive it in snow. I had absolutely no problems, and even had a little fun in a few parking lots
I have found the Avids to be adequate in most situations. |

oh yea they're fun in the snow and you can do just fine with them because of the awesome all wheel drive but when i actually but snow tires on my car i could boost up and they wouldn't slip haha I'm just saying there are better tires out there for snow haha

Temperatures have dropped to 0 °C (32 °F) during the night and roads are freezing over, the OEM tires are driving better than I had expected.
