Got out for the first 'real' ride yesterday. Loving it, though a pretty big gearing switch going from triple crank to 2 ring 53/39. Going to have to get a new cassette for the vertical days.

Here is my disaster of a garage. I'm tearing out the workbench, building a shed, and converting the area in front of the MINI to my treadmill, exercise bike, and bicycle storage area. Hopefully I'm down to 4 bikes by then.

Can't decide if you've got an extra deep garage, or just the wide-angle picture and Mini throw off the visual size cues........... I like it though. My garage looks about the same, but with 1 less bike and a double BoB instead of the single!

Love our BOB. The mini is just so short that the garage looks super deep.

What Lance Armstrong, And The USADA, Might Gain From A Confession

by BILL CHAPPELL
January 07, 2013 4:24 PM

The news that disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong might be willing to confess to the doping charges he spent years denying has reopened interest in his case — and in the question of whether his lifetime ban from competitive sports could be eased in exchange for Armstrong's cooperation.

Juliet Macur of The New York Times, whose report on the new possibility Friday cited unnamed sources, says that in her view, Armstrong, 41, would like to trade his cooperation for a reduction in the lifetime ban he received when he ended his fight against the doping charges last August...

Last photos of the SB before I sell it(hopefully soon) Frame was warrantied so new color, looks pretty good. The warranty was because of the old swinglink design BTW. Nothing really wrong, but Yeti replaced it anyway. The MT-8 brakes have been replaced with the stock Elixirs, but otherwise it's how I rode it this year

edit: it's being replaced with a carbon SB since I like it so much

I know its hard to diagnose a noise problem over the internet, but trying to see if you guys can give me more ideas on where else to check for the noise.

For those that don't know, I have a Cannondale Supersix EVO with full Shimano Ultegra gear. I have the Enduro ceramic BB adaptor so my Ultegra crank can fit inside the BB30. Cant really remember when the noise started or what I did/changed but right now its developing a tapping sound around the BB. It sounds as if something is knocking on my carbon frame from the inside. It only happens when I apply pressure on my left leg at one specific pedal position. It doesn't make any noise if I pedal lightly or really hard. It only taps when Im cruising at a constant speed applying normal pressure to the pedal. Changing gears wont do anything. It still taps at one specific pedal position. Pedaling fast or slow will still tap. The only thing that stops it from tapping is the pressure I apply to the pedal. I tried pedaling on either feel but that didn't reproduce the sound. Pedaling on the bench doesn't reproduce the sound.

I took it into a shop I frequent, but not where I bought the bike, and have them look at it. They checked the usual, tightening all bolts and the problem still occurred. They then took apart my BB and my bearing is still good and they cant find anything out of the ordinary. They relubed everything and gave the bike back to me (they weren't tall enough to ride my 58cm frame). That didn't do anything either. The sound is still there.

Kinda stumped right now. Im going to take it back to the shop where I had the bike built and have them look at it. They have a trainer at the shop so hopefully I can reproduce the sound to them. But I cant take it back to them till next weekend. Based on what I described here, anyone know whats wrong or suggest other parts to investigate?

I've seen stuff like this turn out to be pretty minor. We had one guy insist that we go through his entire drivetrain before the mechanic figured out that his seat was rocking a little bit, causing a knocking sound. I know you said around the BB, but it random noises can be pretty misleading. Any chance it's related to the pedal itself? Does it matter if you sit or stand?

Im usually pedaling pretty hard when I stand so no, theres no sound. only when I'm just cruising along pedaling normally

I havent check my entire drive train, but I dont see how that would contribute to the sound since it only happens at the same location in the crank arm. But I will give a once through with everything just to make sure.

A local restoration outfit offered free repaints last week. I entered my blue Surly but with about 130 entries I didn't win.

Yeah I'm not saying you need to necessarily, but it's a tough call to make without seeing/hearing anything myself. If it was in the crank arm/BB, you would think you would be able to recreate it with some kind of pressure on the pedals. If a shop checked it over and they know what they're doing, I'm not sure what to tell you other than check with the shop where you bought it. At least then if something's wrong, they might be able to help you with a warranty or whatever.
Loose cleat in the shoe? Something loose in the pedal? It really does sound like it would be BB related, but I'm assuming the shop ruled that out.

Once I had something like that, and taking off the pedals, lightly regreasing the threads, and reinstalling them fixed it. Another time, it was cleaning and regreasing the seatpost. Then it was either a QR or derailleur hanger.

It takes longer, but making only one change at a time with test rides in between helps to determine all of those annoying noises.

Dolphin what made you ditch your MT-8's if you don't mind me asking? Just picked up a pair for my Ellsworth Truth.

Sounds like he took them off to sell and put the stock ones back on?

That's what I thought, was just hoping it wasn't because of how they perform.

Ya I just wanted to keep them for the next bike. The Magura rep gave them to me to try also, so I would feel bad selling them. They are plenty powerful with the 203/180 rotor set up and manage heat really well. They worked great at Winter Park, and I would imagine they would be sufficient on steeper/more technical mountain as well(but that's what the DH bike is for)

Bed in took forever FWIW though. They didn't start working properly until the middle of the third ride, and that was after I bedded them in like I would any other brake. Once bedded in they work great though, especially considering how absurdly light the system is.

edit: When you bleed them/cut the lines, mind the torque specs. You can strip the bleed port threads at the lever extremely easily, and the rest of the alloy hardware is pretty soft as well.

Thanks for the replies, yeah I know its hard to diagnose over the internet without hearing it in person. I've tried to recreate the noise in a controlled environment but the only time I can produce the sound is when I ride it.

Ill definitely take it back to the shop where I had it built and try to recreate the problem on their roller.

Just sucks I cant get it to them sooner, gotta live with that sound for now which really annoys me.

So trying to execute your advice and lower my stem, I looked up the manual for my bike just to make sure I know how to take stuff off and back on (have very limited experience working on bikes) and the manual states

Quote:
All spacers must be located below the stem and within the maximum stack height as shown. No spacers may be used above the stem
Basically I just left it as is. What gives? The manual is BSing me or I should listen?

Sounds like BS to me. I've often used spacers above the stem until I found a comfortable fit and gotten around to cutting the steerer down. Stack height is stack height, and that dimension doesn't change no matter which way the stem and spacers are oriented.

Probably legal BS becuase some moron didn't bother to cut his fork down any and had 8 inches of spacers on top of his stem, then proceeded to crash and impale his brain on his fork steerer.... stranger things have happened.

but yeah, one or two thin spacers over your stem isn't a big deal... although eventually you should cut the steerer down to the right level once you've gotten used to your fit on the bike.
