OT Computer help - "new" laptop not cooperating
I recently picked up a used laptop from Scoobed - it's a Toshiba Tecra 780CDM, PII-400, 64MB of RAM, Win98, blah blah blah. I've already managed to pick up the WORM_KLEZ.H virus, which I discovered when my email started doing weird things. I got spoiled by having Norton AV on my desktop and didn't even think about this laptop not having virus protection - bummer.
No problem, though, the Navy has a license for all personnel to get a free copy of Norton AV Corporate Edition for use on their home computers. So, I got a copy of Norton AV CE 8.0 from work yesterday and brought it home all ready to install it and clean up the computer. For some reason, though, the software doesn't want to install - it's almost like the install is timing out for some reason (more on that in a minute). The CD-R is fine - I successfully installed the software on my sister's old Win98 desktop without any problems. Here's what happens on the laptop. I run the .exe program (I've tried both straight off the CD-R and by copying to the C: drive) and it goes through all the initial setup stuff. It asks me to agree to the License Agreement, what folder do I want to install to, what type of install (Managed or Unmanaged - I use Unmanaged since this will be a stand-alone computer), etc etc. It then gets to the prompt saying "Click Install if you want to install Norton AV now, or click Back if you want to make changes." I click Install. The next little window pops up, saying "Now installing Norton Anti-Virus Client Server. This may take a few minutes," and the standard install progress/percentage status bar pops up. The first few times I tried the install, that popped up for just a couple seconds (with no progress shown) and then the window disappeared and nothing more happened. A short while ago I tried again and the progress bar actually showed progress for maybe 15 or 20sec, and then it disappeared. (Of course, by Murphy's Law, this happened as I was talking to someone on the Navy INFOSEC help-line, so I told him, "Huh, now it's working fine," hung up, and the window disappeared. DOH! ) Earlier today I picked up an older copy of Norton Utilities 3.0 from my parent's place and figured I'd try installing Norton AV off of that. It went through kind of the same thing - I selected Custom Install in the Install Wizard, and I had just finished de-selecting all the other Norton stuff that I didn't want and was about to hit "Next" when the Install Wizard just disappeared. A couple of times when the Norton AV CE 8.0 quit on me I've tried re-running the program, but after doing all the initial "searching for components" type stuff it pops up a warning that the Install Wizard is already running (or words to that effect). This may be a really dumb question, but is the virus I have smart enough to block the installation of an anti-virus program? If so, what do I do to get around that? If not, what the hell else might be happening that is preventing me from installing Norton AV? This is really frustrating! Thanks, Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan

according to what I have read, no it won't disable the Virus scan from being installed or run.
Go Here to remove Here for info But from your description of what is going on, I'd give a hard look in the direction of this one: Bugbear Similar to the Klez one, but alittle more nasty and with the ability to screw with Virus scans. |

I don't know anything about that virus, but I'd suggest trying to install some other software on it. Install a game to rule out any other problems.
Also, research that bug on the Symantec site. I'm sure others will have more (better) solutions. |

Sirkbac, you are the effin MAN!!! I downloaded that Stinger program and it found 21 infected files (20 with the Klez virus, and one with W32.kern.cav or something like that). It fixed all that stuff, and I then was able to install Norton AV. Woohoo!!
Thanks for the help... Pat |

Welcome to my day. 2 nuked laptops yesterday, 1 dead computer today, 5 phone calls from users of dead computers.....these are the days of NEC help desk. Gotta watch those downloads. I spend so much time on the virus sites I'm surprised it hasn't burned one of them into my screen. Glad I can be of some help.
