Well just idled it for 10 min and no check engine light! I was starting to get upset at the thought of dropping $240 for a oem IACV. The idle smoothed out, and it doesn't stutter as much with small throttle blips, good signs... I should hope.

+1^ but Very nice Build man! I'm digging the green accents in the engine bay...I know its custom but did you find a name for that color? I can't wait to start building my bugeye. Slowly but surely adding parts along the way but I'll have to wait til I get a house to start really wrenchin. Keep us posted because its threads like these that allow us to live vicariously through your wrenching in the hopes that one day we'll be able to one day lol

Tuning day

Really appreciate your support and kind words. I have always hoped to as well one day, and it all started with a "dream board." Post anything and everything on that board and by all means dream big As far as the color, I got the idea from prismaticpowders.com it's called "shocker yellow." It's a translucent top coat but it's applied over a chrome base coat, then cleared with a translucent white. So it's a 3 color process. I did all the work myself using a home made blast cabinet, old convection oven, and a eastwood set up. Well today started off rough, my IAC valve is sticking really bad, so it may need replaced. It has attempted to be cleaned twice already, and when I ported my TB, I was greedy and did more damage than good.(too much air got by the plate) It had a horrible idle issue and was in limp mode. Dom was really generous by slapping on a used one he had as a spare, and got the tune underway. The car is old and tired as he put it... I'm not surprised, it's got 166k currently. My wheel bearing are all pretty much toast, and I need a brake overhaul in a serious way. So I have a laundry list ahead of me no doubt. There goes the thoughts of all whiteline suspension goodies. All in all I'm totally stoked about my tune, my wife said it was like breaking the sound bearer and felt like she has taken off on a roller coaster. Old tired block made 305.8awhp and 276.9awtq at 80 degree temps. Last edited by Board junkie; 07-27-2013 at 08:38 PM. |

Right on, good to know. Last time on my wife's car I took the hubs off and took them into car quest. The guys there take care of me (press the bearings in for free) I shop there at least 2-3 times a week for the last two years.

I want the car to be functional. Be able to go to the mountain and camping. I want it be around 400whp come this time next year with a new EJ257 bottom end. I'd like to get into autocross but I'm running a fmic so there is some lag there. I will definitely be showing the car, but it wont be a show stopper. It's got 10years of paint chips and scratches every where. I want to have a presence and a name but not be a icon. Top Scoob would be a nice goal, but honestly my pockets aren't big enough... Lol |

Pretty decent numbers there. You got me by about 5whp, but I'm up by about 50wtq.
Loving the build man. Any plans for the tranny? |

My motor is really old and tired, and aren't you a 2.5L? I've been needing to talk to you about your swap, do you have a thread on it, or what route did you take? I know you have hybrid axles. I really want to keep the 5 speed for the long ratio, but find myself reaching for a 6th on the highway. The cost of a built 5speed I can have a DCCD box. So I'm hella torn but first things first- Brakes and wheel bearings. Then maybe bottom end, followed by tranny. Really all depends on what goes first. |

Those aren't bad power numbers considering the temp and mileage, but your curves are very linear and smooth so it'll make it feel more powerful and fun to drive cuz you're virtually always in the meat and potatoes . I forget what turbo you're using but i'm using a vf39 with stage 2 supporting mods and a pro tune from PIA and they made 316awhp/276awtq that day but that was almost 40k ago and the conditions were very similar lol I'm sittin at almost 157k now and I think its a little lower now. |

I've seen WRB w/ green and personally I like it.
I was tempted to try a bronze/goldish brown color on black. I've seen it done and looks sick, but my black isn't a true black, it looks blue to begin with. The turbo I'm running is a hybrid "secret weapon" turbo made by PDX. It's a 16g w/ a 18g wheel inside of it. Got it for a good price and almost zero miles. PO had IWG issues with it sticking, I went EWG so no problems there. True about that power curve. I was hella impressed with it. |

I didn't do too much of a write up on what I did, just a quick description on my build thread in the member's car gallery. I originally went with the 6spd, auto driveshaft, and 3.90 R160 from a 2001 Legacy. It was the cheaper route, but the open diff sucked. Ended up building the hybrid axles (Suberdave mod) and swapped the R180 and STi driveshaft. Waaaay better, probably one of the best handling mods I've done to the car. There are a couple things to think about when deciding on whether or not you want to add the extra gear. The gears are waaaaay shorter than the 5spd, it takes awhile to get used to it. At highway speeds you'll probably run 500rpm or so higher too, so your gas mileage will go down as well (I lost about 2-3mpg on average). Lots of gear shifts during city driving too, I kinda miss the long 1st and 2nd gear for stealthy daily driving. Personally for a DD I would want the gear ratios from the Leggy Spec B (I'm still mad my dad sold his). The major upside is the DCCD. I LOVE the DCCD. It completely changed how the car handled around corners, especially once I got the R180. No more understeer. I went with the fully auto DCCDPro, which I also recommend over the basic one. Even in snow, the DCCD comes in handy. Driving up the pass on snow covered roads, if you put it in full lock you can feel the car tighten up and get very stable. Overall I'm loving my 6spd swap, even if I miss the longer gears sometimes. |

Well I bought a built 2.0 long block over the weekend that I just couldn't pass up. I call it "plan b."
Block has eagle rods, arias pistons, king bearings, stock crank. Heads have bc valves, titanium retainers/ single wound springs, and stage 3 cams, fresh oem valve seats/ buckets where needed, and arp studs. I need to find an engine stand to borrow for a months time maybe longer, all the ones I knew of are on loan. Last edited by Board junkie; 09-17-2013 at 11:07 PM. |

well so not only do I have great luck with shady ass car dealers, I seem to get luck of the draw on shady ass car part people on nasioc. I went to assemble this motor after having it for almost a year- just shy of a few months. I decided to pull the cam covers and look at the cam oil grooves. As my fears had thought they were severely marred/grooved along with the cam shaft itself which was claimed to have been "new."
I'm thinking about contacting this guy and letting him know the situation given I'm going to fully tear down this block now- and have a machine shop resurface the mating areas within specs. I'd like him to at-least half it with me, or possibly take him to small claims court considering I handed him $3,000 Cash for this **** build. I had a nasty feeling about this considering he wouldn't let me take it for inspection without paying for it first. Anyone know of a machine shop capable of fixing these cams and heads? I researched prior posts and hope someone from the NWIC can chime in here.-I know devin I'll get a link to your thread here. |
