2002 WRX swap into 2001 RS swap question
I'm done tearing apart a wrecked 2002 WRX and I'll be starting to take apart the RS this week. I'm keeping the RS drivetrain and the wrecked WRX has a new clutch that I'd like to use. I know the WRX has a pull type clutch and the RS has a push type. Anyone know if the pull type setup can be adapted over to the RS trans so I can use the new WRX clutch? It would help me save a few dollars from having to buy a new clutch for the RS trans while doing the swap.
Thanks! David L.

Couldn't he put the WRX clutch disk into his RS flywheel and pressure plate?

Do you think pull style clutches came out with the 02 WRX? If so I'd like to introduce you to the 1991 Legacy Turbo which happens to use the "02 WRX tranny(or newer)" style of clutch. |

While we're at it, anyone have a favorite clutch for such an RS swap? I think the stock exedy wouldn't be enough.

I would still use the WRX tranny. The longer gears are really nice while you're in boost, short gears + boost can get annoying.

I'm using the act clutch kit SB2-HDSS on a 98 RS with an 05 STI swap. The kit has the "performance disc" and the heavy duty pressure plate. The pedal is a little firmer than stock but once adjusted properly its very easy to drive.

Dag,
That clutch is $475. I paid $365 for a spec stage 3 clutch a while back for a different project and thought that was expensive. I'm going to cheap out in the short run and just install the WRX tranny and its rear end. I'll keep the RS stuff for if and when I feel like swapping that over. David |

With fire extinguisher readied, it started on the first turn of the key. Only the airbag light is on since the seats aren't connected. I need to bleed the clutch and fasten on a few things and it should be on the road. Its been just under two weeks since tearing up the RS and I need the car now since my truck decided to mess up.

The car has been doing well over the past few weeks, no real issues other than the clutch is now slipping so now I'm thinking over putting the RS tranny and rear back in and upgrading the clutch and maybe flywheel. Anyone know if an upgraded RS clutch can be used on a WRX flywheel? I hope so b/c I sold the RS engine three weeks ago, if not, then I guess I'll be buying a lighter flywheel as well.
Thanks, David |

Hey a few things you need to know...
The rs tranny isn't really made to take the abuse of a modded turbo engine so you may begin to lose gears and blow the tranny basically. A stock weight flywheel will help save on teh trans some, but don't go with a puck style disk becuase it will be really hard on the trans. Exedy makes some of the most reliable stuff it seems for subie and I love my stage 1 organic I have on my 98 leg. I will be using my stock flywheel and that clutch on my wrx swap in my leg. However I will be using all my legacy parts...keeping thigns with teh trans... I'd suggest just getting an organic clutch and using the rs tranny...they seem to be just as decent at the new wrx trannies becuase they both don't like abuse or get a mfactory set and beat the piss out of it...talk to dylan at ds1 if you have any ?'s relaly nice guy and the person i got all my info from |
