Default spark knock

My 2000 Outback Wagon has been pinging, like ignition timing is off. Does it have a knock sensor? If so, why the pinging? The local subaru deal says they need to do an "induction service" cost $89 before they will check the timing issue. This induction service is not a standard subaru item, but something this dealership is pushing. Has anyone ever heard of this particular service and is it something a non subaru mechanic could handle?

IT does have a knock sensor, but that' is normally reactive, rather than proactive. I was getting lots of det when I was having coil problems. I replaced my plug wires, and cleaned the ends of the coils, and it was all good. ymmv
