wagon8r bugeye 272k miles 301 awhp original engine and trans
Had my car tuned last weekend after putting on the vf24. Now I know that a vf on a bugeye is certainly not new news. But I know that people frown away from tuning these as much after say 150k miles. Not me. I figure it doesn't owe me anything. But no knock, safe afr's and not crazy boost on pump 91, I figure we'll see what she can do! Car: 2002 WRX wagon 5-sp, 272k miles, been at "stage 2" since 230k Tuner: Graham Gaylord (Boosted Performance) Dyno Info: Virtual Dyno Transmission: Stock 5MT Peak HP at RPM: 301@ 5993 Peak Torque at RPM: 282 @ 4794 Baseline hp/tq for a stock on same dyno: 165 hp? Target Boost: 18 psi Target AFR: ~10.5 Fuel: 91 pump Engine/Power Modifications: VF24 turbo, light PnP + ceramic coated hot side sti pinks cleaned by witchhunter Walbro 255 AEM CAI Godspeed turbo inlet hose GTspec EL headers + uppipe(ceramic coated) tial 38mm mvs ewg ebay FMIC Grimmspeed 3-port EBCS NGK iridium plugs HKS 3" downpipe stock '04 sti exhaust gimmick lightweight crank pulley Driveline Modifications: Custom shifter bushings, ACT 13 lb. flywheel freshly replaced OEM replacement Exedy clutch, Stiffer mount mounts and trans mount I forget what kind, I'm thinking they're Subaru p/ns though. Suspension Modifications: none Other Modifications: many random things, none of any significance So anyways, I was happy. I know this is just a virtual dyno, so I'm not taking it as gospel truth, but it gives me a good idea of where the car sits. It's my daily driver, I put on about 18k miles a year (bought it about 3 years ago with 227k) and it's a blast to drive. Certainly not king of the streets, but very surprising. It's a completely stock exterior '02 psm bugeye wagon and the only noticeable things if you know what you're looking for are the EGT and wideband gauges inside, and the hoodscoop delete plate and black FMIC. My goals for the car when I bought it were: 300 whp 12 sec 1/4 mile 30 mpg So far I've gotten 30+ mpg on a few trips, my last time at the track was a 13.38 and 13.40 @103 with a horrible clutch, and the 300 whp thing isn't really set in stone, but it was just a nice round target number. So, I may scrape a 12 this season with launch control and my new coilovers (not yet installed) and we'll just call it good from there. So, as it turns out subarus ARE durable!

Thanks man!
I had done a compression test about a month ago and it was still 125 psi (very cold) across the board, so I figured we'd be good to give it a whirl! I stuck my borescope down the cylinders (it's a tiny camera) and I could still see crosshatch all the way up and down the cylinders too. Very impressed. |

I ran 12.1 at 116mph on my stock 205 at 296whp, so you should be able to get mid low 12's pretty easy. I also went 12.6 at 112mph on the same engine at 244whp. So I'd say you've more than likely met your goals!

Well, we'll see. I don't like to assume anything 'til I see the results. Now that I know my powerband, I have a better idea of where to shift though.
I don't get to the track often. Maybe 8 passes a year. So I'm not a seasoned pro and I don't get a lot of practice, but I think the 12 is there with a good launch. My horrible suspension was not helping me either. SOO much squat under acceleration, lots of wasted energy there. I think the coilovers will definitely help me there. |

Outstanding***8230;..not nearly enough of these stories in my opinion. My bugeye is the best, most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

It's never left me stranded, has gone where many cars wouldn't dare to look, and loves to play! I certainly can't complain.

Yeah, the power is so smooth, I love it!
And I bought it with ~225k on it, so whoever had it before me had taken care of it mechanically very well. I was blessed to find a good one! Now my goals are: 1. 12 sec 1/4 mile 2. 300whp 3. 30mpg 4. 300,000 miles |

You got 30+ mpg? WOW. Even all highway driving, I average 26-27 mpg and my tires filled to 45psi cold.

Quote:
My good mileage was with my sti wheels and 215/45r17 bfg summer tires at 40 psi, too though. I know my stock 16" wheels and winterforce tires couldn't hit 30 mpg, too much drag. I also noticed a +1 mpg increase when I made the hood scoop delete after going FMIC. Drag eats mileage! If I had money to burn I would go through every bearing in the car and have it ceramic treated, and do lots of things to get the mileage up. Maybe my next goal should be 35 mpg! hahah |

The 205's are very reliable if the owner keeps them filled with oil. I've got a rotated 30r on my 05 with 140k. No where near the amount of miles you have but I have seen two other local 205's with over 300k on them. I think one of them burned up a valve but otherwise solid.

There's another in the iowa Subaru club that has a few more miles than mine, I think it's an '03. But I have seen more than a few subies go for more than 300k. Hoping this one will do the same! And I've thought about a burnt valve too, but I guess the best I can do is keep a good tune on it and hope for the best. Stuff wears out, life is hard!
If this engine would go bad, I'd probably just take it out and rebuilt it anyways. |

Nice to see someone else using a VF24. My friend had one on his car for probably 300k miles. I'm not sure if it's still on the car as he sold it a few months ago. But it was the stock block and he was the 2nd owner of the turbo. Pretty impressive combo.
Had another friend running a VF23 for awhile too. There are certainly "better" turbo options out there, but it's simply cool to see people running some old-school setups. |

Yeah, it's a super smooth setup. I love how the power just builds and builds. Not the king of the streets, but definitely a fun car to drive. Great midrange.

Well, cars are meant to be driven! It's a great winter car too.
It bugs me when cars are thought to be "junk" just because they get to 100k miles though. And some ARE junk at 100k, but If they are taken care of, they will give you miles of smiles! |

Thanks for posting....I have 165xxx on mine and it will no longer be my daily driver. I wanted to start tinkering with mine, but was nervous with the mileage. Posts like this make me a bit more comfortable. I've been pretty much stock for those miles and would like to think I take good care of the car.
