Question HP gains from these mods...

OK... being a poor man... I need bang for the buck. Can anyone tell me what are the best mods (before the turbo) in order of: "best bang for the buck"?

Here's what I am thinking...
1) underdrive pulley (5hp)
2) Cat back 2.5 " exhaust (5-10hp)
3) New air intake (God Im scared to do this on my 99) (10hp?)
4) Headers (Are Borla the best ones?! They look so dam heavy with all that tubing, I have my doubts!) (5-10hp??)
5) stupid electric s/c which I think someone probably bought but is too embarassed to admit it... please speak up using a different name like "Honda-riceboy"... I need to know all options... (prbobly 2hp)

So with N/A mods... (without extrude or any engine work) what are we talking... spending $700-$800ish for 25hp-37hp? (uugh )

Did I miss anything?
Any thoughts?

Rich L,
even though your numbers add up it doesn't mean that you now have a "200 plus" Hp Impreza for $800.00!!...but you knew that already, right?!
However, it doesn't mean that the people who sell those products were lying to you either!!

See, your car makes 165 Hp AT 5600 rpm.
With the emphesis on "5600 rpm"!!
If all those mods added the "claimed" HP values AT 5600 rpm, then YES, you would have a 200 plus Hp Impreza...at 5600 rpm. But they DON'T!!

The problem is that each mod effects a different portion of the engine's torque curve, and in different ways!
While one mod may add in a certain rpm range it may take out in others. And when you superimpose all the changes from all the mods throughout the complete rpm range you may only end up with only "modest" OVERALL improvements, and feeling like you did not exactly get your money's worth.

Now imagine, if the "aftermarket" actually "tuned" the parts they sell such that they complemented each other...

However, with that said, your list pretty much covers all the worthwhile mods, except for the "electric super charger".
The "fan" in the unit is known to burst and send the remaining fragments in to the engine. In my opinion the risk is not worth the 4-6% gain!...unless you have a 00'...where the filter would be between the electric S/C and the intake manifold, providing some protection.

Other than that the only real answer is a turbo, but that may open up it's own can of worms.

i agree......i done a diy intake and i gained top end but lost on low....
but i dont care since it made me faster

lets say if you have a exhaust that gave you low end power but took from top....and you got a set of borla headers that took from low and gave you top....does this mean you spent 800 dollars on sound?....you will see no performance gain whatso ever?

what if you concentrated in gaining power in nothing but the top....is it possible to get close to 200 hp after so many rpms?

thanks,
space

Thanks for the info guys... I figured that stupid little electric sc wouldnt work anyway (especially with a new underdrive pully limiting the electric capacity).

Anyone hear about Rallispec's cams yet?
That might be a worthwhile investment.

I'm waiting for Cobb tuning's cams.

I have a 99 RS and am planning on staying N/A.So here is my list:

Intake (currently have Weapon*R but am getting a Cobb Tuning one as soon as they are done)

Unorthodox Crank pulley

Headers (wait for another set like the Syms whenever they come out)

Cat-back Exhaust ( I currently have a Stromung dual-tip w/ mid pipe)

Cams (Cobb tuning's new ones)

Head work (Also to be done by Cobb Tuning)

ECU (I'm debating between the Cobb piggyback ECU or the Haltec whenever Trey gets one to mate up to the EJ25)

That's what I'm doin

Kyle
