Default The remaking of a Legacy

To be more precise, the attempt of remaking a 2009 EDM diesel Legacy (BL) into a LHD JDM Spec B 6MT. The keyword, for the present time, being “attempt” which is another way of saying that the current situation is work in progress - still no certainty in sight.

For various reasons (most being financial, some of them having to do with changing MOT regulations and others being planning and personality related as well as sheer good luck or lack of) the whole process has been as backwards and counterproductive as possible.

Instead of saving and buying a full donor car I kept on piling stuff from JDM land, one intercooler, turbo, intake and exhaust at a time. Consequently, the whole picture consists of the following:

1 x EDM Subaru Legacy diesel (MY 2009), lacking engine assembly and transmission

1 x JDM EJ20X (MY 2003) engine assembly minus alternator, PS pump, A/C compressor but including intake and exhaust manifolds, up-pipe and VF 38 turbo

1 x JDM EJ20X (MY 2007) longblock

1 x JDM spec B turbo 6 MT gearbox and a 3.54 R180 diff (as a matter of fact it’s a R180 carrier with ring and pinion, of hawkeye Impreza STI provenance, and a Torsen R180 unit which will have to be installed within said carrier), and matching spec B 6MT rear axles

1 x VF44 and 1 x TD04 HLA 19T plus 2 x matching TMIC’s

1 x alternator, 1 x PS pump, 1 x A/C compressor, 3 x starters (one being from the diesel, the other two of JDM origin), 1 x full intake manifold (injectors, TGV’s, fuel rails included), 1 x exhaust manifold, 1 x up-pipe, 1 x JDM VAB STI downpipe (flanged to fit the Legacy twin scroll type turbo) and secondary cat, both with less than 5,000 km of use

Plus 1 x JDM spec B 5AT wagon complete (hopefully) wiring harness, 1 x EDM STI downpipe (MY uncertain, has the very restrictive design blanking the wastegate / also needs to be flanged to fit the Legacy twin scroll type turbo), 1 x EDM STI 08+ twin pipe exhaust boxes set (can’t be fitted without modding the rear bumper) and 1 x STI Genome exhaust boxes set, 1 x USDM 2015+ STI steering rack, 2 sets of starting kits (ECU, BIU, immo, keys, steering column lock, door lock), one from a pre-facelift spec B 5MT, one from a facelift spec B 5AT, with mismatched instrument clusters (also 2 pieces, both facelift spec B 6 MT – one has more than 200,000 km on the clock, the other around 80,000 km), various bits and pieces.

The EJ20X engine assembly is complete, ready to be installed(but idling in my living room at the moment ). I know it's the wrong one because the compression ratio is sky high and doesn't take any more boost, but it was too cheap to resist. It's kind of a mesh-up: the longblock, the intake, the exhaust, the turbo, the intercooler, the accessories - all came from different vendors in Japan, I put them together, exchanged all the hoses - oil, water, vacuum, and the gaskets, and, miraculously, everything fits.

The gearbox - the 6MT from the JDM Legacy - it's in the process of being converted to a STI unit, meaning I'm machining a DCCD center diff from a 2015 STI in order to swap the original center diff, and also I'll be exchanging the front, open diff, to a STI helical. To complement it, I'm putting a CLSD R180 in the rear. Hopefully, I can fit a 2008 STI propeller shaft.

To make matters worse, I've decided to swap the wheels to 5x114.3 so now I'm making custom rear wheel hubs. In the front I'm swapping a complete STI set: knuckles, hubs, lower control arms, axles, suspension, sway bar. In the rear I'm making custom mounts in order to mount the 5x114.3 struts and springs. The entire suspension, front and rear, is from a 2015 WRX (stock).

And the most important hurdle, the wiring, is still in a box, also in my living room , waiting to be tackled. I started matching the most important pieces - the ECU, the BIU, the dashboard cluster, the immobilizer, the gas pedal - with the connectors in the wiring and they fit.

And, most likely, since I wasn't able to find an electrician willing and able to do the project I'll have to tackle it myself and cut and soldier and try to bring everything that was on the right side onto the left side and also account for differences between the harness, which is from an AT donor - a wagon, and the configuration of the car - a MT sedan.

Thanks, but I haven't gotten to the "nice" part of this project - so far it has been tiresome, expensive, dirty, uncertain, stressful and so on
I just hope the end result will bring enough satisfaction to justify the process.

Having more pressing issues on my mind (such as tackling the wiring harness mess) hasn't stopped me from experimenting in other areas, such as the suspension department.

I don't know if this has been done before or not, but here's a fully pillow balled Legacy BL/BP suspension (I'm referring to suspension arms).

Another day, another premiere: 5x114.3 rear wheel hubs for Subaru Legacy BL/BP (suitable for STI wheels and axles)

And this is how I'll be mounting the 2015 WRX rear suspension onto the 2009 Legacy chassis:
