I’m sure it makes sense to you now, DD = something else, IE not a performance vehicle. My Ridgeline has SH-AWD, but that moniker is only used on the Acura offerings cuz “marketing” and “the message”. Same AWD system. And it works exactly like the Twinster except it doesn’t have a rear/drift 30:70 mode. But the rear half shafts electronically/mechanically torque vector on it (not bs brake based) and you can tell in a corner as it pushes power to the outside wheel Love the thing. Great AWD system.

But my point is the TourX is likely a better DD for you than a GR86, CTR, GRC, etc. A TourX daily with a GR86 weekend/fun combo sounds like the move. Daily driving around here is boring AF. Light to light, stop and go. Even the highways, there are so many cars you cannot get into the fast lane and go warp mode. Always a camper. I’ve learned over years, get a proper daily and a proper fun/performance vehicle. Trying to combine everything into one vehicle, you lose. And when you have a daily, the fun car will last you 3X, 4X, or more time because you aren’t racking the useless mundane miles up on the ODO idling, sitting in traffic, etc.

I’ve learned over years to get one car that does it all, all year long.

why spend your daily commute in a boring people mover? why save mileage on the "fun car" for the next owner?

i'd also rather not insure, register, maintain, fix, and clean two cars when i can just do one. a set of snow tires/wheels takes up less space than another vehicle, too. there's always the wife's SUV for dumb stuff or short trips.

I certainly dont commute in a boring car. In fact, i daily look for reasons or chores to go drive something that makes me grin from ear to ear when i slightly step on it.

yeah, but you could get a new WRX, never look at it from the outside, and after you put on a lot of parts and a tune, it'll be a fun car that does it all, all year long.

Operative words bolded for emphasis. Cant look at it and drive it at same time.

GRC and other fanbois usually tell me what it looked like from outside and how they would be faster if [insert reason or condition].

Different strokes and way different philosophies. Daily commute? Fun? Sorry man those don’t do well together for me. Not living in a major metro. It’s not fun in a fast or performance vehicle, it wouldn’t be fun in a Cayman GT4, a Ferrari, nothing. It’s boring AF mundane driving. Light to light and densely packed freeways. Hell the only turns are highway overpasses, fun times
So a cheap EV, Prius, Honda Fit, regular Rolla hatch, Civic, etc, is the perfect vehicle for this. Same goes for my bikes. Ooh so much fun, put the suit on, warm up the bike, put the rest of my gear on and sit there idling at lights. I’d rather sit and watch paint dry.

I save the mileage on my fun car for me, not the next buyer! If do the buy/sell/trade thing, cool, it’s your money. I don’t do that. My daily is at 10 years 9 months. I’d rock it for another 3 or so years but they quit making it after MY24, and I have a move scheduled in the next few years where I’ll need more range than I have now (rural mountain location) so I will finally replace at year 11 this coming Feb/March, with a newer one with triple the range. The benefit of a DD is my fun stuff lasts long term. My bikes are over 10 years old and going strong AF. They are mint, modded, long since paid off, and you know what? Insurance gets WAY less expensive once the vehicle is 5+ years old. It gets downright cheap. My fun performance car, will last the next 20 years, or maybe until death. I buy my chit to keep it, not to trade it in 3 years. Not trading chit in is why I have 7 vehicles, all for different functions. I quit that buy/sell/trade bs a long long time ago in a galaxy far away. For my money that bs was a fools errand.

Insurance on 2 vehicles isn’t that much more than one when you are a grownup, with good credit, especially if you add in howeowner. Registration here is $70 a year. And what are we fixing? I’m not driving some 1970’s relic as a DD and having to fix the water pump or timing belt every month. What maintenance? My daily requires almost zero maintenance. In cabin air filter that I swap every couple of years, takes all of 3 minutes to pull the glove box cover, press the tab to open, slide out, put new one, done. A new 12v battery every 36-48 months. Likewise that takes all of 5 minutes if I’m going slow. Tire rotation, 5k miles, meh. One day every year to 18 months at Discount Tire, and I get them rebalanced while I’m at it. Fun car, which is gas, doesn’t get high mileage put on it so I can go a full year or more and not have to do any maintenance. I use Amsoil for fluids and get labs done on all the fluids so this 6 months, 12 months stuff is bs. Fluids break down with use, not time.

What’s left that you said, cleaning? Oh my. I use PPF and ceramic coat my stuff so cleaning is so fast it’s ridiculous. My truck takes some time because it’s larger than say a compact car, but both my hatches are so quick to wash. Hose down, 2 buckets, break out the leaf blower to dry. Minimal microfiber use then spray on some P&S bead maker and wipe off. Done in under an hour flat. And with PPF/Ceramic I don’t have to clean them often. I’m not worried about Cars and Festerment and trying to impress other dudes.

One car to do it all, well it’s going to suck at something. It’s gonna suck for hauling things, or suck for MPG/range. On the performance side you likely could have gotten something better for attacking corners than what you actually bought because you had DD on your mind. One car is always going to be a compromised solution. That’s like trying to buy one single tool for your toolbox to do it all, and it’s fairy dust, doesn’t exist.

Then there is the dd. I don’t care if I made a mil a year, I wouldn’t drive something fast, luxurious or anything else for a dd, because it would draw attention. I like doing the opposite, being completely under the radar. DD also sits out in the sun and gets baked here, especially in our summers which hit 102-106. Then all the parking it has to do, risks of door dings, scratches, etc. I wouldn’t want my nice fun car going through that madness with the level of idiocy on the roads here. Everyone phone surfing while driving. My DD gets scratched, hit, totaled, big f’in meh. My nice stuff, I’d be all
And mathematically, financially, 2 vehicles providing I use and keep my DD long term, is cheaper than one vehicle that gets miles racked up on it, and sold or traded for something new every 3, 4, or 5 years. Then there is the fact that I don’t think 6MT affordable performance variants will be made much longer. Hybrids with slush boxes will become the norm soon enough. My 6MT’s will be mint and available for use for decades to come. YMMV. I’m not dailying anything I really care about nor anything expensive either. People see my DD and look away, look down on me. I run radar in all vehicles but I’ve been caught slipping in the DD speeding past a cop and they don’t even bother, so it’s perfect

i suppose i could just shield my eyes every time i walk in the garage, but i would have to look at it when i'm fixing all the broken things

thank you Capt. Obvious for taking that as literal as possible ... how about one car that does most things well (for me) ... there is clearly no car that does everything.

for me, the Stinger works ... AWD, relatively fast, Brembos, giant hatch for cargo, looks good (IMHO), good amenities (AA, heated and ventilated seats , etc), adequate mpg, can fit 4-5 people.

these are my specs ... obviously, if you live on a farm, are a contractor, tow giant trailers, have 7 kids, or regularly travel up the sides of a mountain, you'd have different requirements.

i can use the wife's SUV for hauling larger items. if its larger than it can handle, i'll rent the Home Depot truck or a U-Haul for $19.99. i've done that once in the past 5 years, so hauling large items isn't a major requirement.

Stinger is a looker and a beast with an ethanol ek1 tune.

Subaru rule of thumb is less you mod less the chances it will break. 75% of mods out there do not improve your cars function or performance but come with nice stickers.

LOL who the hell buys a tarted up Corolla for a weekend car ? Cars like the GRC, WRX, etc are nothing more than fun, practical daily drivers. That's the entire point of their existence. If I am getting a weekend car, it is going to be a dedicated RWD chassis, not some tarted up econobox . You are doing it wrong

Different strokes etc. but also people change. This was me up until recently. It comes down to how much fun is enough for a daily. I found my acceptable threshold is a lot lower than I would have figured a few years ago.

It's a fool's errand to get one car that truly does it all while not being crazy expensive. All of the hot hatches and economy sports sedans are compromised in one way or another. You have to step up quite a bit to get to the luxury sportswagons or fastbacks that actually do it all well- AWD, reasonably fast, spacey, nice interiors, etc.

I actually agree with Straight6 for once. Go with a dedicated RWD sports platform for a weekend driver and get whatever for a daily, according to your individual needs.

it depends on where you are in life.

no kids, easy 2020 interest rates on a mortgage, absolutely, go get that RWD fun car, and maybe get a SxS to go have some fun at the mud pit, but then you need a tow vehicle as well as storage.

kids make having the time to enjoy a 2 door RWD weekend car not easy, and affordability gets in there too. it's far more enriching for my family to spend 10k a year on a family vacation where my kids can explore and learn about new things they'd never have access to vs a me getaway car for the weekends I don't have to myself anyway.

I can absolutely justify spending ~$15k more for a GR Corolla over a fully loaded Corolla HB, I have fun, and my daughters giggle when I give it some extra oomf in a corner.

it's not a fool's errand to get a single vehicle that provides a level of joy that isn't the pinnacle, you gotta do what is right for you, and your situation in life.

I should rephrase then- for me, it seems impossible to get a "do it all" vehicle within my budget that I really enjoy. I have some of the same concerns you do, with regards to kids and affordability and priorities. But I think I'm at the point where I'd rather get something on a RWD platform for weekends, even if it was something used and cheaper, than to try and make my daily driver fit everything.

The GR Corolla definitely seems to me to be the most appealing of all of the compromised options. I'm never going to track it, so the rear diff overheating probably won't ever affect me, and the biggest cons (interior space and quality) I can live with. The VB WRX is just too far from the pinnacle, even for the price, boring crossover engine with its low redline being the biggest issue, and the brakes... just, I'm going into buying a GRC knowing that it's getting paired with a weekend toy in a couple of years, once all but one of our kids are away at college.

Yup, different strokes my man. Riding and driving, are my passions in life, land and the water, and soon off-road via powersports equipment when I can move to my land in the mountains. Living in a major metro, with millions flooding in here, traffic is 24/7. DD something fast, luxurious, etc, is a waste of time and money. No turns, idling, lights, stacked highways, meh. Towing, well I tow once weekly half the year. Add in a couple of bike trackdays even more so it’s a necessary evil. Helps immensely having a bed as well for all the landscaping bs I have to put myself through yearly. I wanted to consolidate the EV DD and my truck into an EV truck but once those all came out and I saw the ridiculous MSRP’s, I said f all that. My truck should last me until I’m dead or so elderly it won’t matter. Same for my performance car bought last year. These MSRP’s have become absolutely insane so for my needs a DD upgrade and I’m out this car market for 10+ years. All my vehicles will last decades because all my eggs aren’t in one basket.

Everyone’s chit will be different and it will also change over time, age, etc. I see the writing on the wall as far as cost and have made the vehicle choices based on this. They stop making this or that, I’ve already copped the bag. We had people flooding in here before C19, but during and after, it’s 10X worse so I had to pivot, buy rural land, and now have to come up with the $ for construction, etc. Nobody could have predicted that, here. My twisties here are 60% ruined due to construction, subdivisions going in, etc. And it’s way out in the sticks. But if I want to keep riding and driving twisty roads, I have to flee my native state. So be it. But even staying here, I’d still have a DD and a fun car, both.

Crazy statement considering the Wrx is slower than the GRC and CTR in every measurable category recorded by every single media outlet , journalist, and small time YouTuber. Keep smoking that crack

i actually got into Subarus back in the day because i was tired of the fun RWD car and winter beater situation.

had a Porsche 928 (my dream car since HS) that needed winterized and sat in the garage 4 months out of the year (only had a one car garage at the time). winter beater got parked in the driveway and the elements. snow needed to cleaned off the beater in winter for work while the 928 sat all warm in the garage doing nothing. enter the SVX ... sold both and only had to deal with one.

my situation has changed, and i probably could get a fun RWD car now. I plan on keeping current car for another 6 years at least, and by then there probably won't be any "cars" to choose from ... only SUV's

I can see coming back around to this in a few years for many of the same reasons, if not just straight up losing interest.

Truism #1: "Buy the car that matches the kind of driving you actually do, not the kind of driving you want others to think you do"

Truism #2: Debating which car is better is meaningless since everybody has their own meterics which are uniquely weighted to every individual, ergo, 'better' is a qualitative and subjective statement.

Trusim #3: Test drive as many cars as you can, and find the one that makes you smile, regardless of what every illegitimate expert, or narcissistic influencer tells you.

Truism #4: You should never ever cheap out on tires, they are the most imprtant part on your car.

Truism #5: As you get older you tend to buy cars that make your life easier, even if that runs completely counter to what your younger self desired.

Feel free to use these as you see fit, but they have stood the test of time. Their are many others, but I will give you time to absorb this first. Too much genius shared can be overwhelming for the uninitiated.

I shall now bless you with my unparalleled words of automotive truisms. May you bask in comfort and warmth.

Too much genius shared can be overwhelming for the uninitiated.

in recent news, self proclaimed genius uses the wrong homonym.

Nice, and what I have said for many, many years, but it will fall on deaf ears

Cant disagree with any of those. I disagreed that only blind people think WRX looks good as its not congruent with your truism #2, or general common sense. Ppl like the Elantra and to me it looks like a universal TV remote.

LOLOL

Yeah, if you think I, as an engineer, took the time to grammatically check my writing for an auto enthusiast board, you are gravely mistaken! A comma splice or two never stopped a shuttle launch

My creativity cannot be bound by mere English and as soon as I look up what a homonym is again, I will have word(s) with you sir!!!!!

PS.. Do not tell anybody, but I also had bad subject verb agreement in the first sentence but I will not go back and correct that. True beauty has imperfections

Ah, but elantra holds true to truism 1 and probably truism 5.

See the more you think about it, the more genius these become
