Default 2008 STi with Cobb APv2 Stage1. *stock tune sucks*

Went over to PTuning today finally.
A lot of people are running stage 1 without even knowing what it's done to their 08, not me. Got boost log up as well.
Car is stock, besides stage 1 93 octane Flash.
The stock numbers seem to be in-line with what AMR got on their DD.
All in all gained 40whp and almost 60 lbs torque to the wheels. Very happy with the car.

Dyno: Dyno Dynamics
Tuner: COBB
Wheel HP: 240 (approx 260 dynojet)
Wheel TQ: 260 (approx 280 dynojet)
Ambient Temp: 75 degrees F

Baseline

Cobb Stage 1 93 oct

How different is it to drive now? I gotta think it feels quite a bit sweeter.

It's not any particularly worse then the 07s were. Remember DD's read a lot lower then dynojets. Also the "recall" was kind of ballooned a bit, only a handful of people ever got their car with the affected VINs, and those people reporting in with the affected VINs dont seem to have the knock.

Yeah, it wasn't exactly a recall either, just a precautionary measure. I'm one of those in the affected VIN range (which was narrowed down according to my dealership) and my car is running great...other than a really weird random start motor issue.

Edit:

Man, look how f'ed up that boost curve is in stock form.

I'm not really into drag racing but I've very tempted to hit the track with the Cobb stage 1 93 octane map to see how it is running. It seems exceptionally strong from 0-100km/h and "OK" (compared to my old protune stage 2) from 100 to 160km/h.

My best run in my old car, in stock form, was a crappy 13.6 @ 101 but I was pretty gentle with my shifting, especially on the 4-5 shift. Judging by the feel of the new car, I'm going to say I could probably run low-ish 13s @ 103-104. I like the fact that the speedometer is much more accurate than the old model's. At 100km/h my actual speed was more like 95km/h. In the new car, it seems to be almost dead on.

Very nice improvement over stock. I know how you feel my first 2 stock 07 engines sucked until I went stage 2 and then Protune.

That does look like a great improvement. I wonder why peak boost doesn't hit until 4k RPM on the cobb map though. I believe the previous year stage 1 maps hit peak boost significantly earlier. Could it be that the dyno wasn't loading the engine enough? What gear was the dyno done in?

Thanks

you are using the off-the-self map right??? If so, that is a great improvement with a standard map!!!

I would like to know as well. I thought the AVCS on the exhaust side was to improve spool-up?

I just compared graphs with AMR's, seems like their Max Torque reached point (which pretty much follows the boost spike/spool on these cars) comes on approx 150 RPM's earlier than mine, I would attribute to theirs being a custom flash and more time spent on AVCS tuning..
Another tuner, Miguel of AutoPlaza (who i think has the highest dynojet #s on pump 93 right now for 08 Stock turbo w/bolt ons -329whp/432wtorque) has a target boost
of 23 psi and does not reach that until approx 4150 rpm.
I'm not sure what all this means, due to not knowing what gears, or ramp time AMR and AutoPlaza runs.
After putting on the turboXS 4" downpipe and intake, i will redyno..also I will redyno at a DynoJet Facility to compare.

edit :

This is Turninconcepts car with just 4"downpipe and custom P&L (Jorge? they said) tune
I think their tuner spent a lot more time messing with the AVCS, they hit their peak torque at 3300rpm, almost 400rpm earlier then this OTS stage 1 map.

alright, I just got back.

My first impressions:

I'm running CA 91 Cobb OTS maps. We only get crappy 90 Oct here, so that's the best I can do until I add some Torco. I may play around with that next week. It's definitely an improvement over response and the butt dyno. A little less turbo lag, but man, 2nd gear comes quick. I guess I wasn't fast enough shifting to 2nd because it just bogs bogs bogs!! I used the AP to see (though I wouldn't really say it's accurate, but gives me an idea) and did 3 0-60 runs. First one was so so. I slipped the clutch a little too much launching the car and ran 2.59 60' and 5.7s (this is all from memory, I didn't write the exact #'s down). Run #2 was the best and I ran 2.26 60' and 5.29s (again, can't remember the exact #'s so these aren't set in stone). My last run was crap because I hit the rev limiter in 2nd and well, just didn't even bother to look. There were just too many cops out tonight and I didn't want to chance it.

In comparison to my 05 LGT 5eat with STI swap, I'd say the car is close to the power, but not quite there. However, my LGT had some crazy tuning done by Jarrad from PDX running 90 + Torco fuel mixture (not including my race maps). In comparison to the race maps, my LGT would smoke the STI. Again, I'm only running 91 CA OTS maps, so if I run 93 maps with a 90 + Torco fuel mix, I'm guessing the power would be almost identical to my normal street tune on the LGT, but not quite to par with my race map.

I ordered the AMR intake and Jarrad from PDX will be here next week so I'm sure after that, it will be a completely different story. Or so I hope.

oh, and my disclaimer: I am not the world's greatest MT driver by any means... not yet.. still learning how to mad shift without killing my clutch. with a real tune and some more seat time/driver skills, I'm sure the STI will be kick ass. Stg 2 will be later this year.

alright, update to my post from last night.

I reflashed the 93 Oct Stg 1 map to the car and added a little Torco to get approx 93. WOW. definitely miles of improvement over the CA 91 maps. I didn't do any 0-60 runs, but just getting onto the on ramp tonight in "I" mode was leaps and bounds better. I drove the car home in "S" and had plenty of pep for getting her home without sacrificing too much on fuel economy. I seem to be avg about 21 mpg, even with my occassional 0-60 runs and spirited drives.

Heh...

You guys should see what we just managed to do with our prototype turbo back and new HighFLO intake.

One thing is certain, you ABSOLUTELY NEED a fuel pump if you are going to REALLY use both AVCS systems like they should be. We were holding a straight line at a hair over 300 WHP as early as 5000 RPM and pulling like someone drew a straight line to the right.

But, you'll have to check out PPB on that one Probably Monday night.
