dual avcs to single conversion cam/pulley timing
Ive looked at a lot of the other avcs conversion threads. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on it, for the most part. I Tig welded the holes on the camshafts, and put my forester non-avcs exhaust pulleys on the motor. I used the solid bolts from the forester with gray rtv on the threads to keep oil in. (w25 heads)
So here is my concern, The avcs gears and the forester gears dowels and timing marks all line up perfectly. So in theory, if the avcs gears were locked in their resting places, the forester gears keep the same timing. However I don't know what the avcs gears do when they are running. I saw a thread where a guy had to move the solid gears 2 teeth to get them within a few degrees of the factory cam timing. Is the avcs resting at one end of its travel? or floating somewhere in between? I know this sounds complicated, but I hope there is someone out there with some more experience with this. (putting a 2016 ej257 in a 2004 forester xt with forester wiring and ecu)

found this - https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=1411812
edit: just realized I wasn't thinking, those timing values are based on crank timing and I compare to cam degrees - doh. So anyway still 23* difference ATDC, at the cam thats 11.5* and 2 teeth would overshoot a little and bring you 15*. Last edited by drewdogg; 06-17-2018 at 09:51 AM. Reason: imadummy |

Thank you, Im trying to read as much as possible about it, this helps. I talked to BadNoodle about it, he did a davcs to single avcs a few years ago. But he actually has a dyno graph of the exhaust pulleys 1 tooth retarded vs 2 teeth retarded. huge gain by only doing 1 tooth. So that's where I have mine set as of now.
I just picked up my forester heads today(dropped them off literally right before I found the sti motor) Going to take a look at the cams vs the sti cams. If they look like they line up right, im going to proceed! |

heres just an update of my progress. I'm waiting on an fp blue, sooo stoked to get this thing on the road.
this is my ground strap, because I didn't want to crack anything apart as such a low mile motor. grounding to the block would probably result in a nasty arc through the cam bearing you can see the old exhaust avcs gears on bottom left tgvs for the hell of it Last edited by samhangus; 06-22-2018 at 06:48 AM. |

I stuck a cut off bolt in the cam to keep shavings out from grinding the welds off. also installed correct seals before grinding, and after welding to prevent them from melting. so ive been a welder for the last 10 years, this eastwood machine is legit. for now. the non transformer tig units tend to not stand the test of time. Bump from the dead - did it work out as planned? Trying to figure out the ideal settings for AVCS exhaust cams in a fixed position.
